Intel’s Craig Barrett says that private companies can’t go it alone when trying to make a difference in developing markets, and neither can governments. In a visit to Malaysia, the chairman of the chip giant stopped off at Penang, where the company has committed itself to help local schools. Barrett, a former professor at Stanford University, is a big believer in education, especially in developing teachers. Barrett also appeared at the 16th World Congress on Information Technology where he delivered a keynote reaffirming his belief that real change can happen when governments and private industry team up.

In this video podcast PodTech producer Jason Lopez captured Barrett’s visits in Penang and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In this video podcast, Dr. Oren Shriki, a science teacher at the Israel Arts and Sciences Academy, speaks about Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair, taking place in Atlanta, May 11-16. (As excitement builds toward the event’s opening, you can follow along on a dedicated Intel ISEF blog.)

Many of the best young scientists from around the world will attend, selected through regional science fairs for a wide range of skills, from identifying and addressing important scientific challenges or questions to using organized and logical thought to reach conclusions. The participants in Intel ISEF are very likely to be tomorrow’s leaders in technology, medicine and health, agriculture, environmental science and engineering.

During Intel ISEF, their work will be judged by professional scientists who will look for gifted communicators with excellent foundational understanding in specific research and the scientific process.

No matter what the judges decide, however, participants in the annual event will benefit from meeting their peers from around the world, hearing from Nobel laureates and scientists involved in the same kinds of research as theirs, and also creating lasting memories, like those found on the blog of 2004 ISEF alum (and member of a Fourth Award-winning team) Jayson Reggie Obos.

Here’s more information about the science fair as well as a quick look at recent ISEF events, including the 2007 Intel ISEF in Albuquerque, N.M.

During the awards dinner, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett joked, after seeing the quality of work from the high school finalists in the the Intel Science Talent Search 2008, that he felt like burning his Ph.D. dissertation. But the depth of research practiced by the finalists is astonishing. The winner of the competition, Shivani Sud of Durham, N.C., says she will continue to develop her study of genomics and the prevention of recurring cancer. PodTech’s Jason Lopez prepared this podcast featuring all ten of the top finishers describing their projects.

Broadband connectivity is rapidly becoming a bottleneck issue for economic development around the world. As nations move into knowledge-based economies, an emphasis on information and communication technologies, or ICTs, is critical to addressing poverty and development concerns ranging from health and education to economic and industrial growth. Knowledge is the driving engine for economic growth, social development, cultural enrichment, and for political empowerment, according to Abdul Waheed Kahn, assistant director-general for communication and information at UNESCO. In this video podcast, he makes the case that enabling a knowledge workforce increasingly requires reliable access to information. As Intel’s John Davies explains, more and more, that means bringing broadband to parts of the world where even basic economic development remains a challenge. IICD Communication Coordinator Hilde Eugelink explains how even simple, relatively small investments in education can have a significant impact on communities and economies.

Hilde Eugelink is communication coordinator with the International Institute for Communication and Development and John Davies is vice president of Intel’s sales and marketing group and the general manager of Intel’s World Ahead initiative.

The Intel Science Talent Search culminates in Washington, D.C. this weekend. The high school science projects cover areas like engineering, math, physics, medicine and health, environmental science, zoology, and others. The research these students have engaged in is astonishing. Many projects will result in innovations, inventions, new treatments, and further research as students move on to college and into careers. Forty finalists from high schools around the U.S. will attend the 6-day event where as ten winners will be announced. In this podcast, PodTech’s Jason Lopez talks with two entrants who’ve developed new energy technologies, one which harnesses the electrical energy of microbes.

Real food meaning local, sustainable, fresh, no pesticides, delicious, colorful, home grown and cheap. Yes, this food can be affordable, especially if we’re not paying extra for it to get shipped thousands of miles and for the medical bills we will incur because of the processes and chemicals that will eventually make us sick and over weight. Thanks Bryant and Jason for inviting us over!

