Intel & HP Announce World’s Best 4-Socket TPC-C Result

Intel and HP recently announced the world’s best four-socket TPC-C benchmark result — a showing of 634,000 transactions per minute. HP’s Aaron Spurlock joins Noe Garcia from Intel to discuss the specifics of how the HP Proliant DL580 G5 server with Intel Xeon 7400-series processors stacks up against world-class competition.

Also, at Fall IDF in San Francisco, Intel also announced that the Xeon 7400-series processors posted record performance results, marking the first time that the industry has seen 1.2 million database transactions per minute on an 8-socket IBM server.

IBM Announces World Record TPC-C Result: What Does It Mean for IT Managers?

This past Fall, Intel announced that the Xeon 7400-series processors posted record performance results, marking the first time that the industry has seen 1.2 million database transactions per minute on an 8-socket IBM server. It was announced by Intel Executive Vice President Pat Gelsinger at IDF 2008, and it was the topic of many spirited industry conversations, as well. In this video podcast, Intel’s Mike Moreno speaks with IBM’s Robert Zuber about what the news means for IT managers, and what IBM is doing to help reduce the size of the IT footprint in the enterprise. They also mention new benchmarks around database and virtualization.

Intel’s introduction of 45nm technology last year brought with it new levels of innovation and data center efficiency. With a trend toward bigger servers using virtualization, however, comes a need for increased performance headroom. In this podcast, Intel’s Chris Peters discusses some of the innovations brought by 45nm, as well as what’s next in virtualization.

Chris also spoke earlier this year about the impact that the 45nm manufacturing process is having on Intel’s Xeon processors.

In this video we hear from Sudip Chahal, principal engineer with the Intel IT Enterprise Architecture Group, talking about a new white paper from IT@Intel, “Evaluating Two- and Four-Socket Server Virtualization Platforms.” Chahal talks about the proof of concept testing and total cost of ownership analysis conducted in order to compare two- and four-socket servers based on Intel Xeon processors. The goal was to examine how each of four different servers would perform in a variety of virtualization scenarios.

EMC Creates Web Services Standard for Enterprise Content Management

Cemaphore Systems’ MailShadow for Google Apps keeps your Microsoft Outlook environment in sync with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Gmail Contacts. Make a change in one, and the other is instantly updated to reflect the change. MailShadow for Google Apps is receiving a lot of attention since organizations can eliminate the expensive infrastructure, hardware, and co-location facilities required by Exchange, but still allow users to leverage the client-side productivity features in Outlook.

Pandora is one of my favorite Internet services. It lets you build a customized radio station by starting with the names of your favorite bands and songs. It then brings you more music that’s similar to that. Here Pandora’s CTO, Tom Conrad, talks about the service, demos its new mobile service, and discusses new legislation under discussion that is designed to help keep Internet radio alive. For those who don’t know, Tom explains how the music industry is threatening to decimate Internet Radio providers by charging new, much higher, fees than regular radio has to pay to broadcast music. We have an interesting discussion about that while walking around San Francisco on a Saturday afternoon.

Intel’s Craig Barrett: Malaysia’s on Track

Intel’s Craig Barrett says that private companies can’t go it alone when trying to make a difference in developing markets, and neither can governments. In a visit to Malaysia, the chairman of the chip giant stopped off at Penang, where the company has committed itself to help local schools. Barrett, a former professor at Stanford University, is a big believer in education, especially in developing teachers. Barrett also appeared at the 16th World Congress on Information Technology where he delivered a keynote reaffirming his belief that real change can happen when governments and private industry team up.

In this video podcast PodTech producer Jason Lopez captured Barrett’s visits in Penang and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

When Intel’s research teams think about the future of computing - from mobile devices with near-limitless functionality to technology for the developing world to virtual worlds and advanced robotics, they are literally mapping our future (a future that could include, for example, a cafe table with networking ability). In this podcast preview of the 2008 Research@Intel Day, to be held at the Computer History Museum in the heart of Silicon Valley, we hear from some of Intel’s key players when it comes to the next generations of technology. Hear what Intel Research is focusing on now from Andrew Chien, vice president, corporate technology group and director of Intel Research; Intel Chief Technology Officer and Director of the Corporate Technology Group Justin Rattner; and Eric Brewer, director, Intel Research Berkeley.

The Deal - Deals in the Middle Market

Whether you call it a credit crunch or a credit squeeze, there’s evidence to be found that the chilled climate for deals has spread from the realm of the mega-deal into the middle market. To discuss the new economic realities in deal-making, The Deal convened a panel, “Deals in the Middle Market: How do they differ in this climate?” at the recent Private Capital Symposium, held in New York City.

For this podcast, panelists Steven Rattner, managing director, DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, and James Epstein, partner, Pepper Hamilton, spoke with PodTech’s Jason Lopez.

The Deal’s Private Capital Symposium brought together private equity professionals, angel investors, buyout and venture investors, corporate acquisition professionals, M&A advisors and professional services providers. The event took place in New York’s Essex House, on May 14, 2008.

Intel ISEF 2008: Atlanta Hosts Global Science Fair

In this video podcast, Dr. Oren Shriki, a science teacher at the Israel Arts and Sciences Academy, speaks about Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, taking place in Atlanta, May 11-16. (As excitement builds toward the event’s opening, you can follow along on a dedicated Intel ISEF blog.)

Many of the best young scientists from around the world will attend, selected through regional science fairs for a wide range of skills, from identifying and addressing important scientific challenges or questions to using organized and logical thought to reach conclusions. The participants in Intel ISEF are very likely to be tomorrow’s leaders in technology, medicine and health, agriculture, environmental science and engineering.

During Intel ISEF, their work will be judged by professional scientists who will look for gifted communicators with excellent foundational understanding in specific research and the scientific process.

No matter what the judges decide, however, participants in the annual event will benefit from meeting their peers from around the world, hearing from Nobel laureates and scientists involved in the same kinds of research as theirs, and also creating lasting memories, like those found on the blog of 2004 ISEF alum (and member of a Fourth Award-winning team) Jayson Reggie Obos.

I was one of the few outsiders to visit eBay and witness an internal “Demo Expo.” The Demo Expo was a way for employees to come up with a new technology or feature and show it off to eBay’s employees and executives. I picked my favorite four teams, and this is one of them. Thanks to eBay’s Disruptive Innovations team, which is the one that put together the Demo Expo and invited me along. The only rule was that these projects had to use eBay’s standard publicly-available APIs.

Here Neel Sundaresan, distinguished research scientist, eBay Research Labs, shows me Emosi Sosial, which is like a tag cloud, but shows me very quickly whether a seller is highly regarded or not in the areas most important to the interested buyer.

The Deal: Private Capital Symposium 2008

The private capital markets are in an intriguing position. The economy is sluggish after last year’s sub-prime mess and major buyout firms have not seen a lot of action. That was expected. But the middle markets have only dropped off slightly. In this podcast John Morris, assistant managing editor at The Deal, speaks with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about what makes the middle markets different.

These and other issues are the subject of the upcoming Private Capital Symposium 2008, hosted by The Deal (May 14 in New York City). The one-day conference will cover issues such as where opportunities exist in a struggling economy, how financing has changed, why the middle markets are okay, and what is happening with sovereign wealth funds.
