I really enjoyed listening to John Yemma’s interview as it confirmed what I’ve been suspecting for the past two years: print and broadcast journalists need to pick up online skills or they will not survive in the journalism industry for long. Two years ago I was hired to develop and teach the third year of a print journalism program at Durham College,
located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. That third year is all about giving students, who have trained as print journalists for the first two years, broadcast skills (shooting, editing for radio and TV) and in-depth magazine writing and publishing experience. As well, they get online journalism training using Dreamweaver and Flash. They also learn how to create news features specifically for the web, write news for an online audience and create micro-sites. A news website called DC News was created at the college and students produce online content for the site as part of the program. Although this approach was met with resistance by some traditionalists (some commented that we were teaching skills that wouldn’t be of use to students in the real world) I know that adding the online component to the program was the right thing to do.
