It didn’t take long for wireless computing and the mobility it affords to become an accepted part of the landscape of public spaces, offices and homes. But there was still a catch: you couldn’t stay connected outside of the hotspots offered at cafes, airports and hotel lobbies. WiMAX changes all of that as Baltimore becomes the first city in the country where a full-scale commercial wireless broadband rollout (offered by Xohm) will mean that users can actually roam wherever they want and connect to the Internet with notebook computers and Mobile Internet Devices. It opens the door for a wide range of embedded devices in things like parking meters, kiosks and anything else you can think of that would benefit from Internet connectivity. The launch features not only new WiMAX products from Xohm, but devices from handhelds to laptops that feature Intel’s new WiMAX enabled chips. You can follow WiMAX stories on blogs.intel.com/technology and scoop.intel.com. New to WiMAX? Learn more about WiMAX here and <a here. And see how WiMAX is being used to connect people with education, healthcare and new opportunities in developing countries.

As broadband connectivity spreads around the world, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is beginning to reshape the industry. In 2007, the number of households using telco/IPTV services grew to over 14 million worldwide (Parks Associates, April 2008). That number is expected to grow to more than 80 million households by 2011 (Strategy Analytics, January 2007). Providers who wish to survive must have the ability to deliver compelling IP based content, services, and high definition video.

Broadcast International’s President and CEO Rod Tiede gives a high-level overview of the IPTV market and the opportunity for broadcaster and cable operators, satellite, and even mobile and wireless providers. Broadcast International and its CodecSys compression technology leverages the limited bandwidth typical of the DSL networks many consumers access, and makes it possible to send up to four times the video channels over the same connection, with no loss in video quality.

Here’s one student that takes the “Science Fair” to the next level. Bridger Maxwell, a high school student at Utah County Academy of Sciences (UCAS) decided to create a multi-touch table for his Science Fair entry–kinda like an iPhone screen, and Microsoft Surface on a budget.

The multi-touch experience allows for object movement, rotation, growing and shrinking, and even multi-hand, multi-person use. Inspired by movies like Minority Report, Maxwell leverages Apple OS X, code developed during Google Summer of Code called Open Touch, and his own code. The table, made from plexiglass and a dissembled Acer monitor, uses infrared light emitting diodes and an IR camera to detect and transmit fingertip motions as inputs.

Maxwell also expects to experience a future where multi-touch technology becomes a standard way to interact with applications, particularly for graphic manipulation and even gaming. Maxwell submitted his code back to the community at code.google.com/p/corkboard/ and has received coverage on Ars Technica and a local NBC news story.

Maxwell also expects to experience a future where multi-touch technology becomes a standard way to interact with applications, particularly for graphic manipulation and even gaming. While Maxwell didn’t get a summer internship on the iPhone team “this” year, has received coverage on Ars Technica and the local NBC news station. Not bad for a high school student.

Many bloggers have become powerful, given the popularity of their blogs. Some have become citizen journalists - citizens who play “an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news.” But with millions reading their words through a medium that seems to give equal weight to traditional journalism, what does this mean for journalism, and for the code of ethics that journalists traditionally understand? Jennifer McClure is the founder and executive director of the Society for New Communications Research, a nonprofit think tank focused on the study of advanced communication tools.

William Borghetti, founder and CEO of Sendside Networks, is no stranger to big ideas–he sold his last startup, Campus Pipeline, to Sungard after automating inefficient “stand-in-line” processes at Universities. Now, in the same way FedEx revolutionized traditional mail with overnight delivery, Sendside Networks aims to provide an entirely new way for individuals and organizations to interact and transact electronically. Borghetti and team see a future where businesses replace paper, postage, and delivery time. Instead Borghetti expects businesses to offer an exchange of rich, interactive messages, documents, even full-blown web applications in a trusted messaging environment free of spam, fraud, and phishing scams.

Borghetti’s shares the story with Brad Baldwin from Rocky Mountain Voices and explains why Sendside created an entirely new technology offering for sensitive and confidential communication. Sendside believes SMTP and “bolt-on” solutions (like encryption) just can’t extend SMTP’s life. To protect its vision, Sendside created an IP arsenal filing 16 patents.

Want to send or receive secure messages with complete tracking and guaranteed retraction–even after someone opens it? Sendside Networks opens for public sign-up April 3, 2008.

Happy Lunar New Year! February 7, 2008 begins the year of the Rat, the first year of the Chinese zodiac, a time of activity and renewal. Today we’ll take you on a quick tour of lunar new year basics, factoids, and food traditions. It is said that this is a good year to make a fresh start, and after the year we’ve had, we couldn’t agree more! As uncertified joy practitioners, we here at Freshtopia.net love a good reason to celebrate and eat some delicious food. So why not wear a little red, do a spot of cleaning (a lunar new year tradition), bring some fresh blossoms into your home and enjoy some healthy, auspicious fruits and vegetables?

