In this video podcast straight from Intel’s Spring IDF in Shanghai, the spotlight is on the keynote demos that showed power and performance in newer, smaller and more innovative form factors, many powered by the Intel’s Atom processor. Many of the demonstrations focused on mobility, and they all provided an exciting look at some of the technologies that are just around the corner.

Dr. Ren Ng, president and CEO of Refocus Imaging, led a demo of his company’s light field cameras, which record the full light field as it enters the camera, ultimately extending the capabilities of conventional digital cameras and “turning camera hardware into software.” Ng explains that by doing this, light field cameras “bring the economics and power of Moore’s Law to the camera system.” (snapshots from their Web site illustrate the demo, which they re-created live, on stage at IDF!).

Also on hand was Dr. Mendel Rosenblum, co-founder and chief scientist at VMware. He shared the stage with Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, to demonstrate a flex migration across four generations of hardware as well as the value of the deep collaboration between Intel and VMware.

There was a live demo by Classmate PC, following the news-making announcement of the new, second generation classmate (”featuring a 9-inch LCD screen, 6-cell battery, 512MB memory, a 30GB hard disk drive and a built-in webcam“), the unveiling of Intel’s Tukwila Itanium processor (“Two billion transistors in one processor”), and a mobility-focused Asianux demoonstration of the breadth of Moblin Usage, including a new way to play video from the Web and a new way to order Chinese food.

A Montevina demo was noteworthy after Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Mobility Group, Dadi Perlmutter, revealed that Intel’s next generation mobile platform, Montevina, will provide twice the 3D processing power of any current integrated solution.

Demos showcasing Neusoft driver assistance, Fuwa robot, Adobe Air, Sobey real-time rendering and MID & mobile designs rounded out the event.

Join BearingPoint senior manager Kevin McClafferty to understand the importance of re-engineering the commercial lending process and how it can impact your organization. When you re-engineer the current process, you open your organization up to the benefits of efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and flexibility. In light of the recent credit crisis, it is essential to find ways to make an impact on the current system.

With all of the negative symptoms affecting both the consumer and credit lenders, we have reached a point where there isn’t a lot of capital left for lending. This has led to many mergers, but not a grasp on how to re-structure the current processes. Organizations are being pressured to reduce costs and manage risk. When you re-engineer the current process, you are basically consolidating all the processes into one solution. This solution must encompass the right technology and the right control. Most organizations do not have the capacity to handle this type of project on their own. They need assistance in determining what went wrong in the past and how they can rectify the current situation.

In order for a company to even consider making changes to their current systems, there are a few items that need to be addressed. An organization must develop a strategy for this change and ensure that everyone involved is on board. They must make a business case to rally support and they must educate their employees of all possible scenarios. A company must be ready for implementation and not underestimate the importance of change management. Only then will they be able to implement a new structure that will allow them to streamline their processes and welcome new products to market.

Welcome to the first video installment of our new “Dinner And A…” series. In this episode, we get a visit from Ryanne Hodson of RyanIsHungry, Jay Dedman of Momentshowing, and Eddie Codel of Geek Entertainment TV.

As this was our first attempt at capturing a dinner event in episodic format, I’m sure we missed a few details. That’s ok, the company was great and the food was spot on. Ryanne and Jay brought some fresh mixed greens from their backyard garden, along with a mystery squash that they had grown from seed. Eddie brought along an organic chardonnay that suited his Gary Vaynerchuk alter-ego just fine. Ryanne and Jay’s squash was destined to become a spiced squash soup, featuring the surprising combination of cinnamon and dill. And even I was surprised by the liveliness of their fresh greens. I’m still always struck by the difference between produce served minutes or hours after picking, rather than days or weeks.