With the recent credit crisis that has made its way across our nation, more and more companies are demanding an advanced analytics capability in their organization. Advanced analytics requires highly skilled individuals who are proven to provide statistical models to predict future trends of a business. Through offshoring advanced analytics, an organization can provide its client with a cost efficient method to an advanced resource that has been proven to increase profitability and sales.

Finding qualified offshoring venues is easier than ever. Once a facility is determined, the organization begins robust project planning and security certification. More and more companies are turning to offshoring venues because of the lack of supply constraints. These venues are being formed in countries where there is an abundance of resources and a high educational status. Through offshoring, an organization has a pool of advanced resources they can choose from and at an affordable price.

The team, including Robert Shelton, Terry Hodgson and Stephanie Smith, designed tecnology to teach abstract mathematical concepts to blind and visually impaired students, opening up careers in science and technology to students who have traditionally been excluded by virtue of the predominantly visual representations used in those subjects.

MathTrax includes software that allows students to graph equations, interact with the data and understand it through text, tones and spoken language. In addition to removing barriers for the visually impaired, the software can deepen mathematical understanding for all styles of learners.

At this year’s Tech Museum Awards, presented by Applied Materials, the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education was among the Microsoft Education Award Laureates. The Institute founded the OER Commons with the goal of sifting through mountains of free information available online, using technology to evaluate and organize the most appropriate, most high-quality free online educational materials. Their interactive, open-source network aggregates exceptional materials and provides a social networking opportunity for users who want to share their experiences and outcomes. A virtual community of teachers and learners rates materials, tags them, creates blogs, and even offers edits and ideas.

Here, Lisa Petrides, president of the Institute, along with Vice President Thad Nodine, discuss the OER Commons site, already used in 194 countries and territories around the world.

In many countries in the developing world, cooking is a role assigned to women who tend open fires, sometimes inside their homes. In Guatemala, the respiratory illnesses, eye infections and severe burns that come from this reality seemed eminently avoidable to Donald O’Neal. With the intent of finding a safer way to cook, O’Neal developed the ONIL stove, using strong, inexpensive ceramic lining and a steel chimney, it is designed to suit the needs of traditional Guatemalan cooking, and for its impressive results — it saves 70 percent of the wood usually used for cooking, emits only 1/20th of the carbon monoxide and protects families from burns and other maladies associated with open fires and smoke — O’Neal was recognized as a 2007 Health Award Laureate at The Tech Museum Awards.

Nigeria’s education system is one of the targets of the UN’s Millenium Development Goals. Some of those goals are to reduce infant mortality, combat AIDS, malaria & other diseases, and of course improve education worldwide. The millennium goal for education is to ensure, by 2015, that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling. In Nigeria only about 6 out of 10 kids attends primary school. In the poorest bracket many children who do go to school start late in terms of their ages and end up chronically behind. Intel’s push to bring low cost laptops to school children in Nigeria is an effort to help the country meet the millenium development goals. PodTech’s Jason Lopez was in Abuja, Nigeria for Intel covering Chairman Craig Barrett’s visit and filed this podcast.

In a country marked by influences — Berber, Arab, Jewish, French, Spanish — Morocco faces the challenge of absorbing one more: information technology. Countries like India, China, Brazil and Nigeria have seen the astonishing impact that simple PCs can have on an economy - but the key to unlocking the potential of an information-driven workforce is always the same — education. Morocco wants to create its own Silicon Valley. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett visited the country to reaffirm the company’s commitment to helping Morocco shorten its road to literacy. PodTech’s Jason Lopez filed this podcast

Broadband, connectivity, Wi-Fi, accessibility and education efforts are all priorities for the ongoing efforts in developing nations and regions around the globe. Intel, along with the United Nations and International Telecommunication Union (ITU), among others, is participating this month in the Connect Africa Summit, which aims to bring together human, technical and financial resources to speed development and improvement of Africa’s Information and Communication Technology, or ICT infrastructure. Expanding broadband, wireless and mobile access technologies is the current push, after indications that Africa’s general ICT development is lagging behind its unprecedented adoption of mobile phone technology (400 percent in just a few years - well ahead of projections).

