Not being social enough is a big problem for corporations trying to use social media. That’s what Jeremiah Owyang and his team at Forrester discovered in a new report. Forrester selected 16 firms across four industries and found only one company worthy of accolades. What makes BMW a social marketing winner? In part, it’s that the automobile manufacturer managed to avoid the most common pitfalls, which is still where most firms fell short. Some examples of those easy-to-make mistakes: creating marketing programs that aren’t self-fueling, that don’t encourage members to participate in conversations amongst themselves and that don’t include some amount of participation from the corporation, itself.

Jeremiah discusses his findings with Jennifer Jones in this Marketing Voices podcast.

The many online social media have become an important part of the marketing mix for many corporations and organizations. Whether it means listening to online conversations, participating in communities of enthusiasts, clients, consumers or social networks, or simply increasing transparency, understanding how social media can be made to work for you is key to building stronger brand engagement and loyalty. It’s also going to save you money. But how?

In this video podcast, Marketing Voices’ Jennifer Jones, and others, talk with industry insiders to find out how combining social media with the art of storytelling in blogs, wikis and podcasts will foster conversations, convert incremental audience, and ultimately increase audiences’ engagement with brands. How can you use social media to create a voice for your brand that resonates beyond your corporate Web site? How can syndication help move your brand’s voice to your audiences, and bring those audiences back to your brand?

Footnote.com is adding social media tools to The Vietnam Memorial, one of the most recognized memorials in Washington, D.C. For those who have visited the wall, you know finding names is not easy. Nor does a visit to the wall allow you to learn more about many people and heros who served.

Footnote.com’s new social media version of The Vietnam Memorial brings The Vietnam Memorial inside the comfort of your own home. By creating a searchable image of The Wall, now it’s easy to find friends, family or names. Once found, Footnote.com allows you to search the details about soldiers, post stories about fallen comrades and even upload pictures of service men and women. By adding social media to The Vietnam Memorial, the conversation about the individuals listed can continue and honor can be extended to those who fell while rendering service.

It started with an innocuous audio interview with the then-President of the Products and Technology Group at SAP AG, Shai Agassi. Then came Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz, sitting at a table with an umbrella. It wasn’t long before Scoble introduced us to Thomas Hawk (investment advisor by day, ubiquitous digital media creator by night). There was the Golden Gate Bridge walk (spread over three parts!), and then came pumpkins — lots of pumpkins. Somewhere between the Golden Gate Bridge and the pumpkin patch, conversations with entrepreneurs like b5media Founder and President Jeremy Wright and SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill.

There was lunch with Bill Gates and another lunch with Mark Cuban. We met folks from Salesforce and Zillow, SocialText, Retrevo and Maxthon. We met political bloggers and a presidential candidate on the campaign trail.

But one of our favorites? It’s an interview with Microsoft’s Gary Flake on Photosynth.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Robert Scoble is still the author of the incredibly popular tech geek blog, Scobleizer.com. He’s also the managing director over at FastCompany.tv, where ScobleShow editor and producer Rocky Barbanica is also now a senior producer.

Since that fateful first ScobleShow, Agassi has moved on to found Project Better Place, in order to pursue interests in alternative energy and climate change. Jonathan Schwartz is still at Sun, still blogging, and lots of the start-ups we met are still kicking around, some of them very successfully! It’s worth taking a few minutes to surf through the archives, or just wait to see what pops up in the Classic feed. Good for a few goofy laughs and a little insight into where we’ve been and where we might be going. Oh, and Thomas Hawk is still evangelizing for photo sharing and digital media, and still believes that the best pictures in the world have yet to be taken.

Intel’s smallest processor to date, built with it’s tiny 45nm transistors for a new wave of small, mobile Internet devices. The chip gets the name Intel Atom. There’s also Intel Centrino Atom, a combination of chip technologies for low cost, low power and high performing devices designed to bring better Internet experiences to wireless compute devices.

Intel’s Brian Fravel helped to announce Atom’s brand name on Sunday, followed by Bob Duffy and others. Outside of Intel, conversation continues. Most blog mentions highlight the tiny processor’s likeley impact on mobile internet devices. As Joel Hruska writes at Ars Technica, “The Atom architecture is intended to give Intel a foothold in handheld devices that have traditionally been the sole domain of very low-power RISC processors.” Noting that no Atom-enabled products have yet been announced, Yahoo! Tech’s Christopher Null predicts that “you should definitely expect some in the next few months.”

When the service launched earlier this month, news coverage highlighted the potential value to marketers who have been searching for effective ways to participate in discussions and debates online in communities where some of their most passionate potential consumers are already sharing ideas.

The bottom line for BuzzLogic customers, according to ClickZ, the largest resource of interactive marketing news, is that the social media universe can now be managed as one single channel. There is now a new ability to cut through the noise to the 10 or 20 most influential bloggers - a slight tweak on competitors’ offerings in that the focus is not necessarily on the most popular blogs, but specifically the most “influential.”

In his conversation with Jennifer Jones, CEO Crumpler says this conversation targeting ad system delivers more than two times the performance than what could be done just a few months ago. More coverage on the offering, as well as in-depth coverage on related stories, can be found at marketing news site Marketingvox.com.

How does Yahoo! access the power of the Internet on the mobile phone? They way a user uses Yahoo! on their desktop is vastly different from the way they use it on their mobile phones. Delivering a seamless, oneclick experience on the mobile phone is a key component of what Ojas Rege does at Yahoo!

Yahoo! mobile has two core goals: discovering information and communication with other people. For instance, there is Yahoo’s OneSearch for discovering information in your mobile. As VP of Yahoo’s global mobile products Ojas and his team work on delivering an indispensable experience for the mobile community around the world. This is not an easy task when you factor in the bewildering mix of phones, the cultural differences and other factors that influence the way way people use their mobile phones.

Tune back in for Part-2 of our conversation with Ojas.