In addition to tossing a little green, Tanja put together a wonderful, earthy, spicy parsnip noodle salad for this episode. We’ll be putting the recipe in the next edition of the Freshtopian, so if you haven’t already signed up, do so by entering your preferred address in the field at the site’s upper-right.

DirectPointe has established itself by offering great support to organizations who are looking for a partner to manage the technology they need to grow their business. DirectPointe manages the entire computing lifecycle, including procurement, deployment, management, protection and support, so customers have one company to handle all their computing needs–at a set monthly fee.

With a enterprise platform of services defined and running for small and medium businesses, Proper sees the opportunity to take these same computing services to the consumer market. By tapping into Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who have an existing relationship with customers, DirectPointe can offer their services as an add-on revenue product or through a private-label service.

Know one of those guys who is always acting like he’s strumming the air guitar while listening to music? Well then this $29.99 toy is the perfect gift, the Guitar Hero Air Guitar Rocker.

Not only is George a sales guy working the CES floor, he’s also an accomplished air guitarist capable of riffing just like Tony Iommi or Eddie Van Halen. The Air Guitar Rocker comes with 10 tracks that are loaded on a cartridge — certainly a model to support expansion for new genres or additional songs. Take the special pick and wave it in front of the Air Guitar Rocker’s Flying V belt buckle and out screams the distorted guitars. Match your strumming to the correct tempo, and you’ll play a perfect “More Than A Feeling” solo, just like Boston’s Barry Gooudreau.

It should come as no surprise that their conference phone products for the desktop and individuals wouldn’t include significant technology enhancements that set them apart from the “el’cheapo” models you see on eBay. With full-duplexing, noise canceling, noise reduction, high-quality microphones and industrial design to enhance a voice, ClearOne products pack the best in audio technology.

Brad Baldwin learns about ClearOne from Kurt Olsen during the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Olsen shows off the Chat 50, which lets the mobile executive place calls via her cellphone or plug into a laptop via USB for Skype or softphone use.

When it comes to email continuity and message availability in times of a network outage or as part of a disaster recovery plan, the small and medium business needs what large organizations spec–but they need it at an affordable price point. Cemaphore Systems has created an email continuity and content management solution for SMBs base on Microsoft Exchange that keeps email flowing and stored messages available in a crisis.

Tyrone Pike, President and CEO of Cemaphore, talks with Brad Baldwin about defining the right mix of enterprise-class features for small and medium businesses. Pike also talks about challenges and best practices for email continuity and the hole he sees in the market to provide the same service to companies with just a few mailboxes.

SMBs can leverage Cemaphore MailShadow for as few as 25 up to as many as 50,000 mailboxes. Mail can fail over to Cemaphore within minutes of an outage to keep email up and running. Cemaphore also supports mobile devices that we’ve all come to rely on when traveling. When organizations migrate or upgrade to a new version of Exchange, MailShadow helps out. Cemaphore has built a deep expertise in Microsoft Exchange transaction technology, including being Microsoft’s first Reference Licensee of the Outlook-Exchange Transport Protocol specification (formerly MAPI).

Daines was the first to create the 100 megabit Ethernet Switch when he worked as a consultant for 3Com and Bob Metcalfe. Later, Daines leveraged his experience to push data 10 times faster to create the first Gigabit Switch.

Daines was the first to graduate in Computer Science at Brigham Young University, and played a major role in defining the programs and curriculum for future graduates. After sharing his knowledge as a professor, Daines went on to work at IBM and HP. Later he founded or co-founded a number of businesses centered on Ethernet, including Grand Junction Networks (acquired by Cisco), Packet Engines (acquired by Alcatel), World Wide Packets, and Linux Networx.

I’m so sick of getting my utility bill and seeing that a huge majority of my money goes to pay for energy from Natural Gas and Nuclear (and in many places in the US, Coal). I want my money to go towards renewables and I’m not the only one. Many communities, including San Francisco and Oakland are petitioning and passing legislation for more choice in their energy purchasing. The movement is called Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) or Community Choice Energy. This type of legislation would not take down big corporations like PG&E, but would work with their existing infrastructure to deliver energy from sources chosen by the community. This would allow citizens to put their money towards more sustainable and renewable options and not have to wait around for the private companies to decide when to start investing in these technologies. As you’ll hear Rory Cox of PacificEnvironment.org say:

PG&E gets about half of its electricity from domestically sourced natural gas. The plan that PG&E is pushing right now is to import natural gas from abroad…most likely…from the former Soviet Union and The Middle East. It would require a whole brand, new fossil fuel energy infrastructure. We’d rather see those billions spent on clean energy.

When will it end? When will companies stop thinking that it is ok to continue to invest in finite resources? When communities stop relying on them to make energy choices for the people. For more info on Community Choice Aggregation, check out Local Clean Energy and Local Government Commission’s CCA page.
