Enterprise storage is often associated with companies that produce volumes of business data. But the need for mission-critical data storage is growing acutely in one area that many users take for granted: video. It’s a data hog. Now, with high definition looming and increasing demand for video on the Web, the need for storage in our home devices and in professional settings is only going to require better performing storage solutions. In this podcast interview, Joe Rorke, of Rorke Data, discusses the rise of video and the best practices for media storage.

This Podcast covers the basic requirements customers of all sizes should consider in begging to look at alternative ways to architect their desktop populations. As we like to say, the desktop is no longer a NOUN, or a singular physical asset that we provision and deploy to end users, waiting for it or its software components to break then fix. The Desktop is in fact a VERB, it is something you do, it is really a workspace where computers, applications, and users converge so they can do the jobs we assign to them. VMware Enterprise Desktop solutions, including VDI and Thinapp allow us to do just that. However, any successful deployment hinges on a successful assessment of what your users need, today, to “desktop”.

In this video podcast, Diane Bryant, Intel Corporation’s recently-named chief information officer, discusses the role of IT in the enterprise today. Bryant sees three main functions for Intel’s IT organization, beginning with the company’s strategy for driving business growth. That centers upon ultra low-power devices in support of mobile Internet devices, and ultra low-cost solutions represented by the Atom processor, which focuses on the low-cost PC market, and the rapidly scaling system represented by global, emerging markets and the next billion users. For Bryant one big question is, “How are IT solutions going to enable Intel’s business growth?” Intel IT also serves as an in-house end user, and a valuable resource in the product development process as Intel works to stay in touch with enterprise IT management and drive down the cost of doing business. Finally, by working closely with CIOs and other enterprise IT managers, Intel IT is able to help set the rapid pace of IT innovation.

In this podcast, enterprise architecture expert Steven Kahn discusses some of the findings that went into the recently published, An Implementor’s Guide to Service Oriented Architecture - Getting it Right, produced by BearingPoint, Composite Software and other contributors. The bottom line: successful implementation of an SOA system is about more than technology. As Kahn explains, challenges in understanding the technology, to developing an IT funding model that will enable it to serve across the enterprise are all critical to success. There are many common implementation pitfalls, but Kahn explains how the process can be made simpler, and hopes to encourage more people to deploy their own SOA.

Steven Kahn is a senior manager in BearingPoint’s commercial services business systems integration practice where he works to define and deliver value-driven SOA and BPM solutions. He specializes in enterprise architectures with specific emphasis on enterprise integration and business process management.

In Part II of this podcast series on the Verizon Business 2008 Data Breach Investigations Report, Bryan Sartin, director of investigative response for Verizon Business Security Solutions, summarizes key report findings and discusses actions enterprises can take to help prevent data breaches. Based on an analysis of hundreds of corporate data breaches, including three of the five largest ever reported, Verizon Business found that nine in 10 corporate data breaches could have been prevented had reasonable security measures been in place. The report also notes that 73 percent of breaches resulted from external sources versus 18 percent from insider threats. Sartin describes several basic actions including planning, implementation and monitoring that can reap big benefits when performed with continual diligence.

Check out the Verizon Business Security Blog for more on the report.

For IT professionals responsible for introducing applications into an enterprise, compatibility testing can often be a daunting exercise. You must not only test every known OS version against the application, but you also need to understand what other applications may conflict with this new application. Application compatibility challenges account for a large percentage of end-user downtime in companies today, as many of us have experienced the unexpected “blue screen” or “frozen computer” when we launch a new application. VMware, the global leader in virtualization solutions, has now added application virtualization to its desktop product suite. Through the acquisition of Thinstall, VMware is integrating a proven and mature application virtualization offering as part of the desktop virtualization solution. VMware virtualization helps you take back control of the desktop.

In this VMware podcast, Henrik Rosendahl and Ed Albanese of VMware’s application virtualization product team explain why application virtualization matters, including the real-world benefits and the best way to try it out.

Enterprise computing has come a long way from the days of centralized mainframes in the 1970’s to the fully distributed desktops and laptops we see today. With the workplace becoming more technologically diverse and increasingly mobile, desktop IT workload grows exponentially with each new user and configuration. Is there a solution that can give IT centralized control while still providing end users with a familiar interface? Yes there is - VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure allows you to centrally deliver virtual desktops from your secure datacenter to your end users. Virtual desktops look and behave like traditional PCs. Therefore, users can still customize their desktops, download additional applications without adding to the IT support queue. VMware virtualization helps you take back control of the desktop.

This podcast features VMware Desktop Specialist Todd Dayton in an interview that dives into the architecture behind VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, applicable use cases and tips on how to get started.

The Server Virtualization Blog has a great and concise explanation of the VM value proposition in a recent post by Bridget Botelho, including links to case studies.
