Facebook Status Update

Last October, Microsoft invested $240 million in Facebook, suddenly placing Facebook’s value at a lofty $15 billion. Now, we see that revenues for 2007 came to around $150 million, while expenses still leave the company with a negative cash flow that could be as high as $150 million next year.

Microsoft’s recent move to acquire Yahoo!, which began with a telephone call from Microsoft CEO Steven A. Ballmer to Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang (a call that Ballmer later claimed was “definitely not a courtesy call”) prompted us to revisit the Facebook/Microsoft relationship - what it means for Facebook, and what Microsoft might have been thinking last Fall.

As Facebook moves to launch versions in Spanish, with more languages coming soon, analysts are looking again at the juggernaut, guessing about whether breaking into languages will erode its power as a single network around the world. Meanwhile, widgets and applications continue to proliferate, and Microsoft’s role in aiding advertising at Facebook continues to be a work in progress.

Forrester Research senior analyst (and former host of PodTech’s own Web Strategy show) Jeremiah Owyang speaks with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about Facebook’s evolving business.

Microsoft’s Popfly: A Mashup Platform for Consumers

I was over at the Halo 3 launch party at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus and ran into Dan Fernandez, lead product manager for Visual Studio, demonstrating Popfly. It’s an alpha version of an easy-to-use mashup platform that allows consumers to easily create web services with multiple data sources, and embed them in their Web sites. These widgets can also be easiily shared amongst users. It is Microsoft’s first application of its Silverlight technology.

I caught up with Iftach Ian Amit from Finjan right after his talk at Defcon. He explained why widgets and gadgets on various websites and platforms are inherently insecure, despite the fact that standards exist to create secure gadgets. No platform is safe from these insecurities, as evidenced by a currently unpatched Microsoft vulnerability that Ian wasn’t willing to discuss in detail.

LunchMeet: Collect and Share Videos with VodPod

I recently sat down with VodPod CEO Mark Hall at his San Francisco office. VodPod is an interesting video aggregation and sharing service that works by building ‘pods’ of videos by using the sharing embed code of popular video hosting sites. These pods can then appear as sidebar widgets on blogs. VodPod just launched some new features around RSS feeds, including the ability to follow any video series by entering it’s feed URL. Very intuitive and featuring some fun reporting tools, VodPod makes sense if you want to collect and share videos you might find most anywhere on the Internet, including PodTech of course.

Steve Jobs continues the countdown of ten Leopard features in part three of his keynote address from the Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) at San Francisco’s Moscone West. Enhancements to iChat elicited the biggest buzz from the crowd of 4,000 software developers. Those enhancements include a slideshow feature within a live video conference, called iChat Theater, as well as photo or video backdrops to a video conference.

Yahoo’s Puts Out Major Release of Konfabulator (3.0)

Yahoo puts out a major release of Konfabulator (3.0). I had a chat with Toni Schneider, Yahoo’s VP of the Developer Network, about this big news for the Yahoo developer group. More on the upcoming Podcast here at PodTech (Toni was busy working all weekend so I could sit down with him in time for the announcement). Konfabulaor is described as a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to - it’s very AJAX’y. Available at widgets.yahoo.com

Personally I love this product and see many implications for providing PodTech podcasting utilities for users (more on that another time).

The big news here: it’s a major new release of Konfabulator (3.0), significant for a few reasons

- First version of Konfabulator that’s fully tied into the Yahoo Network: Konfab users can now log into their Yahoo accounts and access their Yahoo photo albums, address book, calendar, etc from desktop widgets

- The release contains 5 new Yahoo widgets (Maps, Search, Contacts, Mail, Notepad) and 4 revised ones (Photos, Calendar, Stocks, Weather)

- Widget developers can create widgets that tap into Yahoo user data (calendars, etc), plus other key new developer features like subviews and XML DOM support

- We’re releasing some usage numbers (like 10 MM widgets downloaded since the acquisition in early August (!))

- Konfab gets officially renamed to Yahoo Widgets (now that it’s fully integrated)

Why did Yahoo purchase Konfabulator? Yahoo’s recent purchase of Pixoria, developer of the quirky but seriously cool Konfabulator platform, has many pundits scratching their heads—what on earth would a web search company want with all of those software widgets? Even before buying Konfabulator, Yahoo has been pushing forward on several fronts to ease access into the company’s vast storehouses of content and services. For example, Yahoo APIs are available for developers to build their own Yahoo-centric search applications. Other APIs allow developers to build applications on top of Yahoo maps, music and Flickr services, and to integrate Yahoo content into web sites via RSS feeds.

This was a bold move at the time (to buy Konfabulator) but I have a feeling (as do others) that this will unleash some serious creativity for developers.

I have to say that Yahoo is very open and web 2.0 developer friendly.
