Two years ago Ethan Zuckerman and Rebecca McKinnon conceived and started a project called Global Voices. The goal of the project is to capture the global conversations on the Internet from parts of the world that we don’t hear much about.
One of the interesting things that Global Voices does is translate blogs into different languages. For instance, they translate blogs from Arabic to English, and vice versa. In two years their project has grown and today they get millions of visitors from all over the world. Besides aggregating conversations, Global Voices also provides tools and advice for bloggers on how to blog safely.
Global Voices has a small team of editors who read hundreds of blogs and update the Global Voices website. They also have a group of dedicated volunteers who aggregate and provide regular round-ups from various regions of the world.
The challenge for Global Voices is to scale and maintain the interest of their bloggers and readers. And those are the areas that Global Voices is going to focus in the coming year when they morph and become a full-fledged non-profit entity.
