What would your response be to this scenario: you’re watching television and you forget that it’s being distributed to you on the Internet. Who won? TV or the Web? James McQuivey covers television and media technologies for Forrester Research. He spoke with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about the current state of affairs for this audio podcast.

Friday’s announcement from Yahoo! Video touted a “wider viewing experience,” in addition to more content, bigger files and more sharing opportunities. And then there are those who ask whether another user-generated video site is what we really need.

Then there’s Apple TV Take Two. Steve Jobs and Apple continue to suggest that integration, convergence and usability might help consumers make the switch from TV as they know it to greater reliance on broadband and computing for downloadable video (including movie rentals).

Regardless of where things will ultimately end up, TV set sales are still big business (you may have seen coverage recently suggesting that men would still make considerable sacrifices in order to get a 50-inch TV display. We might as well ask: what would you be willing to give up for a big TV?

Jeremy Mehrle has turned the basement of his suburban St. Louis home into one of the coolest private computer museums you will ever see. He has 74 vintage Apple Macintosh computers impeccably displayed. All of them are fully-functional so you can see what the old operating systems were like. Some of the highlights of his collection are an Apple Lisa, a 20th Anniversary Macintosh, and a NeXT computer.

This is not the first time his collection has been seen on the Web. After he first posted photos of it on his Flickr account, the collection was seen on several prominent blogs and social networking sites, including the front page of Digg (twice!), Macworld, Mac Life, and Engadget. But Podtech and LO-FI SAINT LOUIS are proud to bring the first video look at this amazing collection — amazing not for its size but the loving care Jeremy took in displaying these machines. Thanks to Walkie Talkie USA for providing the great Bowiesque soundtrack for this video.

Also there’s a bit of tech satire at the end of this video that you might enjoy — it’s from the sketch comedy group Flapping Crane. Special thanks to them for permission to use their clip.

SAN FRANCISCO, January 20, 2007 (PodTech News) — It’s been a quiet week compared to the double whammy earlier this month that saw dueling trade shows — Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and MacWorld in San Francisco. MacWorld, which saw Apple’s formal introduction of its iPhone, stole a lot of the thunder from the annual Las Vegas electronics ritual, but as the initial rapturous iPhone-mania begins to subside, some tech pundits are taking a second, less effusive stance on the three-services-in-one iPhone. Pundits are also continuing to have a go at Sony’s PS3, asking if, this time around, the new gaming device might have missed the mark…. In all things social media, it’s time to follow the money. While Silicon Valley searches for the perfect way to harness online communities for profit and scalability, some business are using social media to drive investor revenue — welcome to social investing. It’s PodTech News.

SAN FRANCISCO, January 4, 2007 (PodTech News) — As MacWorld approaches, it’s time to take stock of the rumors that have been building up. There are a few worth noting, though some Apple-watchers are impressed with the company’s improved ability to keep the lid on announcements until they want us to know about them. In other Apple news, a so-called “month of Apple bugs” has begun. The project made headlines yesterday with a Quicktime weakness you might want to know a little more about. Also in the news, a Bluetooth patent lawsuit, Blockbuster reaches a milestone subscriber goal, and a very rosy target prediction for Google share price.

Wired has a story today questioning if Steve Jobs has lost his edge? Steve Jobs is the main player in tech and media period. Google is gunning for Apple with their latest announcements as a sign of things to come. With iTunes and the lastest series of great products Apple is redefining the world tech culture. His keynotes have not mellowed at MacWorld but seemed a bit mellow for the developer conference yesterday.

Here is a video of Steve in 1984 introducing the Mac. The only difference in my opinion is that he has less hair now.

PodTech News was there yesterday livepodcasting and have posted a series of podcasts summaries and photos sets here, here, and here. Scott Beale may have some photos at his site.

Apple continues to be a popular cultural company. For example at PodTech our “Apple Voices” podcast series is currently #1 on iTunes under the Business category.

This story should generate an active conversation within the Apple fan base and hard core community members.

