Stanford Economist On Google's China Dilemma

MENLO PARK, June 10, 2006 (PodTech News) — Google co-founder Sergey Brin told reporters in Washington last week that Google “compromised principles” by complying with Chinese government censorship rules. Brin spoke on the heels of reports by the international media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders that China had recently been blocking access to Google.com site. While the group said Friday the blockage seems to have been lifted, the whole scenario brings up some of the ethical questions US internet companies have to grapple with in order to do business in China. PodTech’s Catherine Girardeau went to talk with Ward Hanson at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Hanson analyzes the economics and marketing of new technology and has recently done research in China.
