When Intel’s research teams think about the future of computing - from mobile devices with near-limitless functionality to technology for the developing world to virtual worlds and advanced robotics, they are literally mapping our future (a future that could include, for example, a cafe table with networking ability). In this podcast preview of the 2008 Research@Intel Day, to be held at the Computer History Museum in the heart of Silicon Valley, we hear from some of Intel’s key players when it comes to the next generations of technology. Hear what Intel Research is focusing on now from Andrew Chien, vice president, corporate technology group and director of Intel Research; Intel Chief Technology Officer and Director of the Corporate Technology Group Justin Rattner; and Eric Brewer, director, Intel Research Berkeley.

Research Day is a chance to check in Intel on the future impacts that its advanced chip technologies will have on human health, mobility, innovation and, of course, computing - from Terascale architecture, software and programming issues to visual computing challenges.

You can hear more from Andrew Chien, here talking about essential computing, “the vision that drives Intel Research.” Justin Rattner shares some thoughts on virtual words as a precursor to the 3D Internet, and Eric Brewer, also a professor of comptuer science at the University of California, Berkeley, talks about how research from his Berkeley lab could lead to better technologies for the developing world.

The communications industry is experiencing the explosion of the “Me-We” phenomenon! Customers want “Me” services that are personalized, easy to use and focused on their needs. At the same time they want what we call the “We” experience, access to their friends and their social communities, such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. So how can Service providers address these new market dynamics and user trends, grow their revenue, create value, and retain customer stickiness? John Giere, Chief Marketing Officer, Alcatel-Lucent explains how the Service Delivery Environment (SDE) is the answer for creating the “Me” network for the “We” experience.

Listen to John Giere address:
* Key findings on user-trends from current market studies and analysis.
* Enterprise applicability of the “Me” network for the “We” experience.
* Opportunities and challenges to creating a “Me/We” network.
* Benefits of embracing an SDE for the “Me/We” experience.

These “Emerging Compute Models” are creating a lot of buzz, but also a lot of confusion in the IT community. That’s why this video podcast focuses on Intel’s Emerging Compute Model Forum. Jason Davidson, technical evangelist for the forum, says IT shops are experimenting with new ways to deliver applications and operating systems, but there’s no consensus on the best model, or models, to use.

In this podcast, Davidson and his colleagues Mike Ferron-Jones, marketing manager for Intel’s Emerging Compute Models program, and Chuck Brown, who directs the program, lay out the basic questions IT managers need to ask before choosing new compute models, discuss some of the pros and cons of different models, and preview some Intel and industry developments in the ECM space.

San Francisco-based blueEnergy provides sustainable energy services to isolated communities in Nicaragua. Mathias Craig, executive director and chairman of the board of the nonprofit corporation, was on-hand last year to receive the prestigious Accenture Economic Development Award at the Tech Museum Awards, presented by Aplied Materials. He spoke to PodTech for this video podcast, live at the Tech Museum.

blueEnergy brings electrification to remote regions by building power systems that convert energy from wind turbines to battery power. Their efforts have brought lighting and refrigeration to towns along the Caribbean coast on Nicaragua, where less than 20 percent of the population has ready access to electricity. Their systems are built from scratch, relying on local labor that ends up providing training of local laborers, increasing skills and local economic opportunities, while providing a critical necessity for continued economic development through electricity.

Long before his efforts in Nicaragua earned him and his growing company high-profile status as one of CNN’s “Community Crusader” 2007 Heroes, Craig and his brother were aware of the need for electricity in rural Nicaragua. Their mother, a linguist, spent time in the remote region, where only about 20 percent of the settlements have electrification.

Check out video of the award presentation at the Tech Awards, as well as links to lots of coverage of blueEnergy’s efforts. And of course, check out Mathias’s blog, on socialedge.org.

With Internet bandwidth demand doubling each year, broadcast media, IPTV, and new user-generated YouTube-style video are culprits exacerbating the problem. This is where <a href="http://www.brin.com/"Broadcast International and their new CodecSys offering can help reduce bandwidth for video applications by 50% or more, including High Definition (HD).

