Typically, a mortgage servicer collects payments from the borrowers, and above all, manages the day-to-day relationship. When a borrower cannot commit to a payment schedule or has come into an unfortunate time, the mortgage servicer is the one who will work out a plan and determine the best course of action for all parties.

With a large number of borrowers being threatened with the recent credit crisis, there is a lot at stake. Many individuals are at risk of losing their home and/or business and the servicer is stepping in to help remedy the situation. With assistance comes some monitoring on the borrowers end. Anyone who has contact with a servicer needs to be concerned with how they are managing the relationship. Luckily, there are resources such as data reports that the servicer is required to supply. It’s essential that the stakeholders talk to the servicers, those that are managing the operations and the default managers. The most important thing is that a stakeholder needs to be truly sure that they understand the risks and how they can manage those risks and take proper precautions. If they don’t have the expertise, they need to find someone who does.

The Battle to Monitor Reputational Risk

Reputational risk is a term that is typically used to identify the result of something that changes the perspective of a company. A prime example is the recent credit crisis. Even companies that were not directly affected by it, but had “credit” in their business description, were quickly identified as a threat. Many vendors stopped their association with them and clients ran to competitors for guidance. Now more than ever, it’s extremely important to safeguard a company’s reputation. The reputation is currently serving as the sole source of economic value of a firm.

In a situation where the reputation being portrayed is incorrect, a company must have the ability to quickly respond to such criticism, prior to any real damage being done. The key to preventing such a travesty is to understand the sources of your risk and determine what the potential impacts would be. There are also many ways to determine how a company is currently perceived, such as its stock price, customer acquisition and customer patterns. These are clear indications of your favorability and a clear indicator if changes need to be made.

Key executives need to know how their company is being displayed in the marketplace and how they are being evaluated through a stakeholder prism. Many times, a company is not aware of its perception in the marketplace until it’s too late. With all the new technology available, it’s easier than ever to monitor your company’s reputation. It’s the responsibility of the executives to have a clear message relayed to their employees so that everyone assembles under one culture. It is only then that people will band together to ensure the company’s perception remains positive and “outs” anyone who strays from what has been clearly outlined as the company’s standards.

Intel Helps Developers With Multi-Threaded Software Community

In this podcast, The Register’s Tim Phillips speaks with Intel’s Shesha Krishnapura about developers’ adoption of multi-core technology. Krishnapura sees that, while multi-core processors have been around for awhile, now is an especially exciting time for multi-threaded software, given the uptake in industry and the increasingly urgent need for the software that will help to realize the higher performance potential of multi-core. Intel is leading the effort to adopt with key software packages and developer tools that make it easier to write multi-threaded code.

Intel’s Craig Barrett: Malaysia’s on Track

Intel’s Craig Barrett says that private companies can’t go it alone when trying to make a difference in developing markets, and neither can governments. In a visit to Malaysia, the chairman of the chip giant stopped off at Penang, where the company has committed itself to help local schools. Barrett, a former professor at Stanford University, is a big believer in education, especially in developing teachers. Barrett also appeared at the 16th World Congress on Information Technology where he delivered a keynote reaffirming his belief that real change can happen when governments and private industry team up.

Intel Lowers Energy Costs for High Performance Computing

The current uptake in high performance computing means mostly good things, but it also comes with a few built-in challenges. The paradox of this particular progress is this: when you scale hardware, you oftentimes scale power consumption, right along with it. That’s where Intel’s Shesha Krishnapura has some good news to share, in this podcast speaking with The Register’s Tim Phillips. Says Krishnapura, “In the past, that power relationship has existed. But with Intel’s core microarchitecture platform, the power holds constant while performance climbs.”

Intel is working to improve the performance-per-watt characteristics of HPC systems. The effort is important, as Xeon-based servers dominate the Top 500 supercomputers list and the clusters used by businesses for their most demanding jobs.

