Today Adobe is shipping its CS3 Suite of developer and design tools, so I headed up to Adobe to get several interviews with product teams. Here you meet Rich Galvan, technical product manager for Flash, where we sit down and discover what’s new in Flash.

Video from CodecSys Saves Bandwidth

With Internet bandwidth demand doubling each year, broadcast media, IPTV, and new user-generated YouTube-style video are culprits exacerbating the problem. This is where and their new CodecSys offering can help reduce bandwidth for video applications by 50% or more, including High Definition (HD).

For the lay person, digital video is created with a video codec that encodes and compresses a stream of information. There are numerous codecs, each offering its own benefit and/or tradeoffs for visual or audio quality and file size.

Unlike traditional systems that force a single codec, CodecSys runs each frame of video past a collection of the codecs and determines which codec is best for that particular frame or series of frames. Exploiting attributes of multiple codecs, CodecSys can reduce bandwidth needs by 50-75%. Since it’s a software solution, new codecs can easily be incorporated into the system.

Force.com Chalk Talk: Salesforce.com, Adobe and StakeWare part 2

Is Flash remaining a secure choice for web service? Will AIR and multi-tenant architecture from Salesforce.com become the industry standard for customer relationship management?

In the first episode of Force.com’s Chalk Talk, Adam Gross presented Salesforce.com’s demo and in part two he introduces James Ward (Technical Evangelist) from Adobe.

Text UI to client server applications to web applications led to compromises within the UI. Adobe has returned with an improved user interface through their Flex software and partnership with Salesforce.com open architecture.

GME’s Anthony Lo on the Opel Flextreme

During the Frankfurt Auto Show, I had the opportunity to sit down with Anthony Lo, design director for General Motors Europe Advanced. Anthony led the team that brough the Opel Flextreme from drawing board to it’s unveiling in Germany last month. Designed on the same E-Flex platform as the Chevy Volt, the Flextreme came to be in a remarkably short time, less than 9 months.

Teknision, Branded Applications, and Agile Design

While in Ottawa this week, I had the chance to chat with Teknision’s Gabor Vida and Tony MacDonell in an empty conference room at the Ottawa Sheraton. Teknision works primarily in Flash-based technologies — Flash, Flex, and AIR — and serves as a good example of the “designer/developer” role that I’ve seen emerge over the past year as Ajax and RIA have gone mainstream.

Gabor and Tony explain what it means when they say they created “branded applications,” a concept that Teknision is well known for and and successful with. We then get into one of my favorite topics for small shops: how do you manage the ongoing relationship with clients, esp. pushy ones. On this topic, we talk about what I’d call “agile design,” or the way that agile software development ideas and practices can be applied to the design/developer process.

Opel Astra Coming to America

The second-best selling car in Europe (only behind the VW Golf), the Opel Astra, is coming to America under the Saturn brand. The vehicle is expected to arrive on American shores in early 2008, and get this, for around $15k! Fully loaded, you can expect it to retail closer to $20k, but for that price I was amazed at what you get. (Especially when you consider the smart Fortwo will arrive at about the same time and at the smae price.) I saw this car in Chicago where I spoke with Jill Lajdziak about the vehicle. Of course, they hadn’t announced the price at that time, and I wasn’t able to take it for a test drive. However, during the Frankfurt Auto Show, we got a chance to get behind the wheel on the Opel test track and I was able to get the car to about 220kph or 130mph. What fun! Sadly though, I wasn’t able to get a camera in the vehicle because of legal issues, but Chris and Ponzi Pirillo mounted one inside for their test drive. You can watch their video here.

VTap brings innovative video search to cell phones

This is a killer app for your cell phone or iPhone. Why? Getting video onto your cell phone is often impossible. Many sites use Flash only, and don’t provide a format that will work on your cell phone. Well, VTap lets you search for videos like, say, “Ask a Ninja,” and then watch them. If it isn’t in the right format, VTap automatically transcribes it into the right format for your cell phone (or iPhone). This is an awesome app and Murali Aravamudan, CEO of Veveo, talks with me about it and demonstrates it.

Seagate announces hybrid drive for laptops

In this podcast, Marc Jourlait, Seagate’s VP of Global Marketing, talks with PodTech’s Michael Johnson about hybrid hard drives, a combination of Flash and hard drives with new features like faster startup time, increased battery life for laptops, and more. Jourlait says that currently, Windows Vista is the only OS able to take advantage of the hybrid drive’s special capabilities, through Vista’s ReadyDrive technology. Europa Mylyn Demo - Task Management and Context Filtering for Teams

Coté talks with Mik Kersten of the Eclipse Mylyn team about the most recent version of Mylyn (formally Mylar) in Eclipse Europa. In a brief video segment, Mik gives us a quick overview of Mylyn’s goals as a task and “task context” plugin to Eclipse. Mylyn integrates with issue and task tracking applications like BugZilla, trac, and Rally, giving Eclipse users a normalized and team-driven GUI for task management. Tightly-linked to tasks is the idea of creating and managing “task contexts” which focus your code-base and related project down to just the items related to a task. These task contexts are saved with the task and can be shared among the team to get highly-focused views of the project, cutting away the inevitable clutter that even the most successful projects encounter.

Raj Jaswa of TiE on Entrepreneurship

Raj Jaswa, president of The Indus Entrepreneurs, Silicon Valley chapter talks entrepreneurship in this interview. I was curious to find out about the early days in Silicon Valley (the late 1980s and early 1990s) when being an entrepreneur was not an easy task, especially if you were an immigrant. If you flashback to the early 1990s, getting VC money or going IPO was not an easy task.

Raj was one of a handful of entrepreneurs of Indian origin in the early 1990s involved with the successful founding and IPO of a start-up called OPTi. What creative means did he and his founders use to make their start-up OPTi a success? How and where did they market their chips when the U.S. market was dominated by Intel and AMD?

After Opti, Raj then became involved in another company called Selectica, which had one of the best IPO debuts during the dot-com boom. In 2000, Raj was named to Forbes’ list of “Top CEOs: Corporate America’s Most Powerful People.”

After two successful companies, Raj is now involved with TiE and in mentoring a new generation of entrepreneurs. I asked him if he would be interested in starting a new company. Tune in to find out what he has to say.

Silicon Valley Watcher: MyFabrik

Fabrik is an interesting Web 2.0 company because of its business strategy: it has combined a Web 2.0 consumer/small business service called MyFabrik, which organizes and stores digital media online — with physical storage such as hard drives and flash drives. This is a strategy that competitors will find hard to duplicate. The company recently raised $24.9 million in Series D funding. I spoke with Mike Cordano, CEO and co-founder, at the company’s offices in San Mateo, Calif.

GM’s Global Triplets

General Motors unveiled a trio of new Global Cars at the New York International Auto Show. Designed as urban commuter vehicles, these minicars originate from GM’s Korean design studios. Released under the Chevy brand, these three concept vehicles, Beat, Groove and Trax may or may not arrive on North American shores — it all depends on how consumers respond to them.
