[...] August 3, 2007 The increasing use of social media in political campaigning in Europe became especially visible in France’s last elections in Royal vs. Sarkozy, but in the US they really have it down to a fine art. Right now in the US, it’s the race for the 2008 presidential elections and everyone is using social technology, such as YouTube, as part of their campaigns. The internet has created a platform for ‘openess’, enabling people to ‘get to know’ candidates before voting for them, exemplified by the Senator John Edwards’ pod cast run on Pod Tech.
[...] Robert Scoble of Podtech.net interviewed John Edwards on his reason for running for President and what role social media would play in the election and Edwards had this to say in a video: “… I have developed this belief that whatever change the country… unless the people of America decide in turn that they want change, I think if you try to do it from the top down - it doesn’t work. And the way to do it from the ground up, not just in a political campaign but to bring about real, lasting change, is through youth, through technology, through pods, through streaming video (of) townhall meetings, through answering questions from people all over the country, and engaging them because that’s the way democracy is really supposed to work…” The 2004 US Presidential campaign was the first campaign where the Internet played a significant role in the outcome of the election.
John Edwards knows a lot about poverty, after all, he’s helped throw a lot of people into it with:

- his co-sponsorship of H-1b visas,

- his support for illegal aliens,

- his vote for MFN-China

but what about stuff like iraq war and the patriot act?

well, he voted for them too

About the only thing you can say for Edwards is, he spent so much time running for president that he didnt have time to do more damage as senator

You’ve got to ask yourself - ‘what did he do, with the power he had, when he had it?

You want to talk about a candidate for the technologist?

John Edwards has introduced legislation to fight spyware and initiated a petition for Open Internet while out of office.

I dont know of any other candidate with such a solid record on technology.

Wow. It'll be absolutely amazing if our next president maintains a personal blog -- the fact that Edwards is giving insight into his personal side is a major win for him.

Thanks for posting this. I've just recently begun reading RSS feeds and keeping up with your blog. I was impressed to read what you've said about your time with Edwards and your take on it.

I'm pretty jaded on the whole politics thing, but I hope Edwards keeps on including normal folks in his campaign.

Good questions too - refreshingly different from the talking points nonsense on TV.

Glad you finally got the interview, even though technology was against you!

9 minutes... well that's at least twice as long as Matt Lauer. :-)