Dr. Hamadoun Touré is secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union. His call for what he refers to as a “Marshall Plan for ICT infrastructure development in Africa,” has been heard by the United Nations, and particularly by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett who, leading the UN’s Global Alliance for ICT and Development, or UN GAID, is working to bring the leading ICT companies in Silicon Valley and around the world to the challenges in Africa.

The United Nations’s Millennium Development Goals are driving innovation around the world, as the challenge of reducing global poverty by half by 2015 looms. The Connect Africa effort brings together private enterprise and non-governmental organizations for a two-day summit in Kigali, Rwanda, beginning on October 29, hosted by Rwanda President Paul Kagame and John Kufour, president of Ghana and chairman of the African Union.

Intel’s World Ahead Program, established in May 2006, has already seen the chip maker pledge more than $1 billion over five years to bridge the digital divide and bring full access to technology to the developing world.

Silicon Valley is not known for paying much attention to its own history but things are changing. The Computer History Museum’s 2007 Fellow Awards was sold out as much of Silicon Valley’s aristocracy turned out for a $250 fund raising dinner that paid tribute to four top technologists: Morris Chang, John Hennessy, David A. Patterson and Charles Thacker.

Morris Chang helped create the fabless chip industry. And in doing so, he created a massive innovation platform by enabling small bands of chip designers to buy production time as they needed it. Chip companies no longer needed to own and maintain hugely expensive chip fabs.

John Hennessy helped develop the RISC microprocessor, whose features are found in all modern microprocessors. As president of Stanford University, he has made huge contributions to education, and the creation of a student body that has gone on to found many of Silicon Valley’s largest companies. And his work has helped generate huge licensing revenue for the university.

David Patterson made important contributions to microprocessor design and RAID data storage technologies. As head of Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley, he has helped educate generations of computer engineers.

Charles Thacker helped create the personal computer. His work at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center led to the Alto, the machine that inspired Apple Computer and featured a windows graphical user interface. He co-developed Ethernet and also the laser printer.

A Word of Warning: This is a graphic video. If you do not eat meat and think killing animals to do so is bad, you should not watch this video.

We live at The San Mateo Eco-Village, where we know our neighbors, garden together and learn how to live more sustainably. Part of living sustainably is eating local foods. Harvesting food from the garden and raising hens for eggs is about as local as you can get. When our neighbors Amy and Malaki arrived at the Eco-Village, they noticed a lack of eggs coming from the hens. Both have an agricultural background from years of working on a farm in Kenya. What do they do in Kenya when a bird gets too old to lay? They eat it. The whole damn thing! So we, as a community, decided to do just that. Most of us had never experienced living with chickens, let alone killing them for dinner. Growing up in the United States allows us to be vastly ignorant of where our food comes from - meat and vegetables alike. We thought this would be a good education for us city kids.

The interesting part to me was the difference in methods between Brian, co-founder of The Eco-Village and Bay Area Native, and Malaki who grew up on a farm in Kenya. Also I thought it would be way more physically dramatic - you’ve heard the saying “running around like a chicken with its head cut-off.” Well, it’s true. Even after the chicken has died, the body still moves around and spasms. I think that freaked me out the most because it seems like the chicken is suffering, but it’s long been unconscious. Though it was not the most pleasant feeling to watch an animal die at human hands, I do know that these birds had a peaceful life full of good food and loving owners. That’s saying a heck of a lot more than all the meat that is factory farmed and trucked to our grocery stores.

Teaching in kindergarten through 12th grades continues to incorporate more technology. One Utah-based company, Timpanogos Technologies, has extended the life of existing district-wide systems while providing teachers and students with software that can create personalized study for individual students. Not only does this help the student learn, but it frees up teacher time through automated grading, self-paced learning, and even providing ongoing assignments and due dates.

Keith Blake talks about the future of K-12 education and the impact of technology-based teaching and learning tools, combined with open-source content to aid in the development of lesson plans.
