EnerNoc, the company they created on the idea of “demand response” essentially created new generation capacity by reducing demand. In less than six years, EmerNoc has grown to a company with a market cap of over $600 million, over 200 employees and a successful IPO that raised over $100 million.

I’m so sick of getting my utility bill and seeing that a huge majority of my money goes to pay for energy from Natural Gas and Nuclear (and in many places in the US, Coal). I want my money to go towards renewables and I’m not the only one. Many communities, including San Francisco and Oakland are petitioning and passing legislation for more choice in their energy purchasing. The movement is called Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) or Community Choice Energy. This type of legislation would not take down big corporations like PG&E, but would work with their existing infrastructure to deliver energy from sources chosen by the community. This would allow citizens to put their money towards more sustainable and renewable options and not have to wait around for the private companies to decide when to start investing in these technologies. As you’ll hear Rory Cox of PacificEnvironment.org say:

PG&E gets about half of its electricity from domestically sourced natural gas. The plan that PG&E is pushing right now is to import natural gas from abroad…most likely…from the former Soviet Union and The Middle East. It would require a whole brand, new fossil fuel energy infrastructure. We’d rather see those billions spent on clean energy.

When will it end? When will companies stop thinking that it is ok to continue to invest in finite resources? When communities stop relying on them to make energy choices for the people. For more info on Community Choice Aggregation, check out Local Clean Energy and Local Government Commission’s CCA page.

Gary Starr, Chairman of Electric Vehicle Company, Zap! talks with John Ince about the challenges facing widespread consumer acceptance of electric vehicles. Starr points out that in regions like China and Europe, where the government has actively promoted electric vehicles, the adoption rate by consumers is soaring. Starr believes that as consumer awareness about environmental issues grows, that the major automakers will start to reduce their resistance to electric vehicles and the mass adoption will soon follow.

I love this interview with Scott Elrod, manager of the hardware systems group at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC, for short). PARC, under the creative and enthusiastic leadership of Elrod, has ventured into the clean technology area. Recently, PARC worked together with the start-up SolFocus on the development of a new type of solar PV system, which is as effective as existing solar PV technology but requires a much smaller volume of silicon per unit area.

In this first interview, we discuss solar energy, PARC’s interests in this area, and Elrod’s pet projects.

In Europe, consumers have demonstrated their willingness to “Shop their Values,” resulting in an accelerated adoption of Clean Technologies in the marketplace. But consumers in the United States still lag behind. What is the role of the consumer in forcing “Big Oil” and other incumbents in the Clean Tech space to move over to new, non-polluting and energy efficient technologies? Two of the most astute observers of investment in Clean tech, Paul Deninger, vice chairman of Jefferies and Company Inc., and Erik Straser, partner of Mohr Davidow Ventures, discuss what it will take for the incumbents to change their ways.

The Solar Living Institute, home of Real Goods (one of the first Green Catalogs), is like a big, green playground. The 12-acre plot was developed as a demonstration site for renewable and clean technologies like solar and wind power, green building and permaculture. We were excited to be able to spend some time on the campus while participating in a workshop on how to build an electric vehicle. Although the workshop turned out to be a wee bit overwhelming, we felt we got a pretty good primer into the world of electric vehicles. That said, we encourage y’all to take a workshop or class on some of these green ideas. Meeting people and gathering resources for getting started on this stuff is a good motivator for really making change.

AeroVironment is a Monrovia, Calif.-based pioneer in the conception and development of alternative energy vehicles, having helped to develop the solar-powered GM Sunraycer and the all-electric GM Impact, a prototype for General Motors’ EV-1 electric automobile, and others. If you watched the movie, Who Killed the Electric Car?, their at-home electric vehicle battery charging appliance was prominently featured. So it’s no surprise that they were quite disappointed when the EV-1 project was cancelled by GM after spending so much time, money and energy had been spent to develop the technology. But all was not lost, as it helped serve the electric forklift and airport vehicle business for them. Last week, the company reached another milestone with their fast charge system for electric vehicles, the AV-900, by demonstrating for representatives of the California Air Resources Board the capability of fully charging a lithium chemistry electric vehicle battery pack in less than ten minutes. (The battery pack was developed by Altair Nanotechnologies, designed for use in the Phoenix Motorcar Sport Utility Truck, and at 35kWh (kilowatt-hour), it’s designed to allow the truck to travel more than 100 miles on a single charge.) Joining me to discuss this accomplishment is Charlie Botsford, who does business development for AV’s Energy Technology Center.

Rohit Agarwal is the founder and CEO of techTribe Networks, a software company that enables current and future professionals to connect with others to enhance their careers.

Rohit recently co-authored a book along with Patricia Brown, titled, How Innovators Connect.

“How Innovators Connect” is an attempt to showcase innovation through the experiences of more than 40 successful innovators in Silicon Valley and India. Innovation is a process that demands connectivity, and cannot be performed in a vacuum. Based on numerous conversations, the authors discovered that each of the successful innovators shared connectivity traits. Although they all had different approaches, there were common sets of principles. The book explores the core principles of connectivity that form a framework for innovation, and contains learning from:

Jawad Ansari (Miven Ventures), Jan Baan (Baan, Cordys), Eric Billingsley (eBay), Marc Benioff (Salesforce.com), Drew Clark (IBM), Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande (Sycamore), Tom Erickson (Systinet), Stuart Evans (Cambridge University), Ashish Gupta (Junglee), Umang Gupta (Keynote, Gupta Corp.), Mark Hanny (IBM), Dan Harden (FrogDesign, Whipsaw), Mark Hoffman (CommerceOne, Sybase), James Hong (HOTorNOT), Bradley Horowitz (Yahoo), Subrah Iyer (WebEx), Kiran Karnik (NASSCOM), Guy Kawasaki (Apple), Emmett B. Keefe III (iRise), Jerry Kennelly (Riverbed), Joe Kraus (Excite, JotSpot), Audrey MacLean (NET), Phaneesh Murthy (iGate), Ram Mynampati (Satyam), Mark Lewis (EMC), M.R. Rangaswami (Sand Hill Group), Rajeev Samant (Sula Wines), Manoj Saxena (Webify, Exterprise), Ram Shriram (Google), Ashmeet Sidana (Foundation Capital), Vishal Sikka (SAP), David Skok (Silverstream), Louis Teto (Taleo), and many more.

For Rohit, the book is not a commercial effort, but part of his passion for spreading the message of innovation in India.
