Intel’s Craig Barrett: Malaysia’s on Track

Intel’s Craig Barrett says that private companies can’t go it alone when trying to make a difference in developing markets, and neither can governments. In a visit to Malaysia, the chairman of the chip giant stopped off at Penang, where the company has committed itself to help local schools. Barrett, a former professor at Stanford University, is a big believer in education, especially in developing teachers. Barrett also appeared at the 16th World Congress on Information Technology where he delivered a keynote reaffirming his belief that real change can happen when governments and private industry team up.

Intel to Work with Grameen Bank

In a surprise announcement at the 16th World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett informed a keynote audience that the world’s biggest chipmaker would work together with Grameen Bank. The financial institution was started by Professor Muhammad Yunus as a way to provide credit to the rural poor in Bangladesh without collateral. Yunus was awarded the Nobel Prize for his efforts in 2006. In this podcast Barrett, along with Yunus via pre-recorded video, unveil the joint venture.

During the awards dinner, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett joked, after seeing the quality of work from the high school finalists in the the Intel Science Talent Search 2008, that he felt like burning his Ph.D. dissertation. But the depth of research practiced by the finalists is astonishing. The winner of the competition, Shivani Sud of Durham, N.C., says she will continue to develop her study of genomics and the prevention of recurring cancer. PodTech’s Jason Lopez prepared this podcast featuring all ten of the top finishers describing their projects.

Making Telemedicine Work in Nigeria

Nigeria is a country in need of fast solutions and perhaps the fastest solution is needed in healthcare. Conferencing technologies, which many in the developed world yawn at, are critical to making telemedicine work. But there’s more to deploying it than setting up cameras and laptops, otherwise companies like Intel–which is sponsoring such projects in the developing world–would have considered its mission complete years ago. There are other issues. PodTech’s Jason Lopez witnessed a project while shadowing Intel Chairman Craig Barrett on a tour of the National Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria.

Intel World Ahead: Education in Nigeria

Nigeria’s education system is one of the targets of the UN’s Millenium Development Goals. Some of those goals are to reduce infant mortality, combat AIDS, malaria & other diseases, and of course improve education worldwide. The millennium goal for education is to ensure, by 2015, that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling. In Nigeria only about 6 out of 10 kids attends primary school. In the poorest bracket many children who do go to school start late in terms of their ages and end up chronically behind. Intel’s push to bring low cost laptops to school children in Nigeria is an effort to help the country meet the millenium development goals. PodTech’s Jason Lopez was in Abuja, Nigeria for Intel covering Chairman Craig Barrett’s visit and filed this podcast.

Journey to Connect Africa: First Leg, Lagos

Barrett, who heads up the UN’s Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN GAID), is accompanied by PodTech’s Jason Lopez, who files this podcast report from Lagos, Nigeria. The digital divide is at the heart of this week’s Connect Africa Summit, but from Lopez’s reporting so far, it’s not just a digital divide.

ICT Access for Africa: Intel, UN and ITU Efforts to Globalize Broadband

Broadband, connectivity, Wi-Fi, accessibility and education efforts are all priorities for the ongoing efforts in developing nations and regions around the globe. Intel, along with the United Nations and International Telecommunication Union (ITU), among others, is participating this month in the Connect Africa Summit, which aims to bring together human, technical and financial resources to speed development and improvement of Africa’s Information and Communication Technology, or ICT infrastructure. Expanding broadband, wireless and mobile access technologies is the current push, after indications that Africa’s general ICT development is lagging behind its unprecedented adoption of mobile phone technology (400 percent in just a few years - well ahead of projections).

Dr. Hamadoun Touré is secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union. His call for what he refers to as a “Marshall Plan for ICT infrastructure development in Africa,” has been heard by the United Nations, and particularly by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett who, leading the UN’s Global Alliance for ICT and Development, or UN GAID, is working to bring the leading ICT companies in Silicon Valley and around the world to the challenges in Africa.

The United Nations’s Millennium Development Goals are driving innovation around the world, as the challenge of reducing global poverty by half by 2015 looms. The Connect Africa effort brings together private enterprise and non-governmental organizations for a two-day summit in Kigali, Rwanda, beginning on October 29, hosted by Rwanda President Paul Kagame and John Kufour, president of Ghana and chairman of the African Union.

Intel’s World Ahead Program, established in May 2006, has already seen the chip maker pledge more than $1 billion over five years to bridge the digital divide and bring full access to technology to the developing world.

