Six Apart just released a new Moveable Type, so I wanted to find out what was up cause it really has a lot of great services that help people communicate. From LiveJournal, which is used by people to talk with their social networks, to Vox, which is a blog tool with great permission control so you can publish to just your family or to your friends, or everyone if you want, to TypePad, which is the service we used to publish our book, Naked Conversations, on, to Moveable Type which is used inside lots of companies as a blog platform. Anyway, this chat with Chris Alden, CEO, Michael Sippey, VP of Products, and David Recordon, engineer, goes into a lot of depth on what Six Apart is thinking about when it comes to blogging and social networking.

If having some citizen journalists on the bus will give alternative coverage to the relationship between the traditional media and candidates, then it is a welcome change, right?

If having some citizen journalists on the bus will give alternative coverage to the relationship between the traditional media and candidates, then it is a welcome change, right?

Not necessarily.

The early questions over who was paying for Robert Scoble’s meals were a roundabout way of asking what kind of relationship the social media folks on that private Edwards campaign jet would be building with the candidate.

It’s still a good question. PodTech’s paying for the bulk of Robert’s trip, and Robert’s not actually going to wade too deeply into the politics of it all, if that’s possible, at least according to his posts so far

But he’s not the only one out there with a camera and a Web site. And there are some good questions about what it means to be asked by a candidate to take video and then post it to YouTube on behalf of the candidate.

Or onto the candidate’s official Web site, for that matter.

It’s the kind of work a high-priced production team would do, along with a PR firm. But they’d be called consultants, and they’d probably be based in a place like Washington, DC and New York City.

So maybe the media landscape is changing, but not as much as we thought.

Maybe it’s going to hit the consultants hardest.

While low-cost online alternatives step into the breach, fumbling with their light-meters and autofocus, asking softball questions and giving us a poor substitute for news, the good news is written all over the papers.

Because social media might not end up being a replacement for the traditional news media, even if it does become part of the political process. It might just be a replacement for Madison Avenue and Washington consultants.

Just to be clear, though, Robert isn’t shilling for Edwards. I’m pretty sure that he’d be just as happy to tag along on a McCain bus, or a Romney bus — or pretty much any candidate’s bus — if they were making a serious effort to bring social media into the campaign process.

You only have to read the dustjacket of Naked Conversations to understand that there are people out there — Robert chief among them — who believe that <a href=http://www.podtech.net/news/technology/1245/scoble-and-blogging-on-the-campaign-trail">a shift like that would be significant, even if only because it turns citizen journalists into citizen PR firms.

It’s about technology and society — not politics. And it’s a start.

I have spent more than two decades in technology marketing and have always been a big believer in candor and transparency with the “market”. As a General Manager at Regis McKenna in the 1980s and then later as a Marketing Partner of venture capital firm, Mayfield, I was instrumental in getting these firms to convince clients and/or portfolio companies to conduct surveys of their markets — one-on-one conversations with influential customers, prospects, lost customers, analysts, and developers — about their perceptions of the company, market, business strategy, technology, product(s) and the like. These studies provided the transparency needed that allowed companies to get some idea of what their customers or other influential members of their marketplace were thinking. They were powerful marketing benchmarks for a view into the marketplace and normally provided the foundation to build a more strategic marketing plan.

The surveys took a long time — sometimes three months — because they were one-on-one conversations by phone or in person with more than 40 people. These conversations tapped into perceptions and were incredibly insightful. Much work went into summarizing and analyzing these conversations and essentially “measuring” their thoughts so that these perceptions could be used to drive marketing and communications strategies for the company.

For corporations today, blogs can provide the same benefit, but are a much more efficient means of communication. Take for example how Bob Lutz of General Motors is using his Fast Lane blog, where now more than 10,000 customers have responded with comments, rebuttals and criticisms of GM. This would have been the same type of data I would have gleaned from the perceptual studies at Regis McKenna or Mayfield, but the information is now available in real-time. Even better — it is totally uncensored. From what I have read, Lutz thinks this input has been enormously valuable and has driven corporate product development strategy.

Blogs have other uses in corporate marketing as well; they are effective in establishing thought leadership, building deeper communities and creating stronger customer relations. Given my belief that a blog should be used as in corporate marketing, I discovered a newly published book called The Corporate Blogging Book by Debbie Weil that is very provocative. It is a must read for anyone who is interested in learning more about how companies are using blogs today. As the host of the Marketing Voices™ for PodTech, I interviewed Debbie Weil on her book. In the podcast, we discussed what the best ways are for a company to use a corporate blog, what companies are stellar examples of corporate blogging, how companies should think of ROI as a return on influence rather than a return on investment — an acronym that has new meaning for me as I reconfigured it — and finally delved into the potential challenges of using blogging as a corporate marketing strategy. Blogs are wonderful at providing the necessary transparency to a marketplace’s perceptions — a true “naked conversation” — to quote my PodTech colleague, Robert Scoble, soon to launch his own show on PodTech as well. The Marketing Voices podcast and Debbie’s book are helpful for those seeking more information on how to view blogging’s power for marketing purposes. Listen to it and let me know what you think!

