Here’s one student that takes the “Science Fair” to the next level. Bridger Maxwell, a high school student at Utah County Academy of Sciences (UCAS) decided to create a multi-touch table for his Science Fair entry–kinda like an iPhone screen, and Microsoft Surface on a budget.

The multi-touch experience allows for object movement, rotation, growing and shrinking, and even multi-hand, multi-person use. Inspired by movies like Minority Report, Maxwell leverages Apple OS X, code developed during Google Summer of Code called Open Touch, and his own code. The table, made from plexiglass and a dissembled Acer monitor, uses infrared light emitting diodes and an IR camera to detect and transmit fingertip motions as inputs.

Maxwell also expects to experience a future where multi-touch technology becomes a standard way to interact with applications, particularly for graphic manipulation and even gaming. Maxwell submitted his code back to the community at code.google.com/p/corkboard/ and has received coverage on Ars Technica and a local NBC news story.

Maxwell also expects to experience a future where multi-touch technology becomes a standard way to interact with applications, particularly for graphic manipulation and even gaming. While Maxwell didn’t get a summer internship on the iPhone team “this” year, has received coverage on Ars Technica and the local NBC news station. Not bad for a high school student.

In this podcast, The Register’s Tim Phillips speaks with Intel’s Shesha Krishnapura about developers’ adoption of multi-core technology. Krishnapura sees that, while multi-core processors have been around for awhile, now is an especially exciting time for multi-threaded software, given the uptake in industry and the increasingly urgent need for the software that will help to realize the higher performance potential of multi-core. Intel is leading the effort to adopt with key software packages and developer tools that make it easier to write multi-threaded code.

To find out what Intel is doing for the community, check out the community site, “Threading for Multi-Core Developer Community.” There, Intel and the community share tools and expertise with featured articles, threading analysis tools, industry benchmarks, training, and access to Intel developers and experts, for training and best practices information.

Krishnapura is a principal engineer in the Intel Platform and Design Capability Engineering group, driving the internal engineering of High Performance Computing solutions optimized for Tapeout and Design Computing. As an architect of Intel Architecture migration program for Electronic Design Automation, Shesha is responsible for enabling IA-based optimization and adoption in EDA market by enabling application vendors and strategically influencing world-wide semiconductor customers for best-in-class design compute solutions.

Some have become citizen journalists - citizens who play “an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news.” But with millions reading their words through a medium that seems to give equal weight to traditional journalism, what does this mean for journalism, and for the code of ethics that journalists traditionally understand? Jennifer McClure is the founder and executive director of the Society for New Communications Research, a nonprofit think tank focused on the study of advanced communication tools. She spoke with Marketing Voices host Jennifer Jones about the status of citizen journalism today.

This year’s Spring IDF, in Shanghai, brought the global community of Intel developers to one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, to discuss one of the most rapidly-changing technologies, and the incredible impact that all of that change is bound to have. Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, referred to Intel’s efforts broadly as “architecture for life.” If it sounds ambitious, it is.

The speed of change in the software world is daunting. In his own keynote, SVP and General Manager of the Ultra Mobility Group at Intel, Anand Chandrasekher, noted that everyone is trying to “unleash the Internet, unwire it, and make it go mobile.” Again, the words sound almost obvious, like common sense. They’re not.

It’s true that Intel specializes in bringing incredible advancements to technology on a tick-tock product development schedule that allows industries to grow and thrive. You can see in the matter of weeks and months that Intel’s efforts go from being rumor to being confirmed technological advances (like the recent Dunnington news) that the world is watching itself change in real time. It’s true that a lot of time at IDF in Shanghai was devoted to presentations on specific technologies, platforms and products.

We heard a lot more about Nehalem, about visual computing, about multithreaded CPUs (And just for fun, compare this detailed look at Intel’s sometimes-inscrutable codenames with a detailed look at those same codenames, from a slightly different perspective). Keynotes from Gelsinger and Chandrasekher, along with Software and Solutions Group General Manager and Intel Vice President Renee James and Intel’s Andrew Chien helped to clarify just how much more mobile our technology will allow us to be.

But always in the backdrop was Shanghai. In this video podcast, Jason Lopez connects the dots between Intel’s efforts to push technology past its limits and Shanghai’s amazing journey to pass its own.

The many online social media have become an important part of the marketing mix for many corporations and organizations. Whether it means listening to online conversations, participating in communities of enthusiasts, clients, consumers or social networks, or simply increasing transparency, understanding how social media can be made to work for you is key to building stronger brand engagement and loyalty. It’s also going to save you money. But how?

In this video podcast, Marketing Voices’ Jennifer Jones, and others, talk with industry insiders to find out how combining social media with the art of storytelling in blogs, wikis and podcasts will foster conversations, convert incremental audience, and ultimately increase audiences’ engagement with brands. How can you use social media to create a voice for your brand that resonates beyond your corporate Web site? How can syndication help move your brand’s voice to your audiences, and bring those audiences back to your brand?

