It started with an innocuous audio interview with the then-President of the Products and Technology Group at SAP AG, Shai Agassi. Then came Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz, sitting at a table with an umbrella. It wasn’t long before Scoble introduced us to Thomas Hawk (investment advisor by day, ubiquitous digital media creator by night). There was the Golden Gate Bridge walk (spread over three parts!), and then came pumpkins — lots of pumpkins. Somewhere between the Golden Gate Bridge and the pumpkin patch, conversations with entrepreneurs like b5media Founder and President Jeremy Wright and SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill.

There was lunch with Bill Gates and another lunch with Mark Cuban. We met folks from Salesforce and Zillow, SocialText, Retrevo and Maxthon. We met political bloggers and a presidential candidate on the campaign trail.

But one of our favorites? It’s an interview with Microsoft’s Gary Flake on Photosynth.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Robert Scoble is still the author of the incredibly popular tech geek blog, Scobleizer.com. He’s also the managing director over at FastCompany.tv, where ScobleShow editor and producer Rocky Barbanica is also now a senior producer.

Since that fateful first ScobleShow, Agassi has moved on to found Project Better Place, in order to pursue interests in alternative energy and climate change. Jonathan Schwartz is still at Sun, still blogging, and lots of the start-ups we met are still kicking around, some of them very successfully! It’s worth taking a few minutes to surf through the archives, or just wait to see what pops up in the Classic feed. Good for a few goofy laughs and a little insight into where we’ve been and where we might be going. Oh, and Thomas Hawk is still evangelizing for photo sharing and digital media, and still believes that the best pictures in the world have yet to be taken.

Tom Foremski, editor of Silicon Valley Watcher, led a panel discussion on Day 1 of the Fall Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. The panel dealt directly with the friction that often arises between the burgeoning social media forces in the enterprise and the IT groups that find themselves in opposition to the kinds of needs created by those newer social networks.

The panel in this podcast includes Peter Kaminski, CTO of Socialtext, Jackie Medecki, attorney for social media and marketing at Intel, Jeff Moriarty, a social media/Web 2.0 design engineer at Intel, John Miner, an IT methodologist at Intel, and Eleanor Wynn, a social technology architect at Intel

It’s IT’s stereotypical response (”No”) to questions about setting up blogs and wikis, that prompts the debate. But as John Miner points out, most large companies inherently already have blogs and wikis — they just don’t realize it. This, he says, is because they tend to grow organically inside of large IT structures. But the fact is that the candor and conversation that make up the substance of blogs and wikis do tend to threaten some of the structures of the enterprise — especially when it comes to legal concerns.

How does Intel handle the challenges? Especially when it comes to the “gray areas?” This video podcast shows how one large corporation is navigating social media in the enterprise.

PodTech.net Launches Marketing Voices™. New PodTech Podcast Brand Focuses on Social Media’s Impact on Marketing. Show Created and Hosted by Marketing Aficionado Jennifer Jones

MENLO PARK, CA. (May 1, 2006) PodTech.net, Inc.a media company dedicated to podcasting and delivering Fresh Voices™ for the iPod generation, today announced the debut of a new podcast brand called Marketing Voices™ on the InfoTalk™ network. The show represents the second in a new series of podcasts launched by PodTech in the last two weeks.

Under the Marketing Voices™ brand, PodTech will feature the fresh voices of innovative provocative leaders examining, among other topics, how social media tools such as wikis, blogs, podcasts, and online videos are changing marketing throughout the world. Marketing Voices™ will be hosted by industry veteran and known marketer, Jennifer Jones. Jones has counseled many of Silicon Valley’s premier companies including Apple Computer, Goldman Sachs, and Mayfield venture capital during her more than two decades in the technology industry.

According to John Furrier, CEO of PodTech.net, “Marketing Voices™ is unique in the podcasting industry. There is no other show being offered today that has this type of guest or content. Offering fresh voices who are driving the new perspectives of marketing is key to the podcast’s success. Given Jennifer’s marketing savvy and strategic expertise in branding and marketing, her background in technology and broadcast news and love of communicating new concepts, I am certain the show will resonate with our podcast audience,” Furrier added.

GUESTS ON MARKETING VOICES™ (MV)

The first guest on Marketing Voices is Steve King, Senior Counsel of Institute for the Future (ITF). King’s focus at ITF is how new media technology is impacting consumers and marketing. Future MV guests include, Ross Mayfield, CEO of Socialtext; Robert Scoble, recent author of the book, “Naked Conversations:How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers”; and Pete Blackshaw, Chief Marketing Officer of Nielsen Buzzmetrics.

ABOUT JENNIFER JONES
Jennifer Jones is a 25-year technology marketing veteran. Prior to PodTech, she was the first marketing partner at Mayfield, a premier venture capital fund based in Menlo Park. Jennifer worked with Mayfield and its portfolio companies providing strategic marketing and branding expertise for more than 15 years. Before Mayfield, Jennifer was a former Senior Vice President and General Manager of Regis McKenna, Inc (RMI) where she counseled technology companies including Apple Computer, Intel and Tandem Computers. Jennifer was the first marketing expert to develop and host a television show focusing on technology, called High Tech Visions, which was broadcast in the Bay Area in 1988. Prior to RMI, Jennifer also spent numerous years developing advertising and public relations campaigns for consumer companies while a Vice President at Ketchum Communications in San Francisco. Jennifer started her career in broadcast journalism as a reporter and producer at local and national news organizations.

Full Disclosure: Ross Mayfield is one of the nicest guys I know. When PodTech was first formed Ross let me and my team use his office at SocialText. In the spirit of sharing, it was a great start for PodTech. Thanks Ross! He booted PodTech out, because his company was growing so fast that he needed the space - congrats.

PodTech is now in fresh new office space.

Open Source -”The Wiki Way”. Today I got the story today from Ross Mayfield on their big announcement for Web2.0 conference. Ross and SocialText are going OpenSource and going big with it. Great stuff Ross. Socialtext, the first wiki company and market leader in enterprise wiki solutions, announced today that it is returning to its open-source roots by adopting a new commercial business model. After several years of market momentum — with an assortment of wiki solutions developed on top of an open-source wiki — Socialtext has begun sharing code with the developer community to further the adoption of wikis in the enterprise. The company’s first contribution is the Wikiwyg, an innovative, user-friendly “what you see is what you get” editing tool for wikis. Socialtext is a winner of Business Week’s 2005 “Best of the Web,” and is widely recognized for pioneering the development and use of open source technology and best practices in the enterprise.

This moment toward Wiki’s and the rise of SocialText is a proof point that the shift to Web2.o is here. Open, simple, easy to use tools for users not just geeks.

It’s companies like SocialText for Wikis and NextPage for document management that define this real shift.