MENLO PARK, CA. (June 12, 2006) — PodTech.Network, Inc., a leading emerging- media company today announced that Robert Scoble, well-known Microsoft evangelist, world-renowned blogger and Microsoft’s first videoblogger, is joining the company as Vice President of Media Development. At Microsoft, Scoble maintained the popular blog, Scobleizer (scobleizer.com) which is currently listed in the top 10 blogs on Technorati, the most-popular blog search engine. Scoble, an author, recently completed the now best-selling book, “Naked Conversations: How Blogs Are Changing the Way Businesses Talk With Customers.”

“Robert Scoble is a global brand and we are thrilled to have him as a member of the PodTech team,” said John Furrier, founder and CEO of PodTech.Network, Inc. “He is a pioneer in blogging and social media. His knowledge of new media, the tech industry, and his success as a blogger fits perfectly with PodTech’s vision and mission.”

PodTech.Network, Inc. provides a media platform of Fresh Voices™ that ignite the power of conversation among companies, their customers, and partners and that is exactly what Scoble did when he started blogging at Microsoft. “He became a very fresh voice for Microsoft that millions of people respected and heard,” said Furrier. “His media expertise and vision is in alignment with PodTech’s business strategy and extension of our developing media platform,” Furrier added.

“I’ve seen the power of this new media, and how fast audiences can grow. Out of all the companies I’ve been watching, PodTech.Network is best positioned to take advantage of the rapid growth that I’m seeing in this marketplace and I’m thrilled to join this team,” Scoble said.

Before PodTech, Scoble was an “evangelist” working for Microsoft in product development.

PodTech.net Launches Marketing Voices™. New PodTech Podcast Brand Focuses on Social Media’s Impact on Marketing. Show Created and Hosted by Marketing Aficionado Jennifer Jones

MENLO PARK, CA. (May 1, 2006) PodTech.net, Inc.a media company dedicated to podcasting and delivering Fresh Voices™ for the iPod generation, today announced the debut of a new podcast brand called Marketing Voices™ on the InfoTalk™ network. The show represents the second in a new series of podcasts launched by PodTech in the last two weeks.

Under the Marketing Voices™ brand, PodTech will feature the fresh voices of innovative provocative leaders examining, among other topics, how social media tools such as wikis, blogs, podcasts, and online videos are changing marketing throughout the world. Marketing Voices™ will be hosted by industry veteran and known marketer, Jennifer Jones. Jones has counseled many of Silicon Valley’s premier companies including Apple Computer, Goldman Sachs, and Mayfield venture capital during her more than two decades in the technology industry.

According to John Furrier, CEO of PodTech.net, “Marketing Voices™ is unique in the podcasting industry. There is no other show being offered today that has this type of guest or content. Offering fresh voices who are driving the new perspectives of marketing is key to the podcast’s success. Given Jennifer’s marketing savvy and strategic expertise in branding and marketing, her background in technology and broadcast news and love of communicating new concepts, I am certain the show will resonate with our podcast audience,” Furrier added.

GUESTS ON MARKETING VOICES™ (MV)

The first guest on Marketing Voices is Steve King, Senior Counsel of Institute for the Future (ITF). King’s focus at ITF is how new media technology is impacting consumers and marketing. Future MV guests include, Ross Mayfield, CEO of Socialtext; Robert Scoble, recent author of the book, “Naked Conversations:How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers”; and Pete Blackshaw, Chief Marketing Officer of Nielsen Buzzmetrics.

ABOUT JENNIFER JONES
Jennifer Jones is a 25-year technology marketing veteran. Prior to PodTech, she was the first marketing partner at Mayfield, a premier venture capital fund based in Menlo Park. Jennifer worked with Mayfield and its portfolio companies providing strategic marketing and branding expertise for more than 15 years. Before Mayfield, Jennifer was a former Senior Vice President and General Manager of Regis McKenna, Inc (RMI) where she counseled technology companies including Apple Computer, Intel and Tandem Computers. Jennifer was the first marketing expert to develop and host a television show focusing on technology, called High Tech Visions, which was broadcast in the Bay Area in 1988. Prior to RMI, Jennifer also spent numerous years developing advertising and public relations campaigns for consumer companies while a Vice President at Ketchum Communications in San Francisco. Jennifer started her career in broadcast journalism as a reporter and producer at local and national news organizations.

Congrats to Jennifer.

With the crowd noice at the Naked Conversations book launch - Robert Scoble and Shel Israel’s new book - I had a great talk with the CEO of Kaboodle, Manish Chandra. Manish and I had a great discussion about the history of the entrepreneurial culture in India and how it has moved to Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley has proven to be a haven for entrepreneurs from India. Manish gives us fresh insight into why…. very inspiring to all entrepreneurs. Manish is good on the podcast. He’s a natural podcaster.

Manish and I later talked about setting up a formal India Tech channel here in Silicon Valley. Stay tuned.

Shel and I talk about the blog trends and his new book that he’s writing with Robert Scoble of Microsoft. Shel is finishing up his book on this shift to blogs and podcasting. Shel is an industry veteran, writer, and marketing public relations specialist. Shel takes his experience and research to talk about the impact of blogs. Excellent example of Electronic Arts and how by overlooking blogging hurt the company’s image and stock price.

Good conversation on where the blog and podcasting marketing is going. A must listen for a marketing professional looking to use RSS, blogs, and podcasting for marketing communications.