These “Emerging Compute Models” are creating a lot of buzz, but also a lot of confusion in the IT community. That’s why this video podcast focuses on Intel’s Emerging Compute Model Forum. Jason Davidson, technical evangelist for the forum, says IT shops are experimenting with new ways to deliver applications and operating systems, but there’s no consensus on the best model, or models, to use.

In this podcast, Davidson and his colleagues Mike Ferron-Jones, marketing manager for Intel’s Emerging Compute Models program, and Chuck Brown, who directs the program, lay out the basic questions IT managers need to ask before choosing new compute models, discuss some of the pros and cons of different models, and preview some Intel and industry developments in the ECM space.

There’s a raw juice movement sweeping the nation. …as is seems to do from time to time. I remember my family briefly going through a similar craze when I was young. It seems to be a binge and purge business, there one minute, gone the next. This goes a long way toward explaining the impressive selection of juicers to be found in many suburbian rummage sale block parties.

Well, color me a bandwagoner, I’m hooked. For how long it will last, no one knows. Many folks in the raw food community are onboard already, such as Phillip, Heidi, and Kris, to name just a few. Last week I wrote about my favorite fresh juice, or more precisely, about its color. This week we’re showing how to make it. Without further ado, we give you… “The Director’s Cut.”
The Director’s Cut:

San Francisco-based blueEnergy provides sustainable energy services to isolated communities in Nicaragua. Mathias Craig, executive director and chairman of the board of the nonprofit corporation, was on-hand last year to receive the prestigious Accenture Economic Development Award at the Tech Museum Awards, presented by Aplied Materials. He spoke to PodTech for this video podcast, live at the Tech Museum.

blueEnergy brings electrification to remote regions by building power systems that convert energy from wind turbines to battery power. Their efforts have brought lighting and refrigeration to towns along the Caribbean coast on Nicaragua, where less than 20 percent of the population has ready access to electricity. Their systems are built from scratch, relying on local labor that ends up providing training of local laborers, increasing skills and local economic opportunities, while providing a critical necessity for continued economic development through electricity.

Long before his efforts in Nicaragua earned him and his growing company high-profile status as one of CNN’s “Community Crusader” 2007 Heroes, Craig and his brother were aware of the need for electricity in rural Nicaragua. Their mother, a linguist, spent time in the remote region, where only about 20 percent of the settlements have electrification.

Check out video of the award presentation at the Tech Awards, as well as links to lots of coverage of blueEnergy’s efforts. And of course, check out Mathias’s blog, on socialedge.org.

The trend right now is to create your own social network for your business. Why do that? A few reasons. First, it lets you build better relationships with your customers. Second, you can add value onto your products or services by having a community that’s supporting each other and
showing each other how to take your product or service further. Third, you might already have a community (like a newspaper or football team does) and you need a place for that community to hang out together. Anyway, here Pringo’s founder and CEO, Harvard Young, and President Gary Hall talk about the social networking business and how Pringo helps businesses with their social networking needs.

Hanging out with food justice foodies as of late, we’ve been hearing a similar idea that to encourage folks to think about where their food comes from and who controls it, they have to have a taste of ‘real food’. Real food meaning local, sustainable, fresh, no pesticides, delicious, colorful, home grown and cheap. Yes, this food can be affordable, especially if we’re not paying extra for it to get shipped thousands of miles and for the medical bills we will incur because of the processes and chemicals that will eventually make us sick and over weight. Thanks Bryant and Jason for inviting us over!

I’m so sick of getting my utility bill and seeing that a huge majority of my money goes to pay for energy from Natural Gas and Nuclear (and in many places in the US, Coal). I want my money to go towards renewables and I’m not the only one. Many communities, including San Francisco and Oakland are petitioning and passing legislation for more choice in their energy purchasing. The movement is called Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) or Community Choice Energy. This type of legislation would not take down big corporations like PG&E, but would work with their existing infrastructure to deliver energy from sources chosen by the community. This would allow citizens to put their money towards more sustainable and renewable options and not have to wait around for the private companies to decide when to start investing in these technologies. As you’ll hear Rory Cox of PacificEnvironment.org say:

PG&E gets about half of its electricity from domestically sourced natural gas. The plan that PG&E is pushing right now is to import natural gas from abroad…most likely…from the former Soviet Union and The Middle East. It would require a whole brand, new fossil fuel energy infrastructure. We’d rather see those billions spent on clean energy.

When will it end? When will companies stop thinking that it is ok to continue to invest in finite resources? When communities stop relying on them to make energy choices for the people. For more info on Community Choice Aggregation, check out Local Clean Energy and Local Government Commission’s CCA page.
