As a concept, “unified communications” has been around for awhile. It can mean anything from bringing all business communications into a single, seamless user experience to bringing global collaboration and conferencing technologies onto the same basic platform as traditional voice and text communications systems. It’s one of the most exciting ways in which technology is reshaping the corporate environment, and the implications for the enterprise are significant, ranging from greener, more sustainable business practices to drastically reduced friction, latency and overload of existing communications systems.

In this podcast, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Systems Marketing, Siemens Enterprise Communications Mark Straton predicts that the UC feature set will become the new baseline standard. Straton says that unified communications, as we currently know it, will will merge with voice, video, and mobility solutions to create comprehensive but modular UC solutions, with the lines between business applications like email, CRM, ERP, communications platforms, and communications devices blurring or disappearing completely.

Join BearingPoint Managing Director Chris Estes and Manager Eileen Perrin in understanding the UDAP Legislation. In May 2008, the Federal Reserve, OTC and NCUA proposed a regulation under section 5(a) of the Federal Trade Commission Act, affectionately known as UDAP (Unfair and Deceptive Acts and Practices). The proposed regulation addresses overdraft processing and credit card activities.

This regulation will ultimately create pressure on financial institution profitability, resulting in lost fee and interest revenue and increased risk management challenges. UDAP will also require costly modifications to systems and processes throughout the account lifecycle. The financial impact on each institution depends on existing policies & practices. If a financial institution has not yet calculated the financial impact of this regulatory change on their income statement, BearingPoint has created a proprietary model to perform a high level calculation that is directionally accurate.

BearingPoint has created an organizational impact assessment tool to assists our clients in identifying the processes that impact them specifically. Organizations need to align their budgets and their resources to be prepared to support UDAP compliance efforts in 2009. Every institution should start investigating revenue enhancement opportunities and BearingPoint is here to ensure you’re fully equipped when this regulation becomes law.

The Core i7 microprocessor (built on Intel’s Nehalem microarchitecture) represents a major advance in computing to enable chips to handle more data. In this video podcast, Ronak Singhal, a lead architect on Nehalem, says the chip design is an overhaul–the internal core has been changed significantly for added performance, as well as for better energy efficiency.

“We’ve put in features such as Turbo Boost Technology, our integrated power gate, an integrated memory controller, and Hyper-Threading,” he says. The effort took about five years and required thousands of engineers.

“Building this microprocessor brings a lot of people together, like architects, micro architects, the design teams,” commented Rani Borkar, vice president of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. “As you get into the development phases, working with the process technology, it’s a mind-boggling effort that requires a lot of teamwork across the board.”

This video takes you into Intel’s labs to meet some of the researchers behind the Core i7.

In this podcast, which features highlights from the webinar Minimizing the Risk of Information Security Breaches, Best Practices for SOA Governance and Compliance, experts in the field grapple with today’s data security questions. One of the moderators, Andreas Antonopoulos, senior vice president and founding partner of Nemertes Research, says that conventional thinking is to keep outsiders out and insiders in, because outsiders cannot be trusted and insiders can. “Unfortunately, that’s not the case anymore,” says Antonopoulos. “Not only can you not trust insiders, but also many of your insiders are roaming around all over the world connecting through mobile systems.” So, what makes a good SOA platform? Dutta Satadip, product manager at HP Software’s SOA Center joins us to discuss. And for case use scenarios, we turn to Dr. Clifford Grossner, of security solutions marketing at Alcatel-Lucent.

It was announced by Intel Executive Vice President Pat Gelsinger at IDF 2008, and it was the topic of many spirited industry conversations, as well. In this video podcast, Intel’s Mike Moreno speaks with IBM’s Robert Zuber about what the news means for IT managers, and what IBM is doing to help reduce the size of the IT footprint in the enterprise. They also mention new benchmarks around database and virtualization.

As high definition video conferencing takes hold in the enterprise, it improves communication in clear ways, as well as in some subtle ones. The impact on the boardroom is one thing: groups and executives now come together for effective virtual meetings that save money and valuable energy resources. But new technologies are bringing that value and efficiency one step further: by bringing the collaborative video conferencing technology out of the conference room and out to the desktop, they’re turning video communication into the new voice communication. “Video killed the radio star,” is one way that Wayne Seifried might put it. Seifried is the director of Global Portfolio Marketing, Enterprise Mobility and Video Solutions with Siemens Enterprise Communications.

OpenScape Video, from Siemens Enterprise Communication is bringing some of the highest quality video at the lowest possible bandwidth to desktop users throughout the enterprise. The result is something that Seifried calls the “Democratization of HD Video Conferencing,” because with OpenScape, video is part of the unified communication platform, integrating with internal phone systems to allow maximum participation from users anywhere in the company, and pretty much anywhere in the world.

In this podcast, Seifried discusses the changes that high definition video conferencing have already made for all industries, ranging from medicine (where telemedicine allows specialists in one location the real-time ability to assist in medical situations in other, often very remote, locales), to law and even education. He explains why, while the value of video over voice communication is clear, the technology that continues to evolve, bringing high quality video to more users for less cost means great opportunity for the enterprise.

Intel’s Xeon 7400-series processors posted record performance results, in time for this announcement from Intel Executive Vice President Pat Gelsinger at IDF 2008, in San Francisco. This podcast includes the IDF announcement of those Xeon performance results, which marked the first time the industry has seen 1.2 million database transactions per minute on an 8-slot IBM server.

The Intel Xeon 7400 series (Dunnington), is the “final member of the Penryn family” — a family that Gelsinger notes shares Intel’s 45nm technology.

The server virtualization product, in conjunction with Intel’s VT hardware-assisted virtualization technology, provides simplified resource management to increase IT efficiency. In this podcast, Jeff Woolsey, senior program manager at Microsoft focused on Microsoft Virtualization, and Intel Microsoft Alliance Manager Joakim Lialias discuss the specific benefits of using Hyper-V technology with Intel’s VT virtualization.
