Join BearingPoint managing director Sandeep Vishnu as he explores risk strategies for market survival. With all the turmoil in the financial services space in recent weeks, everyone is wondering how we got into such a mess. What began as a contained subprime crisis has spilled over into all segments of the financial services industry, in what seems like a domino effect. In this podcast, we discuss the fundamental lack of risk transparency and risk governance as the two most important factors that led to this crisis and how companies can better prepare themselves for the future.

There are multiple lessons that can be learned from our current financial situation. Companies need to focus on transparency within their organization and develop a culture that is more risk sensitive so that risk governance takes on a more important role than it has in the past. We are learning that had senior management been aware of their data and level of risk, they might have seen what was emerging within their organization. To ensure we don’t ever see another crisis at this magnitude, companies need to instill a risk base culture that has a set shared of values among its employees. This doesn’t happen overnight, but there are steps that can be taken to head in that direction.

First and foremost, the data challenge needs to be made head on. If we’re going to eliminate this challenge in the future, we need to conquer this challenge now. The governance challenge needs to also be met. This is where BearingPoint can assist. We have developed numerous solutions to assist our clients with their current situations. We are putting a focus on what can be changed within a current organization. There are certain elements that if put into place now, can help institutions with their future struggles.

This podcast is the second in a series covering the basic design considerations that customers of all sizes should be mindful of as they begin to explore the many benefits of VDI. John Dodge takes a pragmatic, layered approach in working towards a framework in designing flexible, and scalable VDI deployments, as is discussed in this podcast. From Thin Clients, to PC’s, to connectivity and networks, to security, DMZ, and firewall considerations, to connection broker topology, then into the host, hypervisor, storage, operating system, and lastly application and user profile layer - all combine to provide a best practices model for elegantly designing new desktop architectures using VMware VDI and Thinapp.

Speakers:
J. Tyler Rohrer, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, VMware
John Dodge, Worldwide Release Engineer, VMware

Cemaphore Systems’ MailShadow for Google Apps keeps your Microsoft Outlook environment in sync with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Gmail Contacts. Make a change in one, and the other is instantly updated to reflect the change. MailShadow for Google Apps is receiving a lot of attention since organizations can eliminate the expensive infrastructure, hardware, and co-location facilities required by Exchange, but still allow users to leverage the client-side productivity features in Outlook.

Tracy Scott, the VP of Marketing at Cemaphore, shows the beta version of MailShadow for Google Apps to Brad Baldwin from Rocky Mountain Voices. And if you’re interested in giving it a try, the beta sign-up is still open.

Join BearingPoint director Larry Manno to explore enterprise business intelligence (BI) strategies and the opportunities it presents to an organization. Many organizations recognize the opportunity to capture performance benefits through the use of BI tools. Increasingly, they are turning to BI as the means to transform their raw data into actionable information for competitive advantage. However, every organization faces unique challenges in defining their BI vision and executing on it. Even within information-intensive industries such as financial services, there is much opportunity for improvement.

Businesses are often architected for the transaction state, not the information state. Even organizations that achieve some level of maturity in their use of BI tools cannot stand idle. Because the financial services industry is facing a business environment characterized by a sustained demand for performance in the midst of such a versatile marketplace, they must improve their risk management and transparency. The market will continue to change rapidly, therefore organizations must think strategically and act pragmatically. Exciting developments in BI are opening the door to dramatic improvement in business performance. Organizations can effectively capitalize on the opportunities by taking a strategic approach to enterprise BI. BearingPoint believes that organizations can be effective by matching needs to mature technology enablers on a just-in-time basis and executing incrementally against a time-based road map. This approach is practical for organizations regardless of where they are on the BI maturity continuum. We also believe the ability to execute BI within a business-oriented vision and a broader enterprise information management framework remains a differentiator.

It started with an innocuous audio interview with the then-President of the Products and Technology Group at SAP AG, Shai Agassi. Then came Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz, sitting at a table with an umbrella. It wasn’t long before Scoble introduced us to Thomas Hawk (investment advisor by day, ubiquitous digital media creator by night). There was the Golden Gate Bridge walk (spread over three parts!), and then came pumpkins — lots of pumpkins. Somewhere between the Golden Gate Bridge and the pumpkin patch, conversations with entrepreneurs like b5media Founder and President Jeremy Wright and SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill.

There was lunch with Bill Gates and another lunch with Mark Cuban. We met folks from Salesforce and Zillow, SocialText, Retrevo and Maxthon. We met political bloggers and a presidential candidate on the campaign trail.

But one of our favorites? It’s an interview with Microsoft’s Gary Flake on Photosynth.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Robert Scoble is still the author of the incredibly popular tech geek blog, Scobleizer.com. He’s also the managing director over at FastCompany.tv, where ScobleShow editor and producer Rocky Barbanica is also now a senior producer.

Since that fateful first ScobleShow, Agassi has moved on to found Project Better Place, in order to pursue interests in alternative energy and climate change. Jonathan Schwartz is still at Sun, still blogging, and lots of the start-ups we met are still kicking around, some of them very successfully! It’s worth taking a few minutes to surf through the archives, or just wait to see what pops up in the Classic feed. Good for a few goofy laughs and a little insight into where we’ve been and where we might be going. Oh, and Thomas Hawk is still evangelizing for photo sharing and digital media, and still believes that the best pictures in the world have yet to be taken.
