Safer Roads with Photo Technology

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that each year, 800 deaths occur due to crashes caused by drivers running a red light. About half of those victims are merely innocent passengers, pedestrians or other drivers hit by the violator. Those are the fatalities. An additional 165,000 people are estimated to be injured in similar incidents each year. Some cities and towns are finding that one way to bring these numbers down involves photo technology, which helps to deter violators and thus prevent collisions. Currently, more than 200 U.S. communities are employing red light cameras for photo enforcement of traffic signals to reduce violations and save lives. You may have seen one near your own home. In this podcast, Richard Retting, lead researcher on a recent study published by the Insitute, discusses his findings regarding camera use in one Philadelphia neighborhood and the implications for other U.S. cities.
