Microsoft Says OK to Licensing Open Source Software

SAN FRANCISCO, February 14, 2006 (PodTech News) — Microsoft has announced it will partner with the open source enterprise software firm SugarCRM, which will launch new products under a Microsoft Community License. The companies, which compete head-to-head as CRM solution providers, say the collaboration serves a significant customer base that chooses to use both Windows-based products as well as open source software.

SugarCRM is the first commercial open source software company to operate on a Windows-based license. Microsoft’s position against open source software has appeared to soften over the past two years. The company says it is less expensive to buy fully tested software from a single vendor who claims responsibility for the performance of the product, than it is to adopt virtually free software that requires consulting and management to make it work.

Microsoft and SugarCRM say they will make many of their products interoperable including Active Directory and Microsoft SQL Server.
