With quad core and 8-core muscle “under the hood,” gamers, developers, and graphics folks alike had a chance to see their games supercharged: faster rendering, MMOs running at ultimate speed, and easier exporting of element into game architecture.

For this video podcast, PodTech spoke with Peter De Lappe, of Softimage (also check out Softimage on the Road) on 3D game development graphics architecture, as well as Ethan Schur of TDVision, developers of Stereoscopic gaming headgear.

By the way, Intel’s smallest-ever processor will soon be given its brand name. This is the processor that Intel’s Denise Bohling says will bring an awesome Internet experience to small mobile devices. Check out her blog and share your guesses on the new brand name, which will be announced on March 3.

Now that GDC 2008 is behind us, and the reviews are really rolling in, PodTech takes a wide look at the gaming industry, with IDC gaming analyst Billy Pidgeon.

Gaming’s future likely includes more attention from the courts, as it continues to gain in mass popularity and questions continue to arise around “mature content” and children, for instance. And, as always, plenty of opinions about various consoles, PC vs. consoles, and the issue of game development from the developers’ perspective (the one-console future, for example).

Billy Pidgeon is the program manager for IDC’s consumer markets: gaming program. In this podcast, he speaks with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about the gaming industry, drawing important distinctions between gaming, which is a massive and growing business, and the more entrenched industries that are built around movies.

The stakes for gaming companies are higher in a way, says Pidgeon, because there are no second chances after a game flops at market (unlike the many, many secondary distribution paths that movies have). But as the industry grows, Pidgeon says, there’s a chance for the world to benefit, not only because of the truly international business that the gaming industry enjoys, but also because a broad interest in gaming might inspire a broader interest in technology and mathematics.

Offshore resources are a proven model, with the advantage of providing a higher level of work at a more cost efficient rate. Productivity has also evolved, with advancements in software development and cheaper resource data conversions. By providing domain and technical expertise in all GDC facilities, we are providing the right resources at the right place and at the right time.

Our senior managers all spend 3-6 months off shore in one of our GDC locations to fully understand the cultural differences and establish a means to work together. We have GDC locations in India, China, Europe and North America. By developing a close relationship between the regions and business communities, the engagement teams and clients develop a comfort level. This allows us to overcome any obstacles and work as a team towards any necessary improvements. What are being provided are not only low-priced measures, but high-value resources.

SAN JOSE, CA, March 22, 2006 (PodTech News) — Sony has announced that it will launch its highly anticipated PlayStation 3 video game console in November. The company says it expects the adoption rate of its newest products to exceed earlier versions of its consoles. The research firm In-Stat reported earlier this week that Sony would continue to control the video console market for the next four years.

“The production capacity for PlayStation 3 will ramp faster than PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 with over one million units per month,” said Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios in a keynote speech delivered at the Game Developer Conference. “The full spectrum of display devices will be supported from PAL, NTSC, standard definition, to full HD 1080 progressive.”

Here are excerpts from Phil Harrison’s keynote speech at the GDC.
