This past Fall, Intel announced that the Xeon 7400-series processors posted record performance results, marking the first time that the industry has seen 1.2 million database transactions per minute on an 8-socket IBM server. It was announced by Intel Executive Vice President Pat Gelsinger at IDF 2008, and it was the topic of many spirited industry conversations, as well. In this video podcast, Intel’s Mike Moreno speaks with IBM’s Robert Zuber about what the news means for IT managers, and what IBM is doing to help reduce the size of the IT footprint in the enterprise. They also mention new benchmarks around database and virtualization.

In this video podcast, we travel to Austin, Texas and the SxSW Interactive festival, to focus on what’s inside people’s computers, and just how much they’re relying on those computers for work, communication and - all-important at the SxSW Festival — creativity.

Intel’s Bryan Rhoads took the opportunity to blog from the conference using a MID. He used the mobile Internet device to bring his blog readers along with him to breakfast, and to snap a picture of two of Intel’s tiniest products - the Atom processor and the silicon core of an Intel Core 2 Duo.

We showed those tiny products to attendees at SxSWi, and found out how some creative folks are interacting with their computers (and what’s inside).

During the awards dinner, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett joked, after seeing the quality of work from the high school finalists in the the Intel Science Talent Search 2008, that he felt like burning his Ph.D. dissertation. But the depth of research practiced by the finalists is astonishing. The winner of the competition, Shivani Sud of Durham, N.C., says she will continue to develop her study of genomics and the prevention of recurring cancer. PodTech’s Jason Lopez prepared this podcast featuring all ten of the top finishers describing their projects.

The Intel Science Talent Search culminates in Washington, D.C. this weekend. The high school science projects cover areas like engineering, math, physics, medicine and health, environmental science, zoology, and others. The research these students have engaged in is astonishing. Many projects will result in innovations, inventions, new treatments, and further research as students move on to college and into careers. Forty finalists from high schools around the U.S. will attend the 6-day event where as ten winners will be announced. In this podcast, PodTech’s Jason Lopez talks with two entrants who’ve developed new energy technologies, one which harnesses the electrical energy of microbes.

Intel’s smallest processor to date, built with it’s tiny 45nm transistors for a new wave of small, mobile Internet devices. The chip gets the name Intel Atom. There’s also Intel Centrino Atom, a combination of chip technologies for low cost, low power and high performing devices designed to bring better Internet experiences to wireless compute devices.

Intel’s Brian Fravel helped to announce Atom’s brand name on Sunday, followed by Bob Duffy and others. Outside of Intel, conversation continues. Most blog mentions highlight the tiny processor’s likeley impact on mobile internet devices. As Joel Hruska writes at Ars Technica, “The Atom architecture is intended to give Intel a foothold in handheld devices that have traditionally been the sole domain of very low-power RISC processors.” Noting that no Atom-enabled products have yet been announced, Yahoo! Tech’s Christopher Null predicts that “you should definitely expect some in the next few months.”

Last October, Microsoft invested $240 million in Facebook, suddenly placing Facebook’s value at a lofty $15 billion. Now, we see that revenues for 2007 came to around $150 million, while expenses still leave the company with a negative cash flow that could be as high as $150 million next year.

Microsoft’s recent move to acquire Yahoo!, which began with a telephone call from Microsoft CEO Steven A. Ballmer to Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang (a call that Ballmer later claimed was “definitely not a courtesy call”) prompted us to revisit the Facebook/Microsoft relationship - what it means for Facebook, and what Microsoft might have been thinking last Fall.

As Facebook moves to launch versions in Spanish, with more languages coming soon, analysts are looking again at the juggernaut, guessing about whether breaking into languages will erode its power as a single network around the world. Meanwhile, widgets and applications continue to proliferate, and Microsoft’s role in aiding advertising at Facebook continues to be a work in progress.

Forrester Research senior analyst (and former host of PodTech’s own Web Strategy show) Jeremiah Owyang speaks with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about Facebook’s evolving business.

Marketing organizations are realizing the benefits of social media. Business Wire, traditionally viewed as the distributor of news to the mainstream press, is jumping into the social media world with products and services that expand a marketer’s reach into the new media realm. Like traditional journalists, bloggers can leverage the news wires to keep abreast on topics or issues. Business Wire crosses over to include new media publishers as it offers organizations services from the wire, including offerings like multimedia enclosures, text optimization, social bookmarking, tagging or something as simple as trackbacks. In one example, Engadget was able to get news of a new product release along with an official high-quality product image so they didn’t have to link to a lower quality picture on another site.

