Stephen Frears may not be entirely comfortable as an Oscar nominee. Lucy Gray remembers a conversation with him — back in 1985 — when he was focused on keeping his production costs down and his financial expectations about the same. Since then, things have changed a little, but a recent check-in with the director of such films as Dangerous Liaisons and The Grifters (as well as this year’s Oscar-nominated The Queen) gave Lucy the impression that nice-guy Frears isn’t all that motivated by the award.

Hi Lucy.
This is fantastic — the techie things you must’ve learned.
We have a new computer, with a program so new even Bill Gates probably doesn’t know how to work it. I’ve been teaching myself the language of graphics. No sound or movement yet of course. Anyway, my own troubles have increased my admiration for you.
Confession: I’ve seen but not heard this chapter. We don’t have the audio installed yet. Since Phil is off on a business trip, it’ll be a few days before I can hear this — but I can’t wait. ALL of the chapters you’ve sent look fantastic.
Let’s try to find a time to get together and talk tech!

You rock, Lucy! Great segment and a timely reminder about the importance of setting expectations at a level commensurate with one’s ability to meet or exceed. Thank you for sharing your insight on this amazing director.
