Chris Thomas, chief strategist at Intel, recognizes that a new generation of users is pushing the pace of change in the marketplace — even developing products they want themselves. Thomas predicts that community innovation will intersect with development best practices to bring a rapid adoption of new tools and technologies, all leading to a baseline goal: smoother, simpler and more transparent user interfaces. PodTech’s John Furrier spoke with Thomas at Supernova 2006.

Ask Craig Newmark why he hasn’t made multi-millions off of Craigslist and he’ll look at you as if it’s an odd question.
{Podcast sponsored by Barracuda Networks - Best Email Spam and Spyware Appliance and No per user license fee}

John is a great guy, industry veteran, and technologist who always has a “Fresh Voice” on technology and new technical revolutions. John has spent 38 years working at IBM and was their VP of Internet Technology when the Internet hit the scene. John is a accomplished writer, consultant, and industry technologist. John has a unique view on the next generation Internet. John is the classic “been there and done that” technologist and executive. He’s one of those people who witnessed and participated in the development of the web. Must listen to for anyone interested in the newest trends in technology and the tech business.

Download and Listen to John Patrick’s InfoTalk on the Next Generation Internet

Sound bites:

Most interesting time has been the past 15 years… one thing that’s clear through all the key industry building technology and business cycles many of the things that people are skeptical about (blogging, podcasting, ..etc) mirrors what the state of the industry in 1995. some people would argue that blogging is mainstream but it really isn’t yet…same with wifi and voip…..

Impact to marketing - blogging and podcasting basically kills the notion and effectiveness of the corporate “Email Newsletter”

More great stuff – listen to the podcast …

Multiplayer online game developer Linden Lab Second Life. Doug Soo Linden Lab Programmer who helped with the design of the game Second Life.

Host: John Furrier, Founder of PodTech.net

{Podcast sponsored by Barracuda Networks - Best Email Spam and Spyware Appliance and No per user license fee}

This is a cool game that has a built in open source development model into the action. That’s right players can develop apps and products inside the game. Second Life’s dynamic nature in my opinion will shape the future of gaming and the future of work and possibly education. This is the model of the future.

Correction from Douglas Soo….He says “I’m one of the developers, but not specifically the designer, I assisted in design of Second Life, like most of the other developers, but Philip (the CEO of Linden Lab) is the founder and driver of most of its ideas and core concepts. I guess I never got around to explaining it in the podcast, but currently Second Life is 18 and over only, because some the content created by our residents is more mature and not appropriate for children. We are currently working on making Second Life available for 13-17 year olds as well - I believe that given the requirements of COPA it would be difficult or impossible for us to make it available to younger children, unfortunately.”

Thanks for the update

Supernova PodTech InfoTalk™ Podcast - Future of decentralized computing with blogs

Andrew is a great guy and hits some great points on where the blogs are going… It’s must listen …

Sound bites:

Question: Where is the blog world going? Andrew: It’s going everywhere ..a great year for the industry. Cover story on Business Week article recently made the statement “Blogs will matter and change your business.”. What we’ve seen is that we’re going past just blogging …200 m people soon to be blogging…it’s about a mass approach…broadly horizontal use cases…six apart is doing anything we can to enable blogging…

Blogging is becoming the personal publishing platform but more than that …at it core is communications… not about low end content mgt it’s really about closed loop of communications – it’s a conversation… the blog post is not as a statement but the start of a conversation between tools like comments and trackbacks that tease out the interraltionship between blogs you get a sense of a much larger dialog. Traditional media have only been about a one way dialog.

Marketing with blogs: Watch out for the “Bullshit Screen”
With blogs marketers need to learn about honesty… you get called out in the blog world between the back and forth there is a ‘bullshit screen’…it very hard to create a standard party line with blogs.. You can’t fake it in the blog world. The critical thing is that you have to get in early and participate and can’t jump in too late… there isn’t a handbook and you need to learn what blogging means for your company.

SixApart products: Typepad – conversation for the masses; LiveJournal - conversation for small groups

Wild Prediction: Believes that everyone will have a blog account just like people have email accounts today.

