Topix, the world’s largest news community website, recently unveiled its new webpage that allows users to find, report and edit local news. Topix hopes its focus on local news will help fill a niche ignored by many traditional news outlets. To commemorate Topix’s revamped site, PodTech’s Rio Pesino traveled around San Francisco and attended the Web 2.0 Expo asking journalists, bloggers, and locals what is missing from local news.

[…] While reading Brad Linder’s blog post about What Local News is Missing, and his review of Rio Pesino of Podtech.net’s interview of local people on the street, it became apparent to me that my news source is Blogging. Rio! Very cool!! Timely with a great collection of Bay Area media folks and influencers. The production moves — it got me movin’ in my seat. Please don’t stop. Create a longer piece where we can hear more from each person. There will always be something missing, but things are changing faster than ever. From the advent of Radio, TV, the Internet…with each step the pace quickens and people are getting more and more information more easily. The spirit is not to bag on media, but take themes from this video story and show how things can better, more relevant and accessible to people every day. Kudos. Keep workin’ it!!

Great video blog, Rio! I think it’s definitely time to change the outlook on local news to meet the interests of the community it serves. It’s time to show different stories than the the typical scandalous, violent, pop cultural news that we have been accustomed to watching. Please continue to give us more RELEVANT, UP TO DATE local news that applies to the people it serves.
