PodTech’s John Furrier had a chance to sit down with Dean Drako, CEO of Barracuda Networks, to talk about the recent success of his company. Last month Barracuda Networks landed a $40 million dollar investment from some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley which included Sequoia Capital and Francisco Partners. Dean talks candidly during the interview. He smiles while he deflects the question “will you go public”?

Barracuda Networks was PodTech’s first sponsor back in May 2005. Dean talks about how the podcasts and sponsorship of PodTech really contributed to getting the word out about Barracuda.

During my meeting with Dean we also talked about entrepreneurship and how to grow your business without taking venture capital. That podcast will be posted later this week under the entrepreneurship channel on PodTech.

State of the Union on Virus - “It’s a brutal environment” with Zach Levow

Zach Levow, CoFounder and CTO Barracuda Networks

Host: John Furrier, Founder PodTech.net - “Fresh Voices of Silicon Valley, Technology, and Media”

Timeshifted from the Barracuda Networks world headquarters. As a followup to Topic 1 Zach talks about the state of the union on email spam and spyware for businesses. He discussed the issues and challenges. Specifically the business issues both infrastructure and costs, policy, the current defense mindset, and other insightful information.

What’s important here is the role that open source software plays in developing the best solution for fighting vunlerablilites at new groundbreaking price points.

Also Zach talks about the innovative approach used in developing low cost and high performance application firewall technology to enhance security not to replace traditional firewalls. This new “Application Firewall Solution” becomes the true gateway to the network both inbound and outbound traffic.

As Zach says “It’s about application security for businesses both large and small in order to protect your network. It’s about putting a box on your network with almost no configuration ..that will be able to stop your security problems like spyware and email spam…Without you having you to monitor babysit it and taking headcount or resources off of other important IT projects on a daily basis.”
