Pokey Lafarge Part 2

The Earthways Festival is a showcase of green technology and practice held once a year at the Earthways Center in St. Louis. The Earthways Center was etablished by the Missouri Botanical Garden to promote sustanability through environmental education and improving the Built environment.

The Cripplers

The Cripplers were one of the finest, trashiest garage/punk/rock’n'roll bands to ever come out of the Midwest. Originally from Columbia, Missouri, the band relocated to St. Louis in the late 1990s. Their debut LP “One More for the Bad Guys” was released on the popular garage/retro rock label Dionysus Records in 2001. The Cripplers played their final live gig in early 2006; Jeff Sigmon went on the form The Kings of Pop while Tim Hopmeier joined the lineups of Long John Thomas and the Duffs and Chief. This is from their reunion show at the Show-me Blowout.

Craig Moore with the Nevermores

This episode, I have something really special. It’s a performance from the Show-me Blowout by the 60’s garage rocker Craig Moore. Craig Moore was one of the original members of the 1960’s band Gonn from Keokuk, [tag]Iowa. Now I don’t really expect you to have heard of Gonn because they never really broke out as a national act. But one of their records, Break Out Of Gretely did become a classic long after the band broke up when collectors started digging up forgotten garage rock recordings from the 60’s. And it was included on the essential collection of underground garage rock, Nuggets Vol. 1. The band recorded about 13 songs in their short carreer in the 60’s and one other one, Doin Me In got some notoriety in the late 90’s when it was finally released for the first time on the compilation Essential Pebbles collection Vol. 10 released by AIP records (one of the Bomp lables). And that is the song I have for you on this episode of LO-FI SAINT LOUIS, Craig Moore performed this song with The Nevermores (our own local St. Louis garage rock gods) at the SHowme bLowout a couple of weeks ago. Craig is 61 years old now and a grandfather, but he still rocks and he still has that classic scream.

The Alley Cat Revue

The Alley Cat Revue at Rue 13 is on the vanguard of fine Burlesque entertainment in the Mid-west. I spoke to the lovely and talented Lola Van Ella about the history of the current state of the “neo-burlesque” movement.

Victoria

Victoria is a band that seems to have come out of nowhere–well for me anyway. They’re still pretty new but they really rocked Off Broadway about a week ago.

Also upcoming on LO-FI SAINT LOUIS, we have a video about the neo-burlesque scene that we’ve been working on for almost a year, and plenty of good stuff from this weekend. So stay tuned!

Tenement Ruth

Tenement Ruth describe themselves as a roots rock band with a twist of Americana. I really dig their two-part female vocal hamonies and the touch of twangy Americana in their music. I recently visited Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School at the Atomic Cowboy in St. Louis. This is one of the newest chapters of Dr. Sketchy’s anti-art School that started in Brooklyn. It’s a unique event thats part figure drawing class and part party, with performances and contests. Great fun for real artists and fake artists alike!
