Biometric-enabled smart cards have helped the Department of Defense stop hundreds of thousands of unauthorized individuals (including several known terrorists and criminals) from gaining access to U.S. military facilities around the world.
However, according to Mary Dixon, deputy director of the Defense Manpower Data Center, who spoke at the 6th Annual Smart Cards in Government Conference on April 11, the government will not realize the full security potential that smart cards offer without common deployment standards that can be enforced.
This episode of The Big Picture on Security features an edited version of Mary Dixon’s presentation.
