In this video podcast straight from Intel’s Spring IDF in Shanghai, the spotlight is on the keynote demos that showed power and performance in newer, smaller and more innovative form factors, many powered by the Intel’s Atom processor. Many of the demonstrations focused on mobility, and they all provided an exciting look at some of the technologies that are just around the corner.

Dr. Ren Ng, president and CEO of Refocus Imaging, led a demo of his company’s light field cameras, which record the full light field as it enters the camera, ultimately extending the capabilities of conventional digital cameras and “turning camera hardware into software.” Ng explains that by doing this, light field cameras “bring the economics and power of Moore’s Law to the camera system.” (snapshots from their Web site illustrate the demo, which they re-created live, on stage at IDF!).

Also on hand was Dr. Mendel Rosenblum, co-founder and chief scientist at VMware. He shared the stage with Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, to demonstrate a flex migration across four generations of hardware as well as the value of the deep collaboration between Intel and VMware.

There was a live demo by Classmate PC, following the news-making announcement of the new, second generation classmate (”featuring a 9-inch LCD screen, 6-cell battery, 512MB memory, a 30GB hard disk drive and a built-in webcam“), the unveiling of Intel’s Tukwila Itanium processor (“Two billion transistors in one processor”), and a mobility-focused Asianux demoonstration of the breadth of Moblin Usage, including a new way to play video from the Web and a new way to order Chinese food.

A Montevina demo was noteworthy after Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Mobility Group, Dadi Perlmutter, revealed that Intel’s next generation mobile platform, Montevina, will provide twice the 3D processing power of any current integrated solution.

Demos showcasing Neusoft driver assistance, Fuwa robot, Adobe Air, Sobey real-time rendering and MID & mobile designs rounded out the event.

Broadband connectivity is rapidly becoming a bottleneck issue for economic development around the world. As nations move into knowledge-based economies, an emphasis on information and communication technologies, or ICTs, is critical to addressing poverty and development concerns ranging from health and education to economic and industrial growth. Knowledge is the driving engine for economic growth, social development, cultural enrichment, and for political empowerment, according to Abdul Waheed Kahn, assistant director-general for communication and information at UNESCO. In this video podcast, he makes the case that enabling a knowledge workforce increasingly requires reliable access to information. As Intel’s John Davies explains, more and more, that means bringing broadband to parts of the world where even basic economic development remains a challenge. IICD Communication Coordinator Hilde Eugelink explains how even simple, relatively small investments in education can have a significant impact on communities and economies.

Hilde Eugelink is communication coordinator with the International Institute for Communication and Development and John Davies is vice president of Intel’s sales and marketing group and the general manager of Intel’s World Ahead initiative.

Intel’s smallest processor to date, built with it’s tiny 45nm transistors for a new wave of small, mobile Internet devices. The chip gets the name Intel Atom. There’s also Intel Centrino Atom, a combination of chip technologies for low cost, low power and high performing devices designed to bring better Internet experiences to wireless compute devices.

Intel’s Brian Fravel helped to announce Atom’s brand name on Sunday, followed by Bob Duffy and others. Outside of Intel, conversation continues. Most blog mentions highlight the tiny processor’s likeley impact on mobile internet devices. As Joel Hruska writes at Ars Technica, “The Atom architecture is intended to give Intel a foothold in handheld devices that have traditionally been the sole domain of very low-power RISC processors.” Noting that no Atom-enabled products have yet been announced, Yahoo! Tech’s Christopher Null predicts that “you should definitely expect some in the next few months.”

Gordon E. Moore, Intel retired chairman and CEO (and chairman emeritus of the board) spoke with Moira Gunn onstage at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, in an interview that Intel called a “fireside chat.”

In this segment, find out whether or not you owe your workplace set-up to Moore and Intel (hint: you probably do). Also, was “Intel” ever the hame of a motel company in the Midwest?

The conversation covered a full career, from a time before semiconductors, when the very notion of integrated circuits was new — and controversial. Since then, of course, not only has Moore been on the winning side of the technology, but his name has become synomymous with the notion that the technology of the chip is on an aggressive development track — “Moore’s Law” has guided and challenged the chip industry for more than 30 years. (Asked if he regrets that name, he says, “I guess I don’t - now.”)

An End to Moore’s Law?
Every year sees speculation about a possible end to Moore’s Law. What does Moore, himself say (this year)? The answer is in this podcast. The physical world is subject to limiting factors, and Moore predicts that sometime in the foreseeable future, limits will be reached in the business of chip-making. However, Moore says he’s still impressed at how well the industry has extended the technologies, so far.

Moore easily recalls a time before the name Silicon Valley applied to the high-tech corridor south of San Francisco, but he was also remembers a time before the now-ubiquitous staple of office life worldwide. Cubicles. You may not like your cubicle much, but according to Moore, they came about in an attempt to keep the office from looking like a prison. Besides, he says, he still has the biggest cubicle at Intel.

Gordon Moore co-founded Intel in 1968.

Join BearingPoint manager and technologist Zahra Rahemtulla, as she presents a case for use cases and their role as an effective vehicle to map out activities an IT organization should put in place for a proactive approach to service delivery.

Productization is a means of helping an organization to think about its IT products and services, and how they could be packaged to offer and sell to end users. It’s about providing a bundled service that delivers business value to the end users.

Transforming the thinking and IT operations is a cultural shift that requires a new mindset. The use cases help organizations see on paper how it would work, because they represent a real life scenario that depicts how a service should behave in a future state (not just the ideal state). They help show minimum requirements to help deliver and support the service.

After rowing across the Atlantic in 2006, Roz Savage is leaving San Francisco (her Website has updated departure dates) to conquer her next ocean: the Pacific.

