Intel ISEF 2008: Atlanta Hosts Global Science Fair

In this video podcast, Dr. Oren Shriki, a science teacher at the Israel Arts and Sciences Academy, speaks about Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, taking place in Atlanta, May 11-16. (As excitement builds toward the event’s opening, you can follow along on a dedicated Intel ISEF blog.)

Many of the best young scientists from around the world will attend, selected through regional science fairs for a wide range of skills, from identifying and addressing important scientific challenges or questions to using organized and logical thought to reach conclusions. The participants in Intel ISEF are very likely to be tomorrow’s leaders in technology, medicine and health, agriculture, environmental science and engineering.

During Intel ISEF, their work will be judged by professional scientists who will look for gifted communicators with excellent foundational understanding in specific research and the scientific process.

No matter what the judges decide, however, participants in the annual event will benefit from meeting their peers from around the world, hearing from Nobel laureates and scientists involved in the same kinds of research as theirs, and also creating lasting memories, like those found on the blog of 2004 ISEF alum (and member of a Fourth Award-winning team) Jayson Reggie Obos.

Earth Stories: Gore in Palo Alto on Winning Nobel

PALO ALTO, October 12, 2007 - Former Vice President Al Gore, who was named co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize earlier today, said at a brief press conference at the Alliance for Climate Protection he hopes the award will raise global consciousness about climate change. Gore shares the peace award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a global network of scientists. The former Vice President pledged to donate all of his share of the $1.5 million prize to the Palo Alto-based Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization trying to change worldwide public opinion about the urgency of the climate crisis. PodTech’s Catherine Girardeau reports.

Vickram’s View: Mobile Monday in Mumbai

Last Monday, Veer Bothra (seen here on the left) asked me to join in the monthly mixer he organises, called Mobile Monday. It’s loosely tied in with an eponymous event held around the world, an opportunity for mobile platform stakeholders to meet and talk about change … and more of the same.

Veer wanted me to talk about podcasting, not the nuts and bolts, but where it’s at and its relevance to the radio paradigm. That’s a juicy opportunity, I thought to myself, and so found myself making the difficult journey to North Mumbai (needs planning and a sort of instinctive feel for which combination of segments and modes of transport make it the least painful overall).
