IBM’s Blue Gene L supercomputer doesn’t represent a mere small step but a giant leap in computing power.
Today we take a field trip to Lawrence Livermore National Labs where IBM’s Blue Gene L was unveiled about two weeks ago. The supercomputer had been under construction for about a year. But Blue Gene is so fast that even in the early stages of installation it was the world’s fastest machine. It has performed at 280 teraflops and is expected to hit 360. Supercomputer rankings released this week from Top 500.org show that IBM took the top three spots on the list. In second was another Blue Gene computer operating in New York. In third was the ASCI Purple Cluster, which runs in a next-door facility to the top machine at Lawrence Livermore.