Roz’s rowing vessel is fully self-sustained. During this two-plus months adventure, a total of 6 sonar panels and a wind turbine will provide power for her desalination system, her communications system, computer system and various miscellaneous systems including her iPod and on board soundsystem. We have added a few more gadgets: data loggers that will show us how much energy Roz’s system is generating each day. The Roz Savage page on Smart Energy publishes this data and predicts future generation based on the weather forecast.

I talked to Roz prior to her departure about her ambitions and day-to-day life on the vessel.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
This is Rio Pesino for Podtech.net, I am here with Steve Taber who is the Chairman and CEO of Nordic Windpower, welcome to the Podcast.

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
Thank you Rio very much, it’s a great pleasure.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Steve, first question, go and tell our listeners what your company is, and what do they do, what’s your company all about?

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
We are a wind-turbine manufacturing company, we manufacture turbines based on a very innovative Swedish technology, and what is innovative about this technology is that the equipment is simple and reliable and low in cost. If you think of our competitors as being Ferraris we are a Volvo. We may not be the sexiest machine, but we are absolutely predictable and reliable. We give years and years of trouble free operation with minimum maintenance and low cost.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Now, what makes your product different than your competitors?

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
The main design which our competitors have followed is a rigid massive design, which is very heavy. It’s over engineered, it’s very heavy and it responds rigidly to the wind. Our design is designed to be flexible, so that it flexes with the wind. So, eccentric forces from turbulence are dissipated harmlessly, so that the turbine itself can be operated in a very low stress environment. That saves us weight, it saves us failures, maintenance problems and ultimately gives us a bottom line cost that is anywhere from 10% to 30%.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Now, I noticed your Windpower system has two blades as opposed to three?

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
Well, two blades have a number of advantages. It saves weight; it makes the design much more elegant in its ability to respond flexibly and passively to the wind. Like I say, the three-bladed turbine is a rigid design, it’s kind of like an ocean liner, the two-bladed design is kind of like a sail boat. It goes with the wind rather than fighting against the wind.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
What’s your existing customer base?

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
The existing customer base right now is entirely in Sweden and of Swedish utilities. What we’re doing with this company is introducing the technology to the United States and here our customers will be the established Wind power developers in utilities and the community energy movement. There’s a great deal of growth right now in that sector of the industry in the United States. Communities, farmers, school districts, small towns, Swedish districts and things like that, they’re all trying to put or many of them are trying to put up a few turbines, one, two or three turbines where they can use it as a revenue source to help their basic bottom line.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Now, what are the some of the challenges you guys are facing bring your product here to the United States, if any?

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
Well, the first challenge and the challenge which brings me here today to the Cleantech Forum is the challenge of having enough money. We don’t personally have enough money to fund this, we need about $10 million on our Balance Sheet in order to get our company up and running and sustain our growth curve, so that’s challenge number one. We are confident, we will solve that challenge because right now renewable energy is such a high growth industry that there’re a lot of real smart investors that are trying to get in it, so I’m confident we’ll get over that.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Now in regards to Cleantech, what are your thoughts on this event overall?

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
I am hugely impressed; this is a Cracker Jack organization. I mean at this organization, one of the very smart things they do is that they invite all their investors but they screen the entrepreneurs very carefully so there’s only a handful of companies here in comparison to several hundred investors. So, that I think makes for an environment in which the investors don’t feel beleaguered and in which the companies that do, that are fortunate enough to be selected to come, can have a courteous reception from anybody I’ve talked to. I really admire this organization, my hat is off to Nick and Loren and everybody to put this together.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Steve, I appreciate the Podcast, thanks a lot for the time, and goodbye.

Steve Taber - Nordic Windpower
Thank you; it’s been a great pleasure.

Rio Pesino - PodTech
Alright.

Lee Gibbons talks about how Podango plays in the space by offering a content distribution platform. He shares his vision on where the future of content delivery is going, and he predicts a future where all content, not just the “hits,” will be able to find an audience big enough to support creative and delivery. With the explosion of user-generated content, the power of RSS subscription and delivery, and cheap storage, Podango provides a podcasting and videocasting service that allows anyone to be a station director.

Unlike a standard hosting services, Podango allows station directors to stake their claim and then use their passion and expertise to create, collect, manage and publish channels. Podango also takes care of the tech confusion of RSS feed subscription for various systems like iTunes.

Podango’s business model is to monetize channels with advertisers seeking to reach specific audiences. The cool thing is that Podango shares a good chunk of the revenue with the station director. Still in beta, Podango is currently adding stations quickly.

The Consumer Electronics Association predicts that video games will bring in more than $12 billion dollars this year. In this podcast, CEA’s Sean Wargo talks with PodTech’s Rio Pesino about the growth of the industry, the impact next-gen consoles will have on the gaming market and comments on the Yankee Group’s prediction that the Sony Playstation 3 will win the console war.

Reporter’s Notes: The fact that videogames have become a billion dollar industry is no surprise. Sean Wargo’s prediction that the PS3 will win the next-gen console war came as something of a shock to me. Sure, Sony has a huge market share right now, but with Microsoft’s early release of its Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s expected cheap price tag on the Wii, I can see Sony losing a lot of gamers. The PS3’s expensive price tag and inclusion of Blu-Ray is also a risk. Gamespot has an in-depth interview with Sony Computer Entertainment American President Kaz Hirai.

In other CEA-related news, I got a chance to speak with CEA Communications Director Tara Dunion about the scaling down of the E3 Expo and the company’s thoughts on perhaps creating a West Coast venue to replace E3.
