The 100 mpg Engine is Coming

LOS ANGELES, November 13, 2006, (PodTech News)–It’s no myth, the 100 mpg car exists — the rub is, they’re built in your neighbor’s garage, not a giant production plant. One company at the forefront of the technology is the California Cars Initiative, CalCars, a group of entrepreneurs, environmentalists, engineers and other citizens working to spur adoption of efficient, non-polluting automotive technologies. The organization has equipped Priuses or similar hybrids with extra batteries so that they rarely use their gasoline engines at all. Known as plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (aka PHEVs, or grid-connected hybrids) they get plugged into a wall socket at day’s end. PodTech’s Matt Kelly spoke with CalCars Director of Communications John Davi about the company and its mission to encourage auto makers to produce 100+MPG high-performance, clean hybrid cars.

Reporter’s Notes: The momentum for a PHEV is building-just last week GM announced it is likely to unveil a prototype plug-in hybrid at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as part of its company-wide focus on “electrifying” the car. GM chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner will deliver a speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show about the company’s emphasis on advanced technologies. Stay tuned!
