In this video podcast, we travel to Austin, Texas and the SxSW Interactive festival, to focus on what’s inside people’s computers, and just how much they’re relying on those computers for work, communication and - all-important at the SxSW Festival — creativity.

Intel’s Bryan Rhoads took the opportunity to blog from the conference using a MID. He used the mobile Internet device to bring his blog readers along with him to breakfast, and to snap a picture of two of Intel’s tiniest products - the Atom processor and the silicon core of an Intel Core 2 Duo.

We showed those tiny products to attendees at SxSWi, and found out how some creative folks are interacting with their computers (and what’s inside).

Intel’s smallest processor to date, built with it’s tiny 45nm transistors for a new wave of small, mobile Internet devices. The chip gets the name Intel Atom. There’s also Intel Centrino Atom, a combination of chip technologies for low cost, low power and high performing devices designed to bring better Internet experiences to wireless compute devices.

Intel’s Brian Fravel helped to announce Atom’s brand name on Sunday, followed by Bob Duffy and others. Outside of Intel, conversation continues. Most blog mentions highlight the tiny processor’s likeley impact on mobile internet devices. As Joel Hruska writes at Ars Technica, “The Atom architecture is intended to give Intel a foothold in handheld devices that have traditionally been the sole domain of very low-power RISC processors.” Noting that no Atom-enabled products have yet been announced, Yahoo! Tech’s Christopher Null predicts that “you should definitely expect some in the next few months.”

Intel has released its newest Centrino technologies for notebook computers. The company says the new hardware and software platform has improved processor and graphics performance, wireless connectivity, battery life, startup and loading time, as well as enhanced security and machine management for IT departments.

The new technologies are Centrino Duo, for consumer machines, and the Centrino Pro, for business notebooks. The release of the new laptop technologies comes four years after Intel first launched the platform that made wireless connectivity and mobility a standard characteristic of notebook computers. “It really was a tipping point,” said Karen Regis, a manager in Intel’s Mobile Platform Marketing Group. “It really became the new norm. People expect to be able to sit on their couch and be on the Internet.”

“Now, what we’re doing is we’re just raising the bar on ourselves with what people can do with that wireless,” she added. Regis says the new technology allows people to use their laptops at home or in business in ways that are more seamless. “Once you have that kind of throughput, coverage and reliability, you can start doing interesting things like high definition content.” The rise of Internet-delivered video is one of the factors in the design of new Centrino technologies. Both the Centrino Duo and Pro technologies are based on Core2Duo chips.

Centrino Pro laptops are designed to work within Intel’s vPro environment where I.T. departments can more easily manage fleets of PCs and stay on top of security issues.

PodTech.net’s Michael Johnson investigates the changing landscape of the home, thanks to Intel’s Core2Duo dual core processors, and the next generation of Core2Extreme and Core2Quad, featuring four compute engines on one chip, which is ramping up the possibilities of digital life from downloading and recording viral videos from YouTube to wireless networking of the home to accessing movies on demand. Intel is at the forefront of revolutionizing the way we live, the way we communicate, and the way we entertain each other, through social media interactions to our family lives. It is a new world with ever increasing mobility, speed and efficiency. Who would have thought that such a tiny chip could hold so much power? Intel did.

Transcript:
Host: Michael Johnson - PodTech
Guest: David Marsiglia - Intel
Guest: Merlin Kister – Intel

Michael Johnson - PodTech
I’m Michael Jones and we’re here at the Intel booth at CES International. And we’re with David Marsiglia from Intel. Hey Dave it’s great to have you here.

David Marsiglia - Intel
Hey, thank you very much.

Michael Johnson - PodTech
Tell us a little bit about what we are looking up behind us. Talk about recording Web video and using — really utilizing the power of the Core 3 Duo processor?

David Marsiglia – Intel
Exactly. Yeah this is one of the many demos that we’re actually showing here today, that really utilizes our — not only our Core 2 Duo processor, but really incapsulates, it incapsulates our whole Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology as a whole. When you see these videos they are great to see, but that’s really all you can do is, just view them online. What you can’t do, is download them, because these are streaming videos. Until now that is. We’ve actually worked with a company called (Inaudible) which actually optimize to really excel on a Core 2 Duo Processor, part of our Centrino Duo platform.

So, what this software enables you to do, this is the user interface that we have here, which really is built upon the Firefox browsers, and then they’ve actually incorporated their own engine and filling system in it as well. What you do is, utilizing their software you can go on YouTube, Google videos, or really anywhere that has unprotected streaming video, you can actually simply click record button and start recording, not only the video, but that entire page and for you to view off line and really take your videos with you on the go. So, you could be on an airplane and watch all those favorite videos here that you have recorded and just watch them anytime you want.

Michael Johnson - PodTech
We’re here with Merlin Kister of Intel. Merlin, tell me a little bit about what we’re looking at?

Merlin Kister - Intel
Well this is the newest technology coming this year is the ability to communicate between your PC and your TV set, to be able to enjoy all of the content, your movies, your music, photos and even some new services that are accessed and available on your PC on big-screen TVs. The Core 2 Duo makes the small form factors possible. We give you a high performance processor that’s very energy efficient, allows you to view that stream that content over to connect to electronic devices like this brand new Sharp TV.

Michael Johnson - PodTech
I know that we have talked before, like digital life or the (Inaudible) club and there’s a lot of fascinating things here. This has really taken things through the whole newsstand.

Merlin Kister – Intel
Exactly, exactly. We’re seeing this convergence has with other technologies; so no longer will you have islands of content. So, consumers will be able to access - don’t have to worry about, “Well is that music file or is that located on my PC, or is it on my iPod?” Now, with these new types of electronics they can communicate with each other, consumers can get access to really their favorite media on the device and screen up their choice.

Michael Johnson — PodTech
Merlin Kister from Intel thanks for showing me this great stuff. I’m not quite there with my TV set yet.

Merlin Kister - Intel
Well it’s a great one to upgrade to.

Michael Johnson - PodTech
I know that it’s coming so, thanks for showing us.

Merlin Kister - Intel
Thank you.

Intel says its Ultra Mobile PC is designed to give users full PC capability in places where a laptop is too big or clunky. How about in a car? A project with Volkswagen looks fairly promising. It would provide three users with access to three screens installed in the front dash, and on the backs of the front seats. The system is still in concept mode. One tip: don’t tell an engineer his car is “pimped out.” Jason Lopez talks with Dan Monihan, from Intel’s Ultra Mobile Group; Parag Jain, - senior project engineer for the connectivity and computing electronic research laboratory at Volkswagen of America; and Damien Stolarz - chief technology officer of MP3Car.com, the developer of the StreetDeck car PC software.