For the lay person, digital video is created with a video codec that encodes and compresses a stream of information. There are numerous codecs, each offering its own benefit and/or tradeoffs for visual or audio quality and file size.

Unlike traditional systems that force a single codec, CodecSys runs each frame of video past a collection of the codecs and determines which codec is best for that particular frame or series of frames. Exploiting attributes of multiple codecs, CodecSys can reduce bandwidth needs by 50-75%. Since it’s a software solution, new codecs can easily be incorporated into the system.

Broadcast International CEO Rod Tiede talks with Brad Baldwin about CodecSys and their recent demo with IBM at the 2007 IBC Expo in Amsterdam on the new BladeCenter QS20 “Cell Blade”.

Why is it that when raw-food health gurus go on national television, talking about all the wonderful soups, rich entrees, and magical desserts you can have on a raw food diet, so often they end up handing over to the excited and anticipating host a glass full of green glop? (see video here, and here for examples) The green smoothie; almost invariably it’s met with a nervous stare, and followed promptly by an ick face upon tasting. We could make Cacao Pistachio Florentine, Portobello Burgers, or Curried Chocolate Pudding, but instead, in a moment of mindless passion, we make green smoothies. I say we because we at Freshtopia too have made this mistake. Check out first Green Smoothie episode here, and check out our old-timey stylings.

It’s an easy mistake to make. Once you get on the green smoothie train, you tend to ride it all the way to happy town. I don’t really know what that means. The point is, often once people get into the GS, they tend to really get into the GS. It can be easy to forget that not everyone is so keen on the taste of pulverized kale and celery right out of the starting gate. It is not a transition food.

There are exceptions. On a recent episode of Oprah, Dr. Memet Oz presented Ms. Winfrey with a bright green concoction that she was pleased to receive. Her response upon tasting, “It’s like a glass of fresh!”

Our green smoothie episode garnered us our first video response. Our friends Steelee and Jessica gave our first smoothie a try, and were less than enthused about it. Fair enough, I wasn’t so jazzed at my first either. In time the body adjusts to the taste of more punchy, alkaline drinks, but it’s a good idea to start with a more accessible smoothie. So, if you’re up for giving it a shot, toss together the recipe below. As you’ll see, it’s so good even a child will like it!

Green Smoothie 2.0:
Serves 1-2

1 ripe banana
1 Cup mango, chopped
1-2 Cups fresh spinach
Water as necessary
2 ice cubes
1 Tbspn flax oil, optional

Blend as long as necessary. Make it as smooth as possible. Enjoy.

The primary difference? More fruit, less (and less bitter) greens. Give it a shot… and send us your video comments!

What is a transistor and how do the hundreds of millions of them work on a processor not much larger than a postage stamp? Meet Haf the little frog who learns about a big change in technology. Transistors are the essential building block inside all modern electronics devices. Yet they keep shrinking, this time thanks to Intel’s hafnium-based high-k and metal gate technology. At 45nm, these transistors are so tiny that you could fit more than 300 million of them onto the head of a pin and more than 400 million of them will power Intel’s soon-to-be-released chips. See it here. Thanks to graphic artist and director Geoff McFetridge who created the film.

For your weekend watch, here is the final part of “Keen on Politics,” the YouTube debate between Andrew Keen, Steve Gillmor, Tony Perkins, Robert Scoble, Dan Farber, Keith Teare, and Heather Harde.

Here, CEO Chris Yeh and marketing assistant Mary-Jo Montreynaud, tell me what the latest is at Ustream and give me a preview of the new features which will be live today.

I caught up with Tim O’Reilly of O’Reilly Media at TiECon 2007, where he spoke about Web 2.0 and chaired a panel discussion on Web 2.0 with Navin Ashwin of BitTorrent; Alex Welch of Photobucket and Jaideep Singh of Spock. In this interview we talk extensively about Web 2.0 and what it means, and what are the defining characteristics of these companies. How do you harness the intelligence of users? Tim points out that Web 2.0 is not dominated by software, but by data, and that is a key differentiator of a Web 2.0 company. He points out, “The network is the platform,” and on the network the rules are different. Tune in to find out what Tim has to say about Web 2.0, a term he helped coin a couple of years ago.
