There are four major IT integration models that companies adopt, depending on their existing business and technology environments and their post-M&A business goals. Each model has distinctive characteristics in speed of integration, costs, complexity and synergies.

Recent studies have shown that half of the major mergers since 1990 have eroded shareholder returns, while only 17 percent have contributed significant value. 77 percent of acquisitions fail to return - much less generate - more than their cost of capital.
