Verizon Business Leverages IP to Link First Responders During Times of Crisis

Emergency management personnel require seamless communications during times of crisis to rapidly coordinate assessment of and response to natural disasters and man-made events. Up until now, direct communications between federal, state and local first responders has been challenging due to disparate, and often, incompatible systems. Chuck Vick, manager of emergency communications product marketing for Verizon Business, discuses a new service, Verizon Communications Interoperability Solution, which integrates legacy radio, voice, data and wireless networks via Internet protocol (IP) to enable instant communications among public safety organizations, regardless of legacy infrastructure. Verizon Business is the first North American service provider to offer this service, which is based on the Cisco IP Interoperability and Communications System (IPICS).

Not being social enough is a big problem for corporations trying to use social media. That’s what Jeremiah Owyang and his team at Forrester discovered in a new report. Forrester selected 16 firms across four industries and found only one company worthy of accolades. What makes BMW a social marketing winner? In part, it’s that the automobile manufacturer managed to avoid the most common pitfalls, which is still where most firms fell short. Some examples of those easy-to-make mistakes: creating marketing programs that aren’t self-fueling, that don’t encourage members to participate in conversations amongst themselves and that don’t include some amount of participation from the corporation, itself.

This Podcast covers the basic requirements customers of all sizes should consider in begging to look at alternative ways to architect their desktop populations. As we like to say, the desktop is no longer a NOUN, or a singular physical asset that we provision and deploy to end users, waiting for it or its software components to break then fix. The Desktop is in fact a VERB, it is something you do, it is really a workspace where computers, applications, and users converge so they can do the jobs we assign to them. VMware Enterprise Desktop solutions, including VDI and Thinapp allow us to do just that. However, any successful deployment hinges on a successful assessment of what your users need, today, to “desktop”.

Intel’s invitation-only event at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., showed off the company’s diverse research projects in areas like visual computing, health, life sciences, green-friendly technologies, and wireless, to name a few. “Intel scientists can propose research on any topic they envision a solution for,” said Manny Vara, Intel’s technology marketing director at Intel’s R&D Labs. “It can start when a scientist comes across a problem, even outside of work, and says, ‘Hey, I could do something about that.’” Intel scientists have engaged in diverse research projects from digital money to mobile antennas that provide access to cell phone services in developing regions of the world. This year’s Research@Intel Day featured more than 70 projects.