Being an ex-programmer myself I love this InfoTalk. Jesse is famous for coining the term AJAX. AJAX’s popularity among developers is growing like crazy - a new kind of interaction model. AJAX is a great way to use maturing technologies in a solid framework to make web enable application. Look no further than Google where the word has it is using AJAX religiously for app development (i.e. gmail).

Great stuff Jesse. Jesse’s site is at www.AdaptivePath.com

Entrepreneur Jeremy Allaire – Founder and President BrightCove on New Media. This is a must listen to for anyone interested in the “New new media” industry. Jeremy is someone who is real PRO who has been involved in the evolution of the Web from Day1.

Host:  John Furrier, Founder PodTech.net

Jeremy knows where this evolution is going.

Download and Listen to Jeremy Allaire’s InfoTalk on New New Media

{Podcast sponsored by Barracuda Networks - Best Email Spam and Spyware Appliance and No per user license fee}

Sound bites:

BrightCove – A startup founded by Jeremy over a year ago – platform and service for the distribution of television over the internet.

Traditional programming and set of new publishers will shift the nature our experience of television – things like commoditization of storage and networks, devices, and an Internet that now works is the basis of this ‘shift’.

What’s shifting with video is the blowing apart of the scarcity constraints. Traditionally it was controlled by the path to the user and proprietary technology. Now we have ‘open pipes’, open with respect to devices, open formats (software), and now open publishing.

Now you effectively have an unlimited capacity for video and audo. Video will mirror text. It’s about a ‘recorded life’ – soccer games, family, ..etc

The notion of programs, programmers, and program guide as we know it will be radically different in 10 years.

prediction on the big trend: open publishing…millions of publishing…news ways of monetization …new economics….user choice….. challenge: make easy and straightforward for the user

This is great new stuff from Suw! Suw and I talk about her recent research “Dark Blogs”. Actual research with customer use case data. The “Dark Blogs” – blogs that are behind the firewall or where users from the outside can’t see – also know as private blogs.

With Dark Blogs it’s not about popularity but about communicating information not about traffic. Core purpose of blogging allow people to communicate and converse around topics. Suw agrees with Mena from SixApart that in most cases small blogs are more important than big massive broadcast blogs.

Great discussion on why blogs are important for companies. Must listen for CIOs or IT managers looking at blogs for their enterprises.

Blogging is like a redwood tree in the forest…trees are different podcasting blogs, the mapping is the root system….It’s about the conversation..it’s about building things and sharing things and it’s about getting customers to tell me what’s works..

{abrupt interruption: Marc Canter enters the room…Mark Canter says ..yo yo yo… keep these podcasts short, concise, articulate and fully indexed)

Right now it feels like 1989…if you wanted to share yourself in 1989 you had to buy multiple programs (very disparate) then Bill Gates came out with office ..Tools like AudioBlog.com .. etc… podcast shows need services - one stop shop

Things will get easier by the big players…packaging it up and making it turnkey.. the aggregators will go through a renaissance…What happens when half the family is blogging? Too many steps to visit everyone. You’ll see a better aggregator come along.

Top things happening: Portable devices…blogs and podcasting on cell phones..Nokia: will ship over 40 million mp3 players this year in phones. The future: Mapping ..Google lays down the first warning shot… wait til you can take a picture of a sushi restaurant and leave a location on a map?

{interruption by Marc Canter.. banging on the door …Marc has way to many whiskeys?)

Blogs are efficient but podcasting adds more to blogs..Podcasting allows you to know someone more.. and take them to a new place that you can’t do with text (blogs) … podcasting allows you to listen in your car and places where you don’t normally read.

Big RSS announcement from Microsoft at Gnomedex ?

I had a great chat with the two leading executives of NextPage Cydni the VP of Marketing and Tom the CTO. I am a skeptic on enterprise software given the world is moving away from traditional software, but I’m impressed with the NextPage story. Complexity of documents only will grow. These guys seem to have the right model in terms of reducing the hassles of users and increasing the productivity for users. The key seems to be the deployment scenario for enterprises. This is must listen for IT Managers and CIOs.

Most large enterprise pour good money after bad into software based document management issues. NextPage is a service for the document chaos problem that only gets worse in the “real time web”. This is very informative in order to understand a old and growing problem in document complexity in the new world of managed services.
