Update: Here is further reflection from Todd Chanko of Jupiter Media on the barebones announcement on the Google/AOL deal. The hidden move here is the Instant Messenger play. Looks like Google may get more than just content from AOL but also some Internet technology. The updated Podcast is here….
Dave Alpert of PodTech News spoke with Jupiter Media analyst Todd Chanko, who says Google is inexperienced with intellectual property and has already offended — twice in one year — major IP constituencies.” Recall the flap over rights regarding content on Google Video Search and Google Print. AOL is owned by one of the world’s biggest content providers in print, television, music and film and that could be very good for the company that intends to do no evil.
SAN FRANCISCO December 20, 2005 (PodTech News) - Google says it will buy 5 percent of Time Warner unit America Online for US$1 billion. The expansion of the partnership between the companies calls for increased advertising on the AOL network using Google’s paid search technologies. In addition, Google would have access to AOL’s digital media to make available to its users.
At its core, the companies appear to compliment each other in two key areas: content, which AOL has and advertising technology, which Google possesses. AOL also has one of the leading instant messenger products, AIM. The deal calls for interoperability between Google TALK and AIM users based on certain conditions, which the companies did not elaborate on.
The firms say Google will become the only shareholder in AOL other than Time Warner. Story all over the net and on tech.memeorandum.
