PALO ALTO, October 12, 2007 - Former Vice President Al Gore, who was named co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize earlier today, said at a brief press conference at the Alliance for Climate Protection he hopes the award will raise global consciousness about climate change. Gore shares the peace award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a global network of scientists. The former Vice President pledged to donate all of his share of the $1.5 million prize to the Palo Alto-based Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization trying to change worldwide public opinion about the urgency of the climate crisis. PodTech’s Catherine Girardeau reports.

I know: nuclear energy has long had a bad name in the US. I believe, however, that it is an essential part of our future energy portfolio. Nuclear energy is clean, its generation is efficient, its resources are still abundant. Yes, nuclear waste treatment is a great concern. But, what are the current alternatives? I would rather deal with nuclear waste, for which I think we can find solutions, than with an increase in coal-based electricity generation.

To start a debate on the pros and cons of nuclear energy, and hopefully clarify some of the issues associated with it, I talked with Professor Burton Richter, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, former director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and 1976 nobel prize winner. This is part I of a series of four podcasts. I think you will find them insightful.

Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair has been described as a junior Nobel Prize competition, as more than a thousand high school kids from around the world come together to show their work and make connections. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett, who is attending the fair, says the global science community still calls the U.S. a focal point, but less so, as the rest of the world participates more and more in research and the making of technology. In this podcast, Barrett spoke with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about this year’s ISEF being held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Pictured on the PodTech player is junior high school student Lawrence Stringer (photo taken by Lloyd Gallman, Montgomery Advertiser) who is not a participant in this year’s ISEF. But Barrett has been a champion of improving science education at all levels to maintain the competitiveness of the U.S. in technology and industry.

Last Monday, Veer Bothra (seen here on the left) asked me to join in the monthly mixer he organises, called Mobile Monday. It’s loosely tied in with an eponymous event held around the world, an opportunity for mobile platform stakeholders to meet and talk about change … and more of the same.

Veer wanted me to talk about podcasting, not the nuts and bolts, but where it’s at and its relevance to the radio paradigm. That’s a juicy opportunity, I thought to myself, and so found myself making the difficult journey to North Mumbai (needs planning and a sort of instinctive feel for which combination of segments and modes of transport make it the least painful overall). (more…)

Most Silicon Valley technocrats will recognize three of the four people in this picture. They are Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founders of Google, and John Doerr from Kliener Perkins Caufield & Byers.

But you might not recognize the recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Dr. Yunus spoke about his work in microcredit and the Grameen Bank at a Google company-wide meeting in May 2004.

Microcredit is the extension of small loans to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. It has proven to be an effective and popular measure in the ongoing struggle against poverty. Dr. Yunus has a extended description of microcredit here and in his book. Learn more about the Grameen Foundation at their Website or RSS feed.

If you are Java developer and are interested in helping the Grameen Bank, they are coordinating an open source effort called the Microfinance Open Source (MIFOS) project.
