It does not mean much as long as the Flash Player is not open sourced. As long as the applications you build in Flex is run by the not-open Flash Player Adobe has the control. What if the Flash Player encounters drastic changes over time? You are stuck with the old technology, old player.

Check the story on Scobleizer and Podtech. It’s a homerun for the web 2.0 developers as well as a strike against Microsoft

So . . . according to the video, there is great interest in Flex and yet it's going open source? Folks, this is all hogwash. Adobe, and Macromedia before it, failed utterly with Flex. It simply could not sell enough licenses to make a profit. Very few sites use Flex, and those that do were given free licenses (or licenses at steep discounts) just so Adobe could get some press. That's the crux of the story. Also, Adobe is terrified of MS moving in on Flash. So, Adobe is hoping this will spark some interest in Flex and try to get more developers using its technologies instead of MS. In the long run, MS will probably win, but this isn't a terrible idea. I just wish Adobe was up front about the reason instead of wrapping itself in the banner of open source.

[...] This is a major move! A very strategic one I must say. Adobe is certainly trying to kill competition - whether it is OpenLaszlo, or the upcoming Microsoft technologies including WPF/E. Making Flex open source will not only get a lot more visibility for Adobe & Flex, it will also mean a lot more developers who can contribute to Flex, while Adobe focuses on Apollo as a delivery platform for Flex and HTML. I am sensing that Adobe’s got plans to push Apollo real hard. They may even have a couple of very strong products using Flex coming out in the near future. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them is related to entertainment! [...]

I was shocked when I saw the title of this video is written as "Adobe Flash (Flex) goes Open ...", I said to myself it is Flex or Flash. Most of the people know that Flex is build on Flash PLayer and AS3 technology, but the opened source is Flex not Flash an both are different products. Actually, many Flash designer and animators do not relay on AS3 coding much in their work. I hate to limit Flash to be just AS3 coding tool, when it is much more than that. I suggest to remove the Flash word from the title to avoid this confustion.

Thanks alot!!
