Self-Encrypting Disk Drives to Move into Data Centers

The final stretch for CES revealed bleary eyes from late night parties, cheers for Scoble as he appeared on CNBC, and a rocking good time at BlogHaus. In this installment we get to see rapping about memory chips, amazing flat panel TVs , new technologies for wireless home entertainment from Belkin, and the final results from Intel’s green screen booth. Seagate announces hybrid drive for laptops

In this podcast, Marc Jourlait, Seagate’s VP of Global Marketing, talks with PodTech’s Michael Johnson about hybrid hard drives, a combination of Flash and hard drives with new features like faster startup time, increased battery life for laptops, and more. Jourlait says that currently, Windows Vista is the only OS able to take advantage of the hybrid drive’s special capabilities, through Vista’s ReadyDrive technology. I had a chance to sit down and talk with Seagate’s CEO Bill Watkins about Seagate’s Q3 results. The San Jose Mercury News recently reported that Seagate has revised it’s estimates but Seagate continues to be the big fish in the disk drive waters.

Bill Watkins talks candidly about their quarterly results and he sees an industry that is growing into all things digital. Relating to this past quarter Bill comments on the pricing strategies of the competition. He sees what he calls “bizarre pricing’ by his competitors who are willing to lose money just to stay competitive. Seagate is known for their operational efficiencies so Watkins is very confident that Seagate will prevail. He says that they need to be smarter.

Seagate recently completed the acquisition of Maxtor and rolled out a new consumer line of drives. I have been really impressed with Seagate’s recent moves. They remain competitive with their products and have leadership in their technology. With everyone moving to HD and embedding digital in the lives, I expect that storage companies will continue to be part of user’s lives.

Seagate introduces “Dave,” portable wireless storage device

Here, my sponsor, Seagate, releases a new product, Digital Audio Video Experience (or D.A.V.E) technology, while we walk around San Jose’s famous “Tech” Museum. What is DAVE? It’s a device that fits in your hand, or your pocket. Other devices talk to it through USB, BlueTooth, or WiFi wireless connections, and it stores stuff. Music. Videos. Photos. Or standard old files. You can play those off of a cell phone, or a laptop, or a desktop computer. There’s a software API on the device so software developers can write programs that use DAVE.
