The failure of the U.S. government to effectively communicate American values overseas, coupled with the lack of social responsibility on the part of big American business, is helping to foster the conditions that terrorist organizations leverage to recruit new members, at least according to two former top CIA officials and a leading U.S. business executive. According to these officials, interviewed here by Dan Verton, the U.S. strategy in the “War on Terror” needs less military force, better public diplomacy, and more U.S. businesses that are willing to give something back to the poor nations in which their multi-national firms prosper.
