I stopped by the San Francisco offices of SomaFM and sat down with Rusty Hodge, founder and general manager of SomaFM. SomaFM is a listener-supported, non-commercial Internet radio station that has been around since 1999. With 11 channels and up to 12,000 concurrent listeners, SomaFM has a passionate international following. Rusty talks about SomaFM’s humble beginnings, the station’s growth and the current hot issue of Internet radio copyright licenseing fees being raised to bankruptcy-inducing levels. Rusty takes us on a quick tour of the SomaFM website and a sneak peak behind the scenes at the broadcast control software that makes it all hum along so smoothly.