The evening was filled with roving topics, like any good dinner party should be, though eventually we settled on cross-promotion and surviving in a new medium. Making a go of it in the world of online content is still a tremendous challenge; the industry at this point is still a sea of turbulent waters. Add to this the issues of unaffordable health care and fading social security, and the outlook could appear grim for long-term survival in the video blogging world. Young professionals in today’s work force, especially the increasing ranks of freelance professionals, are in for a potentially bumpy road. There are some real advantages to the transient work life that has evolved in modern America, such as greater flexibility to pursue interests and less likelihood of chronic boredom. However these perks in many lie on top of a shakey foundation. Dismal health coverage was unanimous among us, and at the current rate social security will be a thing of the past well before we’re likely to need it. Talk about a domestic threat – the office of homeland security needs to sic itself on reinstituting usury laws, reducing insurance premiums, and fighting labor loss and infrastructure deterioration in order for us to have a truly safe and stable country. There was a palpable patriotism to much of the evening’s discussion; despite the likelihood of choppy waters ahead, everyone present seemed interested and determined to make a positive change in their corner of the world.

In the end, we’re blessed enough to be doing what we have a passion for, making content, entertaining, trying to affect change. None of us are likely to switch jobs any time soon.

On the subject of passion, this Friday night the Freshtopia.net team, along with Ryanne and Jay, and Doctor Popular will be presenting at Eddie Codel’s Video Salon Redux . If you’re in San Francisco Friday night, consider stopping by and saying hello.

Happy Dinning,

Oracle Lease Management is a powerful data management tool that offers the user flexibility and the ability to be competitive in the marketplace. Designed for asset-based finance companies, OLM can increase productivity and manage the challenges that many users face from their old legacy systems. In past efforts to introduce OLM to the marketplace, there was a lot of hesitation around its effectiveness; companies not only feared changing platforms, but the time it took to implement the system.

Over the course of the past four years since it was first introduced, BearingPoint has taken many steps to streamline the process. By utilizing the newest technology, OLM serves as an effective tool that has configuration already built into it. BearingPoint provides a strategic plan to each client that demonstrates how OLM can deliver better results at a more cost-efficient price.

While in Ottawa this week, I had the chance to chat with Teknision’s Gabor Vida and Tony MacDonell in an empty conference room at the Ottawa Sheraton. Teknision works primarily in Flash-based technologies — Flash, Flex, and AIR — and serves as a good example of the “designer/developer” role that I’ve seen emerge over the past year as Ajax and RIA have gone mainstream.

Gabor and Tony explain what it means when they say they created “branded applications,” a concept that Teknision is well known for and and successful with. We then get into one of my favorite topics for small shops: how do you manage the ongoing relationship with clients, esp. pushy ones. On this topic, we talk about what I’d call “agile design,” or the way that agile software development ideas and practices can be applied to the design/developer process.

Check out their blog for more write-ups of the Teknision philosophy and practices.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. September 25, 2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. introduced its first quad-core x64 (x86, 64-bit) systems, including the world’s smallest four-socket x64 server — which delivers up to twice the expandability and compute power as other servers, yet is half the size. The Sun Fire X4450 and Sun Fire X4150 servers, powered by Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, enable customers to solve critical problems in the datacenter by offering more performance, higher density, and better power efficiency than competitive systems in the market today. Both servers also give customers a choice of operating systems, running the Solaris Operating System (OS), Windows, Linux or VMware, with the flexibility to deploy a broad range of applications.

John Fowler, Executive Vice President, heads the discussion and Q&A.

The series hybrid electric vehicle can be plugged in and charged to yield a 40-mile range and uses a 1.3L four cylinder diesel motor to charge the lithium ion battery pack.

Last week, I talked with Lauren Sell and Josh Dilworth of Porter Novelli Austin about doing PR for tech startups. My primary interest was figuring out what the day-to-day life of a tech PR person is, and to figure out and lessons learned. In this first part, we primarily talked about establishing trust and relationships with the press, helping being the eyes and ears for clients by keeping up with relevant news, and also how flexible plans for PR campaigns work with startups whose own plans change frequently.