Malcolm Atherton presented at the Blogging for Business conference in Salt Lake City and took time out to talk with Brad Baldwin about how traditional news distribution services are adapting to support bloggers and new media.

Security risk assessments, security risk modeling, and protecting against security threats by maintaining a threat agent library — these and other programs form the basis for understanding threats to network security for Intel. In this video podcast, TIm Casey, senior strategic analyst for information security at Intel, discusses the strategy behind Intel’s efforts.

Intel maintains a “threat agent library,” with profiles of security threats, and the agents who might perpetrate them. It also uses real-time threat scenarios, or war games, to try to bring information about the actual environment together with threat agents and threats to test and improve threat response.

From fending off ordinary hackers to more organized crime or cyber terrorism, Casey’s role is like that of an IT secret agent working to keep Intel’s secrets out of the hands of real-world threat agents.

Casey blogs about IT security at IT@Intel. In a recent blog post, Power Tools in Information Risk Management, he discusses the tools he uses in managing information security risks at Intel. Check out other Intel blogs at Intel Open Port. (A recent post by Intel’s Matthew Rosenquist’s notes that the threats to network security are living, breathing opponents who are creative, knowledgeable, motivated, and have personal objectives in mind.

Broadband, connectivity, Wi-Fi, accessibility and education efforts are all priorities for the ongoing efforts in developing nations and regions around the globe. Intel, along with the United Nations and International Telecommunication Union (ITU), among others, is participating this month in the Connect Africa Summit, which aims to bring together human, technical and financial resources to speed development and improvement of Africa’s Information and Communication Technology, or ICT infrastructure. Expanding broadband, wireless and mobile access technologies is the current push, after indications that Africa’s general ICT development is lagging behind its unprecedented adoption of mobile phone technology (400 percent in just a few years - well ahead of projections).

Dr. Hamadoun Touré is secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union. His call for what he refers to as a “Marshall Plan for ICT infrastructure development in Africa,” has been heard by the United Nations, and particularly by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett who, leading the UN’s Global Alliance for ICT and Development, or UN GAID, is working to bring the leading ICT companies in Silicon Valley and around the world to the challenges in Africa.

The United Nations’s Millennium Development Goals are driving innovation around the world, as the challenge of reducing global poverty by half by 2015 looms. The Connect Africa effort brings together private enterprise and non-governmental organizations for a two-day summit in Kigali, Rwanda, beginning on October 29, hosted by Rwanda President Paul Kagame and John Kufour, president of Ghana and chairman of the African Union.

Intel’s World Ahead Program, established in May 2006, has already seen the chip maker pledge more than $1 billion over five years to bridge the digital divide and bring full access to technology to the developing world.

Gore shares the peace award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a global network of scientists. The former Vice President pledged to donate all of his share of the $1.5 million prize to the Palo Alto-based Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization trying to change worldwide public opinion about the urgency of the climate crisis. PodTech’s Catherine Girardeau reports.

Users are looking for a richer, more cinematic experience from the Internet, according to Justin Rattner, Intel chief technology officer and director, Corporate Technology Group. Rattner gave the final keynote of the Fall IDF in San Francisco, focusing on virtual worlds, which are evolving into what he referred to as the “3-D Internet,” in a keynote titled, “Research and Development: Virtual Worlds - The Rise of the 3D Internet.”

Rattner, who spoke with PodTech’s Michael Johnson to give a preview of the Fall IDF, wrapped up the annual developer conference by acknowledging Wired Magazine’s prediction that, as social media and user-generated content hit the mainstream at the same time as the rise of broadband and increased connectivity (and mobility), the coming year could see 60 million participants in online virtual worlds.

Rattner was also joined onstage by Greg Nuyens, CEO of Qwaq, who demoed virtual worlds for the enterprise. Outside of business applications, virtual surgery (especially as a training tool) suggests that realistic virtual environments are already a significant force in some communities.

The larger message that Rattner left the crowd with was that the computing power that will be necessary to deliver this rich 3-D experience will have to be substantial, especially given the demand that real time or “frame rate” visual experience for the 3D Web will demand.

