Michael Ondaatje is best known for his novel, The English Patient. He has a new book out called Divisadero. I spoke with him on the San Francisco street that gives the book its name, where he told me why it was the best title for a book set primarily in Petaluma and southern France.

Lucy,
I am a poet and soon-to-be grad student in rural South Carolina. I am fascinated by Ondaatje’s work but haven’t had the pleasure (or the means) to go to a reading of his. I’ve read all of his novels and much of his poetry, and running across your podcast has made my day. Hearing his voice for the first time was like looking into the eyes of Donald Hall (the eyes that once studied Frost and Eliot) as I did a few months ago. Keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
Maghan Lusk