Fist of all, Intel’s throughput-per-rack measurement helps illustrate the point when Intel 45nm-based quad-core processors run at similar power levels as dual-core processors, while offering twice the number of processing cores per server. Add Intel’s switch to higher density memory like 4GB memory modules instead of 2GB modules — the 4GB run at similar power envelope — and it’s clear where Intel is holding a fairly stable power envelope and still seen what Krishnapura calls, “a substantial performance increase, year after year.”

Virtual Desktops - The Wave of the Future?

Over the last few years, there has been a lot of buzz around virtualization, although it’s only recently that organizations have begun to embrace it. Statistics show that by the year 2011 there will be 700 million users. This is a bold prediction that has many people investing heavily in this solution as a new offering for their clients.

A virtual desktop is one where all computing happens remotely. It contains a very simple screen that allows you to replace the heavy workstations that are currently being used by the majority of companies. Virtual desktops provide a “virtual” space, in which the user can place all their application software. The most compelling argument that vendors use to convince organizations to buy in to this solution is the fact that all the data and applications are in one secure location. Someone can still manage all of their employee’s desktops, even when the computer is off.

The recent trend has been for companies to move to Windows Vista. This allows an organization to keep the same hardware, which is a viable solution to cut costs. So, why are some people hesitant to invest in this? The answer seems to be that virtual desktops are not a “one size fits all” solution - but there are ways for easy implementation, which is where BearingPoint comes in. Intel ISEF 2008: Atlanta Hosts Global Science Fair

In this video podcast, Dr. Oren Shriki, a science teacher at the Israel Arts and Sciences Academy, speaks about Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, taking place in Atlanta, May 11-16. (As excitement builds toward the event’s opening, you can follow along on a dedicated Intel ISEF blog.)

Many of the best young scientists from around the world will attend, selected through regional science fairs for a wide range of skills, from identifying and addressing important scientific challenges or questions to using organized and logical thought to reach conclusions. The participants in Intel ISEF are very likely to be tomorrow’s leaders in technology, medicine and health, agriculture, environmental science and engineering.

During Intel ISEF, their work will be judged by professional scientists who will look for gifted communicators with excellent foundational understanding in specific research and the scientific process.

No matter what the judges decide, however, participants in the annual event will benefit from meeting their peers from around the world, hearing from Nobel laureates and scientists involved in the same kinds of research as theirs, and also creating lasting memories, like those found on the blog of 2004 ISEF alum (and member of a Fourth Award-winning team) Jayson Reggie Obos.

Voices of Shanghai: IDF 2008

This year’s Spring IDF, in Shanghai, brought the global community of Intel developers to one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, to discuss one of the most rapidly-changing technologies, and the incredible impact that all of that change is bound to have. Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, referred to Intel’s efforts broadly as “architecture for life.” If it sounds ambitious, it is.

The speed of change in the software world is daunting. In his own keynote, SVP and General Manager of the Ultra Mobility Group at Intel, Anand Chandrasekher, noted that everyone is trying to “unleash the Internet, unwire it, and make it go mobile.” Again, the words sound almost obvious, like common sense. They’re not.

It’s true that Intel specializes in bringing incredible advancements to technology on a tick-tock product development schedule that allows industries to grow and thrive. You can see in the matter of weeks and months that Intel’s efforts go from being rumor to being confirmed technological advances (like the recent Dunnington news) that the world is watching itself change in real time. It’s true that a lot of time at IDF in Shanghai was devoted to presentations on specific technologies, platforms and products.

We heard a lot more about Nehalem, about visual computing, about multithreaded CPUs (And just for fun, compare this detailed look at Intel’s sometimes-inscrutable codenames with a detailed look at those same codenames, from a slightly different perspective). Keynotes from Gelsinger and Chandrasekher, along with Software and Solutions Group General Manager and Intel Vice President Renee James and Intel’s Andrew Chien helped to clarify just how much more mobile our technology will allow us to be.

But always in the backdrop was Shanghai. In this video podcast, Jason Lopez connects the dots between Intel’s efforts to push technology past its limits and Shanghai’s amazing journey to pass its own.