Investors such as Jay MacDonald and Bill Detwiler are bullish on web-based advertising. MacDonald says advertisers have always wanted to know exactly who listened to their ads on radio or saw them in magazines. You cannot click on a newspaper ad. But with features like interactivity and social media that add value to online adverts, the Internet promises to increase the effectiveness of messages. Jason Lopez recorded this podcast for PodTech at the Convergence 2.0 conference, presented by The Deal, in New York City.

The HP Personal Systems Group recently unveiled its 2008 product line at a celebrity-studded event at Skylight Studios, in Manhattan (and yes, that’s “personal” as in, The Computer is Personal Again). In addition to HP’s new iPAQ handheld communications devices, its MediaSmart PC and MediaSmart Server, and a new line of laptops optimized for multimedia use — already enough newsworthy stuff to keep customers, bloggers and investors talking for awhile — the announcement included HP’s entry into the gaming enthusiast market, with the Blackbird 002.

In September 2006, when HP acquired VoodooPC and brought VoodooPC Founder Rahul Sood on as chief technology officer for HP’s Global Gaming Business, the wheels were set in motion for HP to make bold statement in the gaming space. Sood explains what’s been going on behind the curtain for the last 12 months here, but the bottom line is that the “symbolic” partnership between Voodoo and HP has, by many accounts, not only marked HP’s entry into gaming with a splash, but raised the bar for the gaming PC industry, from the Blackbird 002’s high-performance engineering to the kind of design that has some comparing it with some stylish competitors.

On hand for the announcement were the celebrity “achievers” who have made their “faceless” statements in television advertisements spotlighting the adaptability and versatility of HP’s personal computing technology, including Olympic Gold Medalist Snowboarder Shaun White, Tennis Pro and fashion designer Serena Williams, supermodel Petra Nemcova and The Orange County Choppers, all of whom took a few moments to speak with PodTech’s Catherine Girardeau about HP and the role of personal media technology in their lives. Each of them, in their own way, embodies the event’s theme — “Your Life is the Show.”

The hopping party also provided a chance for press and enthusiasts to hear from several HP Personal Systems Group execs, including Satjiv Chahil, senior vice president of global marketing and Todd Bradley, executive vice president; Rahul Sood, CTO for HP Gaming (and founder of VoodooPC), and Phil McKinney, vice president and CTO for the Personal Systems Group and general manager of HP’s Gaming Business Unit.

Responses to the announcements have come from around the globe — in Britain, one blogger named Dave acknowledging, “This is not just any PC. This is the Blackbird 002,” while in Florida, Mark N. writes about the new PC with a simple, “Now that’s what I’m talking about.”

But the announcement wasn’t all about the gaming PC — it was also about building community around HP’s efforts in multimedia. Philip Churchill notes, on his blog, that in addition to the MediaSmart Server unveiled at the event, HP is supporting it with a “community for enthusiasts [of the server] to share information, offer support, and enjoy the product together.”

In addition to the PodTech video, photos from the event can be found here.

The Apple WWDC 2007 keynote with Steve Jobs is this Monday, June 11 at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Be sure to come to PodTech where, as like last year, you can start listening to the Apple WWDC Steve Jobs Keynote podcast before Steve Jobs finishes speaking. The keynote begins at 10am.

In this keynote preview, Rio Pesino and Kevin Edwards discuss what’s likely to occur: iPod sales figures, iPhone sales estimates, Macintosh market share increases, and a Apple TV status update.

Leopard (OS X 10.5) will likely be demonstrated in greater detail, and we hope will feature ZFS in addition to previously announced features.

Also in this podcast is a round up of rumors and speculation about Apple opening up the iPhone to developers and possibly a huge initiative for developers for Apple gamming.

Speaking of developers, developers, developers… how much stage time will Microsoft’s new head of Mac development (MacBU), Craig Eisler, get to show Office 2008 if .Mac will be including all kinds of competitive Google apps?

For more updates from the rumor mill as well as other sites expecting to provide text and photo updates, check out: AppleInsider, Mac Rumors, Think Secret, MacDailyNews, and Mac Observer.

You might recognize my face from the video I did at RSA, but do you know anything about Martin McKeay? I thought I’d take a few minutes to tell you who I am and why I’m the host of The Security Show on PodTech. I started my IT career as a desktop support technician working my way into computer security and now into the position of Product Evangelist for Cobia at StillSecure. It’s been a long and interesting journey. My video skills are a little rough, as is my voice tonight (due to allergies). The good news in both cases is that things can only get better. You can read my blog, the Network Security Blog, which is also the home of my podcast.
