The Reboot: Rhythm Games at E3 2008

Several rhythm games made their debut at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. The genre has gained popularity and developers have demonstrated the ability to create different styles of gameplay, from the complexity of Guitar Hero to the simplicity of Wii Music. In episode of The Reboot, host Rio Pesino previews some of the latest rhythm games shown at E3, including Wii Music, Rock Band 2 and Samba De Amigo.

Game Developer Harmonix changed the video game industry last year by releasing Rock Band, a popular game that uses not only a guitar, but drums and a microphone as well. The game has prompted other games to step their game up by including additional instruments, including Activision’s Guitar Hero World Tour and Konami’s Rock Revolution. In this episode of The Reboot, Harmonix’s John Drake demos Rock Band 2 at E3 2008. The game features a larger track list, improved guitar and drum peripherals and an improved World Tour and Battle of the Bands mode.

The Reboot: Sports Games at E3

Cool New Tools From Belkin

I’ve always loved the little devices that Belkin makes, especially for frugal geeks like myself.

In an earlier podcast with the Frag Dolls, we covered Belkin’s new game controller, and this time, Belkin’s Robert Naugle shows some of the other gadgets they’re releasing; like the Podcast Studio, which takes advantage of the iPod Voice Memo feature, and gives you stereo mics gain control, pro mic inputs and more, the N1 Vision, a smart router with sensible readouts and computerless setup, a Network USB Hub, and Flywire, their wireless HD transmitter. AMD’s little black box in the BlogHaus

Loren Feldman wanted to know what was in a random black box he saw at the BlogHaus. AMD’s Arun Sabnis showed him the fastest graphics card on the planet - the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 - but it’s an even more special, limited version of the X2 released a few weeks ago. blueEnergy: Focused on Sustainable Development

San Francisco-based blueEnergy provides sustainable energy services to isolated communities in Nicaragua. Mathias Craig, executive director and chairman of the board of the nonprofit corporation, was on-hand last year to receive the prestigious Accenture Economic Development Award at the Tech Museum Awards, presented by Aplied Materials. He spoke to PodTech for this video podcast, live at the Tech Museum.

blueEnergy brings electrification to remote regions by building power systems that convert energy from wind turbines to battery power. Their efforts have brought lighting and refrigeration to towns along the Caribbean coast on Nicaragua, where less than 20 percent of the population has ready access to electricity. Their systems are built from scratch, relying on local labor that ends up providing training of local laborers, increasing skills and local economic opportunities, while providing a critical necessity for continued economic development through electricity.

Long before his efforts in Nicaragua earned him and his growing company high-profile status as one of CNN’s “Community Crusader” 2007 Heroes, Craig and his brother were aware of the need for electricity in rural Nicaragua. Their mother, a linguist, spent time in the remote region, where only about 20 percent of the settlements have electrification.

The Reboot: CES 2008

The Consumer Electronics Show usually isn’t a big show for gamers, but this year’s event was expected to be different. CES dedicated more show floor space for its Gaming Showcase and there were even rumors that Microsoft’s Bill Gates would reveal a new version of the Xbox 360 at the event. Instead, gamers who attended CES were disappointed with no announcement of a new 360 and a Gaming Showcase that was lacking in video games. However, there were some major gaming annoucements made at CES. Sony used the event to promote new Playstation Portable applications and show off its most creative game yet, while Microsoft unveiled several new Games for Windows, including Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures and Space Siege. Texas Instruments also showed off its DualView technology, which could change the face of gaming forever. In this episode of The Reboot, host Rio Pesino gives you his take on what stood out at CES.
