MENLO PARK, August 28, 2006 (PodTech News) — Google announced last night it’s inviting beta-testers to try out its package of Web-based productivity apps, “Google Apps for Your Domain.” The suite, which is not yet complete, includes Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar and Google Page Creator. Some say Google again has Microsoft in its sights. But there’s one small business that won’t be taking Google up on its offer. GigaOm.com Founder and CEO Om Malik advises caution to other small business owners who might want to take the package out for a test-drive. Catherine Girardeau called Malik to find out why.
REPORTER’S NOTES: For more, read Om’s post, and the related discussion. PodTech’s Robert Scoble also has a rich thread for more background. If you’re interested in beta-testing, you may want to read the privacy policy for Google Apps For Your Domain and decide for yourself if you want to sign up. On the flip-side of the privacy concerns, these new offerings could potentially be very useful for the little guy, especially considering that there’s not a lot else out there in this area — yet.