Business at Macworld is directly connected to cover up, of iPods. On this edition of PodTech News we talk with entrepreneurs new and old who hope to ride the retail wave in the wake of Apple’s successful mobile digital device.

More than one fifth of the businesses at Mac world 2006 in San Francisco display products that in one way or the other are connected to the iPod. With Apple selling 32 million units in 2005 alone many see a huge market in dressing and accessorizing the players.
PodTech News spoke with a few of the exhibitors on the show floor to find how they would be lining up for a slice of iPod pie.

Steve Jobs Keynote at MacWorld. PodTech News on the scene records Steve Jobs as he highlights the Macworld’s newest and brightest unveilings. In his normal command of the audience he unveiled many new initiatives. Most impressive were the Intel relationship and new MacBook Pro. Here is the podcast of Steve Jobs keynote. Other blogging coverage is on engadget.

The biggest news this year, of course, is we announced that we were going to shift to using Intel processors in Macs. We are going to put an Intel processor inside an iMac. We’re going to offer it in the same sizes, 17 and 20-inch. We’re going to offer it in the same award winning design. We’re going to offer it with the same features. We’re going to offer it for the same prices. So what’s different? We are building in … the new Intel Core Duo. Each of these processors is faster than the G5, and there’s two of ‘em. Chart of specs: SPECint_rate2000 of 32.6, that’s 3.2x faster than old iMac. SPECfp_rate2000: 27.1 for a 2.1x boost. Every iMac has now got dual processors. In refering to the Intel processors inside the new Apple Macs a new ad campaigns main them is…” It’s been trapped inside PCs. Dutifully performing dull little tasks…”

Today we are introducing … the MacBook Pro. It’s a new name because we’re kind of done with power, and we want the Mac name in our products. The same dual-processor as the iMac in every model. This is hard to believe: 4-5x faster than the PowerBook G5. These things are screamers.”

One inch thin, 5.6 pounds. Backlit keyboard with ambient light sensor, scrolling trackpad, sudden motion sensor. DVI video out for 30-inch monitors. $1999 1.67 Code Duo, 512 MB RAM, 80GB, 4x superdrive, Aiprort Extreme. $2499 for faster model.

Today, we’re introducing the next revision, iLife ‘06, and it’s a giant release.”

“Something incredibly new: Photocasting. This is Podcasting for photos.”It works through .Mac. You can set a password. “Whenever there’s a change, those changes will get downloaded right into their subscription album. They can make their cards with them, they can set their desktop pictures with them… We use industry standard RSS, so anyone can subscribe - you don’t even need a Mac.”

“Next up is iMovie. Last year we added HD, and boy was that a good idea .. the prices of cameras are continuing to drop. For this year we’re adding somtehing called Animated Themes. I’ll just show you.” More important: Export to iPod, Video Podcasts.

“So, we built a website in a few minutes here that’s got four pages, my photo album, podcasts, and my blog … this is what iWeb is about.. Rich media to share with all of your family.” Same $79 price as before. “In addition we have a $99 family pack that lets you put it onto 5 computers.

Increasingly, we want to share (things) over the Internet … increasingly, a lot of us want to build a web site. So today we are introducing a sixth app into the iLife suite to let us do exactly that. To share photos … video podcasts … music … blogs … we call this new app iWeb.”

“Garage Band: We have added a podcast authoring studio.” It has: Artwork track, 200 royalty-free sound effects, 100 jingles, automatic ducking (?) for audio, and a speech enhancer.” You can use iChat for remote interviews. Steve’s going to create a podcast. “Hi, I’m Steve and welcome to my weekly podcast, Super-secret Apple Rumors.” (huge laughs) “I have some pretty good sources inside Apple, and the next iPod is going to be HUGE, like 8 pounds … See you next week.”

“Next up, iDVD. We’ve added Widescreen Menus now .. enough of us have widescreen TVs. We’ve got something new called Magic iDVD.”

It’s apple’s anniverary, “30 years making the best personal computers in the world.”
