JP Maeder is head of ZEVCAT, an acronym for Zero Emission Vehicle Compressed Air Technology. His company in Northern California is set up to be a distributor of the Air Car, a concept vehicle designed to run only on compressed air, created by French inventor Guy Negre and his company Moteur Development International, which recently signed an agreement with India’s Tata Motors, as reported here on PodTech by Kamla Bhatt. In this podcast we examine the Air Car and it’s promise, and the challenges JP is having in bringing the car to the U.S., as well as the challenges of the tehcnology itself.

What an interesting interview, in so many ways, refreshing, candid, you can trust this man, you can trust anyone who is so honest about shortcomings and difficulties.
Unfortunately it seems that this technology remains literally “too good to be true” - I wish it wasn’t.
If I was listening properly - when raising funding JP Maeder says he couldn’t get beyond $100k, and had to give that back as it didn’t reach a useful threshold.
I think he also has a day job for income, and has to do this in his spare time.
His idea of storing wind-energy as compressed air is quite well-established, and the use of teh MIDI engine on teh generator would be an interesting development opportunity - if it’s energy efficient then this is the place to prove it.
JP’s closing comments on the urgency of humankind lessening our environmental impact didn’t deal with the realities of consumer demand, marketing and capital. Consumers demand convenience, marketing demands glamour, capital demands profit. It’d be great to see the air car get it all together, but it looks a long way from there.

Hi Michael-thanks for your comments–always great to read your input. I hope the car is more than just “hot air” if you will. Perhaps with Tata Motors involved, it will advace to the next level. Stay tuned!

I would love to see a conversion kit be offered using Angelo Di Pietro’s air engine. If there is a way of retrofitting existing cars with this technology I think that would be best for the earth as well as being more economical.

We want to get rid of our gas cars for air compressed vehicles considering the gas prices are so high and climbing! We cant wait to make a change and start saving money as well as helping our horribly polluted cities. WE ARE ALL FOR AIR COMPRESSED VEHICLES!!! It is the best idea yet, and it will not waste any more of our resources!!! Please notify us as to when people actually get the hint of your marvelous invention. THANK YOU!!

We can not wait to trade in our gas cars for your new invention! Considering the gas prices are so high and climbing. This is the greatest idea I have ever heard, save our environment, not use all our resources and save money of course. Please let us know when these cars go on the market. We are very excited, and cant wait for people to finally get the hint that this is the greatest invention ever!! Thank you!!