The World Is Changing

Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair has been described as a junior Nobel Prize competition, as more than a thousand high school kids from around the world come together to show their work and make connections. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett, who is attending the fair, says the global science community still calls the U.S. a focal point, but less so, as the rest of the world participates more and more in research and the making of technology. In this podcast, Barrett spoke with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about this year’s ISEF being held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Pictured on the PodTech player is junior high school student Lawrence Stringer (photo taken by Lloyd Gallman, Montgomery Advertiser) who is not a participant in this year’s ISEF. But Barrett has been a champion of improving science education at all levels to maintain the competitiveness of the U.S. in technology and industry.

Intel Chairman Craig Barrett says Silicon Valley IT companies are in the right place at the right time to help the United Nations address the world’s health, education, and economic problems. Barrett, who has been appointed the chairman of the U.N.’s Global Alliance for ICT and Development, says, “My job is to make sure that we don’t talk a lot, but we do a lot.” The Alliance will meet today at the the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., to discuss the role of Silicon Valley in the U.N.’s information technology goals. PodTech’s Jason Lopez interviewed Intel’s chairman at the company’s headquarters in Santa Clara. Intel made this video possible.

Intel to Host UN Meeting

I’m Jason Lopez for PodTech.net. The United Nations faces some of its biggest challenges yet with global issues like World Hunger, Healthcare, Education, and Economic Development in third world regions. The UN has reached out to Silicon Valley for help with the solutions.

There are eight goals. Among them is to reduce poverty by half by 2015. Reduce infant mortality and improve Maternal Healthcare, improve the Environment, improve Gender Status, and Health and Education, Universal Primary Healthcare, Universal Primary Education. Now, these are very ambitious goals.

Sarbuland Khan – the UN
The last fifty or sixty years of development has shown that the present model of development does not deliver on large scale. We have achieved success at small scale level but to scale it up and achieve universal approaches and solutions is very difficult.

We tried to make it very clear at the first meeting we had that; this is not a debating society not a talking society.

Jason Lopez – PodTech
Craig Barrett is Chairman of the chipmaker Intel and was appointed to the Chairman of The Global Alliance for ICT Development. The alliance is a Public–Private Partnership between IT companies and the UN. Later this month, Barrett hosts representatives of the UN and IT partner companies in a meeting to identify ways that Information Technology can help solve some of the world’s most significant problems. Barrett says The Global Alliance has already started to lay the groundwork in few areas.

Craig Barrett – INTEL
One is Broadband for Africa, one is wiring up digital services, one is a — kind of a volunteer core of IT specialists to go around the world to help implement these things. Another potential area is IT and Communication Technology for the disabled or the handicapped. But, we are not trying to solve World Hunger, we’re not trying to do everything for everybody, and we have made it very clear that it’s not a debating society, it’s an action oriented group. If we don’t get action, we don’t get results and I think everyone will get tired very quickly and go away. My job is to make sure that we don’t talk a lot, but we do a lot. The technology we bring to the game could not be more important and it’s a kind of the cream has risen to the top and we are involved in this very high level, very important, very basic activity. We just happened to be at the right place at the right time, in terms of what the world needs and what governments around the world want from its citizens.

Jason Lopez – PodTech
It may come as a surprise that information technology is revolutionizing among other things the way modern hospitals operate. That kind of expertise could have a major impact on merely delivering healthcare in third world regions. For podtech.net I’m Jason Lopez.

Intel Invests in Wireless-enabled Amazon… River That Is

SANTA CLARA, Calif., September 20, 2006 (PodTech News) — Intel has chosen to help develop the the IT infrastructure of the Amazon — not the online seller but a portion of the actual river. The initiative is a part of Intel’s World Ahead Program, which the company established in May and pledged more than $1 billion over the next 5 years, to bring Internet coverage to various regions around the world. This week Intel Chairman Craig Barrett will promote wireless broadband PC access in Parantins, a remote Brazilian city of about 100,000 on the Amazon River. He says the company’s aim is to introduce components of a comprehensive strategy that includes hardware and wireless capability. (more…)

Intel Chairman Says Computers are Important in Schools But Good Teachers Are the Magic

Intel’s Craig Barrett says K-12 schools in the U.S. must measure themselves against the world and not just against each other. The chairman of the world’s largest chip company spoke about improving America’s economic competitiveness before writers and journalists at a conference of the Education Writers Association in New Orleans. “It’s not a patriotic thing, it’s not a nationalist thing–I just chase the best talent,” Barrett explained, referring to Intel’s practice of hiring workers globally. “If the education system is better elsewhere, talent is more productive, that’s where I’ll go.” But he added, “I want for my grandchildren the same opportunity that I had when the United States was essentially the only game in town.”
