The Reboot: Rhythm Games at E3 2008

Several rhythm games made their debut at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. The genre has gained popularity and developers have demonstrated the ability to create different styles of gameplay, from the complexity of Guitar Hero to the simplicity of Wii Music. In episode of The Reboot, host Rio Pesino previews some of the latest rhythm games shown at E3, including Wii Music, Rock Band 2 and Samba De Amigo.

New screens of what looks like Sony’s answer to Xbox Live were leaked over the Internet this week. Rumor has it that the Playstation 3’s next firmware update will include a trophy “reward” system and gamercards. Also, in this episode of The Reboot, with host Rio Pesino, a Los Angeles-based production company dismisses its lawsuit against Nintendo, another Playstation Phone rumor hits the Web, and a new survey says the average gamer spends $30,000 on video games.

The Reboot: Sonic Unleashed

In this episode of The Reboot, Sonic the Hedgehog fans went nuts after several screenshots and a video trailer of the blue-haired hero’s latest adventure, Sonic Unleashed, were leaked online. SEGA Europe later confirmed that the game will come out this year. In other gaming news, Sony and Harmonix were hit with lawsuits this week and a Super Famicom console signed by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto fetches thousands of dollars on Ebay.

A record 18,000 people attended this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. The five-day event featured 400 sessions, the GDC career pavilion, keynotes by Microsoft’s John Schappert and Ray Kurzweil and other GDC-related events including an evening with Will Wright and Video Games Live. In this episode of The Reboot, host Rio Pesino gives his take on some of the highlights of this year’s event, including Logitech’s new GT5 Prologue racing wheel, Dark Sector and Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds.

Facebook Status Update

Last October, Microsoft invested $240 million in Facebook, suddenly placing Facebook’s value at a lofty $15 billion. Now, we see that revenues for 2007 came to around $150 million, while expenses still leave the company with a negative cash flow that could be as high as $150 million next year.

Microsoft’s recent move to acquire Yahoo!, which began with a telephone call from Microsoft CEO Steven A. Ballmer to Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang (a call that Ballmer later claimed was “definitely not a courtesy call”) prompted us to revisit the Facebook/Microsoft relationship - what it means for Facebook, and what Microsoft might have been thinking last Fall.

As Facebook moves to launch versions in Spanish, with more languages coming soon, analysts are looking again at the juggernaut, guessing about whether breaking into languages will erode its power as a single network around the world. Meanwhile, widgets and applications continue to proliferate, and Microsoft’s role in aiding advertising at Facebook continues to be a work in progress.

Forrester Research senior analyst (and former host of PodTech’s own Web Strategy show) Jeremiah Owyang speaks with PodTech’s Jason Lopez about Facebook’s evolving business.

GM Provoq’s Audience at CES

During the keynote address at CES, GM Chairman Rick Wagoner unveiled the company’s newest fuel-cell concept vehicle on the E-Flex platform and the first vehicle introduction ever at CES, the Cadillac Provoq. Featuring GM’s fifth generation fuel cell technology, the Provoq includes a solar roof-top panel to power onboard accessories, an active front grille with louvers that close at freeway speeds to enhance aerodynamics and left and right fender-mounted charging ports.

Wrap-Up News From IDF: Virtual Worlds and the 3D Internet

Users are looking for a richer, more cinematic experience from the Internet, according to Justin Rattner, Intel chief technology officer and director, Corporate Technology Group. Rattner gave the final keynote of the Fall IDF in San Francisco, focusing on virtual worlds, which are evolving into what he referred to as the “3-D Internet,” in a keynote titled, “Research and Development: Virtual Worlds - The Rise of the 3D Internet.”

Rattner, who spoke with PodTech’s Michael Johnson to give a preview of the Fall IDF, wrapped up the annual developer conference by acknowledging Wired Magazine’s prediction that, as social media and user-generated content hit the mainstream at the same time as the rise of broadband and increased connectivity (and mobility), the coming year could see 60 million participants in online virtual worlds.

Rattner was also joined onstage by Greg Nuyens, CEO of Qwaq, who demoed virtual worlds for the enterprise. Outside of business applications, virtual surgery (especially as a training tool) suggests that realistic virtual environments are already a significant force in some communities.

The larger message that Rattner left the crowd with was that the computing power that will be necessary to deliver this rich 3-D experience will have to be substantial, especially given the demand that real time or “frame rate” visual experience for the 3D Web will demand.

That platform has several hundred thousand users and has generated more than five million calls to mobile devices.

A Day In The Life of A Lifecaster

This week on The Vloggies Show, Irina tries lifecasting for a day… and asks Jackson West, “who needs editing when you can stream live?” And the Mommy Vlogger struggles to manage her uber difficult hyperactive child… It’s tough being a parent. But on a more serious note, the killings at Virgnia Tech marked a national tragedy, which raised many questions around citizen journalism and mainstream media. The news quickly spread through blogs and online social networking sites and video shot on camera phones was used by mainstream media to report on the event. These kids are so wired that they were able to report on the news first-hand and more quickly than mainstream media. There is a generational divide that now exists between traditional media and social media, raising questions surrounding ethics and accuracy in reporting, as well as authority. It is no longer about an authoritative voice telling the people what is news and how they should view it, people are now able to report on events themselves and then share their opinions with their peers who then collectively form a perspective.
